Hi, everyone! As some of you may know, most of the SBTB team will be at the RT Booklovers Convention in Reno, myself included. I take my job as your discounted smut peddler very seriously and I’ve scheduled some Books on Sale posts ahead of time while we’re away. Unfortunately, some of these deals may have expired by the time the posts are published and I certainly apologize for getting anyone’s hopes up about a particular sale.
Additionally, if you see any books on sale that you want to recommend, we’d love for you to let us know in the comments. I’m including our affiliate-linked retailers below. If you’d like to shop through them, it helps out the site and we thank you so much. If not, no worries at all!
Thank you for reading SBTB and if you’re in Reno, we hope you’re able to say hello!
The City of Brass

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty is $1.99! This is a fantasy novel that we’ve mentioned on Hide Your Wallet, a recent podcast episode, and in my local book group. It’s also recommended for fans of The Golem and the Jinni, which is a huge favorite here. Have you read it?
Step into The City of Brass, the spellbinding debut from S. A. Chakraborty—an imaginative alchemy of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and One Thousand and One Nights, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom rests in the hands of a clever and defiant young con artist with miraculous healing gifts
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.
But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass?a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.
In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.
After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for . . .

RECOMMENDED: The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is $1.99! This fantasy novel has elements of Russian mythology and I made a soothing cocktail for it. The book is whimsical and perfect for the winter, though it can drag at times.
A magical debut novel for readers of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, and Neil Gaiman’s myth-rich fantasies, The Bear and the Nightingale spins an irresistible spell as it announces the arrival of a singular talent with a gorgeous voice.
At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.
After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.
And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.
As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

The Mech Who Loved Me by Bec McMaster is $2.99 at Amazon and Kobo. This is the second book in McMaster’s spinoff series – The Blue Blood Conspiracy. Do let me know if this serves as a standalone book, because I’m terrible and McMaster is one of those authors I should read but I just never get around to it.
Ava McLaren is tired of being both a virgin, and a mere laboratory assistant for the Company of Rogues. When a baffling mystery rears its head, it presents her with the opportunity to work a real case… and perhaps get a taste of the passion that eludes her.
Blue bloods are dying from a mysterious disease, which should be impossible. Ava suspects there’s more to the case than meets the eye and wants a chance to prove herself. There’s just one catch—she’s ordered to partner with the sexy mech, Kincaid, who’s a constant thorn in her side. Kincaid thinks the only good blue blood is a dead one. He’s also the very last man she would ever give her heart to… which makes him the perfect candidate for an affair.
The only rule? It ends when the case does.
But when an attempt on her life proves that Ava might be onto something, the only one who can protect her is Kincaid. Suddenly the greatest risk is not to their hearts, but whether they can survive a diabolical plot that threatens to destroy every blue blood in London—including Ava.

Beauty and the Clockwork Beast by Nancy Campbell Allen is 99c! This is the first book in the Steampunk Proper Romance series and, as the name suggests, it has Beauty and the Beast vibes. Some readers felt there were 10 pounds of extra stuff shoved into a 5 pound book. However, there’s one review on Goodreads where the reader admits sitting in her car in a parking lot just so she can finish the book.
When Lucy Pickett arrives at Blackwell Manor to tend to her ailing cousin, Kate, she finds more than she bargained for. A restless ghost roams the hallways, werewolves have been reported in the area, and vampires lurk across the Scottish border.
Lord Miles himself is clearly hiding a secret. He is brash and inhospitable and does not take kindly to visitors—even one as smart and attractive as Miss Pickett. He is unsettled by the mysterious deaths of his new wife, Clara, and his sister, Marie. Could Miles himself be to blame for the deaths?
Working together, Miles and Lucy attempt to restore peace to Blackwell Manor. But can Lucy solve the mystery of Miles? Can she love the man—beast and all?

Thank you, Amanda, for giving us books on sale even during this busy week! 🙂 I am a Reno local and so excited for the Bitchery to be in my hometown. Hopefully it charms you with its mix of wild west beauty and trashiness (I say this with love). And a word of advice to East Coasters: the “va” in Nevada is the same “a” as in “had,” not the “ah” as in “avocado.” And, yes, everyone will remind you of that almost constantly if you say it wrong. (Transplant from the east here, trying to spare you!) Hope to meet you at RT!
AR DeClerck has a couple of exceptional Steampunk Romances, The Alchemist’s Kiss and The Enchanter’s Embrace. These are two of my favorites in this genre, these books also take a trip through the magical realm as well. Very well done. I highly recommend.
Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen is still free.
The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan is $2.99
I just read Beauty and the Clockwork Beast last week! I went in with no expectations and found it very enjoyable, though it definitely does just throw a few things at the wall and see what sticks. But I would recommend it if you like Beauty and the Beast retellings, a dash of steampunk (not a whole lot) and some good old Gothic mystery.
The City of Brass is apparently Book 1 in a planned trilogy. Does it end in a cliffhanger or does it actually end? I don’t mind starting Book 1 of a series, but I want it to actually have some kind of resolution! Would appreciate hearing from someone who’s read this…..Thank you!
The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren is $1.99 at Amazon at least. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this one.
@CelineB: I highly recommend The Ones Who Got Away and reviewed it here, if anyone needs an extra push.
I love steampunk romance, though I think Meljean Brook has ruined me for other authors. BUT I might try these, the price is right!
The Bear And The Nightingale is so good, as is the next book in the series. Katherine Arden is such a talented author!
Playing With Fire by RJ BLain is 99 cents this week. Part of the Magical Romantic Comedy with a Bodycount series. The plot is full to bursting in this one. After reading it I am always left wondering about a few loose plot threads, but during the reading it is an amazingly funny story with an awesome cast of characters. The author has teased a revisit to these characters coming in 2020 or so.

Bear and the Nightingale was so good, and the sequel Girl in the Tower is even better. DYING for book three.
@peggy h, it’s been a while since I read it but I recall there being some pretty significant untied plot threads at the end of City of Brass. I’d say wait if that sort of thing bugs you.
Thank you, Erica!!
