  • Kushiel’s Dart

    Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey

READER RECOMMENDED: Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey is $2.99! This is a highly recommended fantasy novel and we have a great guest squee from a reader named Betty:

This book was the first of a trilogy and there is a damn good reason the series is listed among the best of its genre. It is like Lord of the Ringswith anal sex. It is like The Wheel of Time with BDSM. It is like The Wizard of Earthsea with un-emphasized and natural bisexuality. It was Game of Thrones with less incest and more consensual sex.

    Seriously, I loved Kushiel’s Dart.

The land of Terre d’Ange is a place of unsurpassing beauty and grace. It is said that angels found the land and saw it was good… and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.

Phèdre nó Delaunay is a young woman who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, her bond is purchased by Anafiel Delaunay, a nobleman with very a special mission… and the first one to recognize who and what she is: one pricked by Kushiel’s Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one.

Phèdre is trained equally in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber, but, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Almost as talented a spy as she is courtesan, Phèdre stumbles upon a plot that threatens the very foundations of her homeland. Treachery sets her on her path; love and honor goad her further. And in the doing, it will take her to the edge of despair… and beyond. Hateful friend, loving enemy, beloved assassin; they can all wear the same glittering mask in this world, and Phèdre will get but one chance to save all that she holds dear.

Set in a world of cunning poets, deadly courtiers, heroic traitors, and a truly Machiavellian villainess, this is a novel of grandeur, luxuriance, sacrifice, betrayal, and deeply laid conspiracies. Not since Dune has there been an epic on the scale of Kushiel’s Dart-a massive tale about the violent death of an old age, and the birth of a new.

  • A History of Glitter and Blood

A History of Glitter and Blood by Hannah Moskowitz

RECOMMENDED: A History of Glitter and Blood by Hannah Moskowitz is $1.99! Real talk, this book is weird and though it’s YA, it can get pretty dark in terms of what happens in this fantasy fictional world. It has a bit of a speculative fiction vibe, but it’s definitely a book that will stick with you, even though I know it’s not for everyone. I will also warn that it takes a while to get going.

Sixteen-year-old Beckan and her friends are the only fairies brave enough to stay in Ferrum when war breaks out. Now there is tension between the immortal fairies, the subterranean gnomes, and the mysterious tightropers who arrived to liberate the fairies.

But when Beckan’s clan is forced to venture into the gnome underworld to survive, they find themselves tentatively forming unlikely friendships and making sacrifices they couldn’t have imagined. As danger mounts, Beckan finds herself caught between her loyalty to her friends, her desire for peace, and a love she never expected.

This stunning, lyrical fantasy is a powerful exploration of what makes a family, what justifies a war, and what it means to truly love.

  • Intercepting the Chef

Intercepting the Chef by Rachel Goodman

Intercepting the Chef by Rachel Goodman is $1.99! I was excited about this book in a previous Hide Your Wallet post because it blends two of my catnips: an athlete and a foodie character. Readers thought this was a great start to a new series, but found that the heroine was difficult to like at times.

“Smart, sexy, and funny” (Publishers Weekly) contemporary romance writer Rachel Goodman is back with a brand new series about a quarterback trying to score in the most important game of his life—the game of love.

Gwen Lalonde is a rising star in the eyes of the elite restaurateurs of the world. But when her celebrity chef boss and now ex-boyfriend fires her, she finds herself playing a different game. Forced to flee San Francisco and return home to Denver, Gwen lands a spot as the executive chef at Stonestreet’s, a new restaurant owned by NFL golden boy and Colorado Blizzards quarterback Logan Stonestreet. When Logan starts pursuing Gwen romantically, she pulls a classic duck and weave and avoids any advances by throwing herself into reestablishing her reputation in Denver.

But Logan Stonestreet is persistent—he didn’t become one of the best football players in the league by throwing in the towel at the first rejection. Something about Logan’s unwavering determination—and amazing body—keeps Gwen around, and soon there’s more that’s sizzling than just the steak on the grill. Things are getting more serious than either side cares to admit, and when Logan suffers a severe injury in the playoffs, they’re both forced to make game-time decisions. The perfect romance for football fans and foodies alike, Intercepting the Chef is a delicious read that’ll have you hooked until the very last play.

