Dead Witch Walking

Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison is 99c! This is book one in The Hollows series, which is urban fantasy with a fierce heroine and a lot of opportunities for asskicking. It has a 4+-star average on GoodReads, and is frequently mentioned when readers talk about which urban fantasy series to try next. However, if memory serves me right, I couldn’t get into it myself.
All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party . . . and to feed.
Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining—and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.
A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead . . . or undead.

Exploited by A. Meredith Walters is 99c! This is a contemporary romance with a hacker heroine. Readers say they really loved the concept, though the execution could have been a bit better. This is also the first in a series, but in Goodreads reviews, I saw mentions of a cliffhanger. Have you read this one?
In this pulse-pounding novel from the bestselling author of Butterfly Dreams, a vigilante hacker plays a seductive game with the agent who’s chasing her online—and sharing her bed in real life.
At first glance, I’m nothing out of the ordinary. I am a daughter. A sister. A friend. When you look at me you won’t see anything that warrants suspicion. I don’t look like a criminal.
My name is Hannah Whalen, but most people know me as freed0mov3rdr1v3, or “Freedom Overdrive”—one of the world’s most prolific and notorious hacktivists. My goal—my purpose—is to shed light on the evil that lurks behind the corporate and government lies we have been force-fed for too long.
My story begins with the best possible intention. Devoting my life to exposing the corrupt. The dishonest. The unethical. For that, they label me a cyber-terrorist. Wanted by the FBI, I’ve always been one step ahead.
Until I fell in love.
Because I’m sleeping with the man who’s hunting me. And he has no idea that I am his prey. Now I have to decide what’s more important: my freedom or my heart.

What a Gentleman Desires by Kasey Michaels is $2.99! This is the third book in The Redgraves series and features a hero out for revenge. Readers enjoyed the intrigue and secrecy elements, but other readers felt the main characters lacked any chemistry. This book can be read as a standalone. Have any of you picked it up?
Wicked intrigue unfolds in USA TODAY bestselling author Kasey Michaels’s series about the Redgraves—four siblings celebrated for their legacy of scandal and seduction…
Plagued by the scandal that once destroyed his father and now threatens his family, Valentine Redgrave dreams of dark justice. Brother to the Earl of Saltwood, with secret ties to the Crown, he won’t rest until he infiltrates and annihilates England’s most notorious hellfire club. To cross its elite members is to court destruction, yet he’s never craved a challenge more. Until he encounters enigmatic governess Daisy Marchant, who behind a plain-Jane guise harbors a private agenda and appeals to his every weakness…and desire.
Valentine’s hunt for revenge is Daisy’s key to finding her sister, who may be lost in the clutches of a deadly Society. But his seductive charm unlocks passion that can undo them both. Now, the only way to escape death and rescue their families is to trust each other in love and loyalty…even as they tread deeper into danger.

Witch Interrupted by Jody Wallace is 99c! This is the second book in the Pack and Coven series, though I believe it can be read as a standalone. Readers enjoyed the world building and sexy times, but some felt all the plot elements didn’t come together.
Two decades ago, assassin Katherine Zhang faked her death to escape the Keepers, a secret council of witches who use magic to kill those who pose a threat to their kind. Once a powerful Keeper, she lives a solitary—but peaceful—life as a tattoo artist. Until a strange, handsome lone wolf named Marcus Delgado walks into her shop.
Marcus has his own reasons to hate the Keepers. A scientist who sacrificed himself to test the fragile boundaries between witch and wolf, he believes there’s a way to harness the combustible power between the two species. If he succeeds, he’ll be protected from the Keepers, but he needs a willing partner—and the delicious Katie just might be the perfect test subject.
Katie knows working with a wolf, an adversary she’s undeniably attracted to, is a dangerous proposition…no matter how tempting she finds Marcus’s proposal. But when a common enemy from their past threatens them both, working together might be the only option.

I LOVE the Kim Harrison series! So much fun.
Amanda, I am with you on The Hollows series. I love Urban Fantasy and I didn’t like it much, but 99cents is a pretty cheap way to try it.
Some old Harlequins are on sale, including IMMINENT THUNDER by Rachel Lee, a creepy classic from the Silhouette Shadows line. (Normally $4.99; marked down to $1.99)

The secluded old house on the edge of town, shrouded by ancient oaks and Spanish moss, seemed like the perfect place for Honor Nightingale to make a fresh start, to find the peace she had never known. But then the voices came, voices from somewhere beyond the edge of reason, whispering of unspeakable horrors.
One man, and one man alone, believed her nightmare was real—her enigmatic neighbor, Ian McLaren. Strange and compelling, he had clearly seen far too much of the dark side, and it had marked him forever. And yet she found herself hungering for him, even as the voices—and her fragile heart—whispered to her to flee his touch….
I had mixed feelings about the Harrison series when I read it. I mostly liked it, but some books were definitely better than others (and some were clunkers). I recently listened to the whole series on audio and it didn’t hold up particularly well for me. Part of the reason, I think, was because I listened mostly one after the other and all of Harrison’s writing tics, repetitiveness, and rambling really stood out. Her books really needed the strong hand of a good editor. I also think that, while the series was somewhat fresh and different at the time, there have been so many other better series/writers in the genre since then. I still have mostly good memories, but won’t ever revisit the series again.
Seared by Suleikha Snyder is .99 and The Gabriel Hounds by Mary Stewart is 1.99 at Amazon (haven’t checked the other sites).
