  • A Curious Beginning

A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

RECOMMENDEDA Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn is $2.99! This is a historical mystery and Sarah really enjoyed it. She also immediately read the second one (which is also on sale!) after finishing the first. Here’s what she said:

I read A Curious Beginning with an I-cannot-put-this-down enthusiasm and devoured it very quickly. I relished both the characters and the mystery. The Veronica Speedwell series is excellent and intelligent fun, and while the second isn’t quite as satisfying as the first, I heartily recommend them both.

In her thrilling new series, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries, returns once more to Victorian England…and introduces intrepid adventuress Veronica Speedwell.

London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.

But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

  • I Spy a Duke

I Spy a Duke by Erica Monroe

I Spy a Duke by Erica Monroe is 99c! This is the first book in the Covert Heiresses series and features spies and a marriage of convenience. Some readers mentioned there’s a hint of insta-lust, while others loved the spy trope in this book. Have you read it?

In the first in an adventurous new series, USA Today Bestselling Author Erica Monroe introduces the Covert Heiresses: four women who by day are the talk of the ton, and by night England’s top spies.

    She wants revenge…
When bluestocking Vivienne Loren becomes governess for the wealthy Spencer family, she’s hunting for clues about the murder of her brother, not romance. But Vivienne didn’t count on one thing: James Spencer, the autocratic and infuriatingly handsome Duke of Abermont.

    He needs a wife…
As head of Britain’s elite intelligence agency, James has no time to woo a wife. After discovering Vivienne’s thirst for revenge has made her a pawn in the treacherous plot of one of Napoleon’s most deadly spies, James realizes they can help each other. She’ll become his duchess, and he’ll keep her safe.

What begins as a marriage of convenience quickly becomes anything but as secrets surface. Love may be the most dangerous mission of all.

  • Sweet Tea and Sympathy

Sweet Tea and Sympathy by Molly Harper

Sweet Tea and Sympathy by Molly Harper is $1.99! Sarah and I both read this one as a fun palate cleanser sort of book. It’s very cute, but we’ll warn that for a quaint Southern town, it’s very white.

Beloved author Molly Harper launches a brand new contemporary romance series, Southern Eclectic, with this story of a big-city party planner who finds true love in a small Georgia town.

Nestled on the shore of Lake Sackett, Georgia is the McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop. (What, you have a problem with one-stop shopping?) Two McCready brothers started two separate businesses in the same building back in 1928, and now it’s become one big family affair. And true to form in small Southern towns, family business becomes everybody’s business.

Margot Cary has spent her life immersed in everything Lake Sackett is not. As an elite event planner, Margot’s rubbed elbows with the cream of Chicago society, and made elegance and glamour her business. She’s riding high until one event goes tragically, spectacularly wrong. Now she’s blackballed by the gala set and in dire need of a fresh start—and apparently the McCreadys are in need of an event planner with a tarnished reputation.

As Margot finds her footing in a town where everybody knows not only your name, but what you had for dinner last Saturday night and what you’ll wear to church on Sunday morning, she grudgingly has to admit that there are some things Lake Sackett does better than Chicago—including the dating prospects. Elementary school principal Kyle Archer is a fellow fish-out-of-water who volunteers to show Margot the picture-postcard side of Southern living. The two of them hit it off, but not everybody is happy to see an outsider snapping up one of the town’s most eligible gentleman. Will Margot reel in her handsome fish, or will she have to release her latest catch?

  • Born of Shadows

Born of Shadows by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born of Shadows by Sherrilyn Kenyon is $1.99! This is book four in her The League scifi romance series and I’m sure if the series needs to be read in order. I’ve read the first two and I think they could manage as standalones. If you want more scifi romances, give this series a try. But I warn you that you have to commit to the bonkers adventures of space assassins.

In a world where the League and its assassins rule, where betrayal and treachery are everywhere…the only survivors are those ones who are…

    BORN OF SHADOWS

For Caillen Dagan, a defiant soldier of fortune, survival isn’t a right, it’s a brutal daily battle. Moving through the Ichidaian universe like a wraith, his brushes with the law and death are legendary. But when an act of rare heroism reveals his hidden birthright, he’s forced into a world much more dangerous and cold-hearted than the bloody streets where he was raised – one of obscene wealth and lethal politics.

Ferocious and determined, Desideria serves as an official bodyguard for her queen. Born of questionable genetics, she will do anything to prove herself worthy of the weapons she carries and the position she’s won by combat. But when she uncovers a ruthless plot to assassinate the queen and overthrow her country’s government, Desideria is caught in the crosshairs.

With assassination contracts out on both of them, Caillen and Desideria must learn to fight together or die alone. And if they fail, their governments will fall into the hands of an unimaginable evil.

Sweet Tea and Sympathy is a fun read, but I live in an area where the attic over the general store/feed store is often used as a night club and tax services are offered at the gas station/bait shop.

The opening scene of SWEET TEA AND SYMPATHY is one of the funniest things I have ever read (“No can haz shrimp!”)

Dating-ish by Penny Reid is $1.99 today. It’s part of the knitting in the city contemporary series but reads okay as a stand-alone.