  • It Started with a Kiss

It Started with a Kiss by Marina Adair

It Started with a Kiss by Marina Adair is $1.99 at Amazon! This contemporary romance with small town elements and is the first book in the Sequoia Lake series. Readers loved the outdoorsy heroine, though some felt they were bored with the romance. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads. Have you read this?

With a kidney transplant behind her, Avery Adams is determined to channel her inner adventurer and explore everything life has to offer. Only problem is, the closest she’s ever come to a real-life adventure was sixth-grade science camp. So to seize the summer in her rustic Sierra Nevada town, she takes a job as a guide at the local adventure lodge. But Avery doesn’t realize her biggest challenge will register at six-plus feet of rugged good looks and alpha-male charm.

As a member of the Sequoia Elite Mountain Rescue team, Tyson Donovan has made a life out of cheating death and rescuing weekend warriors from the treacherous terrain. “The world is my home” is more than just a motto; it’s what scares off women who would otherwise try to tie him down. When his dad’s health lands the family’s adventure lodge in serious danger of going up in flames, he moves home—and quickly remembers why he left. Until he meets Avery, the irresistible new guide who makes him want to stay.

Tyson gives the inexperienced Avery a lesson in romance that her books could never teach her. And with her undeniable spirit for life, Avery shows Tyson the healing power of love. But with one misstep, everything comes crashing down, and they’ll both have to take the biggest leap of all—into the kind of adventure that lasts a lifetime.

As a point of interest I just uploaded a cross stitch pattern of Phedre’s Marque in my Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/597203300/phedres-marque?ref=shop_home_active_1 A wedding sampler version is coming soon.

  2. Lostshadows says:

I’d definitely recommend getting Kushiel’s Dart in digital if you’re interested in it. It’s about 800 pages.

Also don’t read descriptions on the back of the later books if you want to avoid spoilers.

  3. Anonymous says:

As much as I love Kushiel’s Dart (and believe me, I love it a lot), I’m not really sure I could honestly describe it as “good.” There are certainly a lot of good things about it, but the world-building in particular really falls apart completely if you stop to think about it. It goes on my list of “Favourite Fantasy” but not my list of “Best Fantasy,” if that makes sense?

  4. JTReader says:

Most Eligible Bastard by Annika Martin and Hostage by Skye Warren and Annika Martin are now 99 cents on Amazon.

  5. Hera says:

I’d definitely call Kushiel’s Dart and the whole series good. Are there elements that work less well than others and/or reflect common tropes of the time? Yes. I’d still put it on par with most fantasy epics.

  6. Moriah says:

Mary Balogh’s newest Someone to Care (just released on 5/1) is only $1.99 on Amazon. Not sure if pricing error or what, but you rarely see a new release from her for that low.

  7. Varian says:

I’m just re-reading Kushiel’s Dart now, and enjoying it a lot. It’s heavy on intrigue and politics, but *spoilers* the romance between Phedre and Josceline is a wonderful slow burn.

  8. Lola Jane says:

My Kushiel’s Dart testimonial- I read it more than 10 years ago and I still think about it often. Seriously, Melisande pops into my head at least once a month.

  9. Stefka says:

Thanks to recommendations on this site I recently started reading Lindsay McKenna’s western series featuring H and/or h veterans in Wyoming. I just picked up Wind River Cowboy on sale for $1.99 on iBooks.

(As someone who is outdoorsy and has lived in Montana, I have high standards for westerns, and usually avoid the genre in romance due to “believability” issues. I’ve enjoyed McKenna’s Wind River series so far!)

  10. Diana says:

What about the next trilogy in the universe? (I think her son is the protagonist) Never dared to read it, so that it doesn’t affect the good memories of the previous books

  11. Diana says:

Sorry, to clarify I meant the trilogy that starts with “Kushiel’s Scion” (Imriel’s Trilogy, #1)

  12. MirandaB says:

@Diana. I didn’t find Imriel as much fun as Phedre and the books could drag, but I enjoyed the trilogy overall.

There’s a 3rd trilogy set several generations in the future with a lead who’s half-D’Angeline.
