The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is $2.99! This scifi novel has been recommended and loved by many of my friends, and talked about highly in my book group. The book has some great queer representation, though readers remarked it’s more character driven than plot driven.
A rollicking space adventure with a lot of heart
When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn’t expecting much. The patched-up ship has seen better days, but it offers her everything she could possibly want: a spot to call home, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and some distance from her past.
And nothing could be further from what she’s known than the crew of the Wayfarer.
From Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the chatty engineers who keep the ship running, to the noble captain Ashby, life aboard is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. That is until the crew is offered the job of a lifetime tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. Sure, they’ll earn enough money to live comfortably for years, but risking her life wasn’t part of the job description.
The journey through the galaxy is full of excitement, adventure, and mishaps for the Wayfarer team. And along the way, Rosemary comes to realize that a crew is a family, and that family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe… as long as you actually like them.

Dirty Games by HelenKay Dimon is $1.99! This is a gay contemporary romance with some elements of suspense. It’s also the second book in The Dirty series, but can be read as a standalone. Some felt that if you read the first book, the hero Finn, didn’t translate well into his own romance. However, others said Dimon did a great job with pacing, blending action and romance.
Sometimes, to get what you want in business or in love, you have to get your hands dirty. Luckily for Finn and Justin, dirty comes naturally.
Finn Drummond is the baby in a family of sharks—which means he’s worked twice as hard to make a name for himself. After learning the tricks of the trade from his brothers, Finn’s just as ruthless and dominant. Out in the field, his appetites are legendary: for success, for money, for women and men. But when supplies from Drummond Charities go missing, Finn has to partner up with the smoldering ex–Army grunt who’s always challenging his authority—or giving him mixed signals.
Justin Miller wanted his attraction to Finn to be mutual, but the cocky brat always had a girlfriend. Who could blame Justin for trying to move on? Despite their history, they’ve got to work together to figure out who’s been derailing their humanitarian work. But after Justin and Finn are thrown together against gunrunners and kidnappers, their simmering chemistry turns explosive. Turns out, Finn knows how to handle himself in a crisis—and in the sack. Justin only hopes that hot sex is enough to persuade this spoiled pretty boy to do the right thing.

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis is $1.99! This has been on my TBR pile for awhile after I fell in love with McGinnis’ writing in The Female of the Species. This is a YA historical mystery and does deal with difficult themes, so content warning. Have you read it?
Grace Mae knows madness.
She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.
When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.
In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.

The Reunion by Sara Portman is $2.99! This is the first book in the Brides of Beadwell series and features a heroine who thought her fiancé died in battle. Readers say the setting is well-captured and historically accurate. However, others felt some of the characterization could have used more depth.
An inconvenient engagement turns a marriage of convenience into so much more in this sparkling new series from award-winning author Sara Portman . . .
Lady Emmaline Shaw’s reputation was irreparably damaged when her fiancé, John Brantwood, disappeared immediately after their engagement four years ago. Since then, she’s grown from a shy, uncertain girl to a woman who knows her own mind. And what she knows is that London society holds nothing for her.
Rumor has it that John ran off to war and died in battle. Now, as the new Duke of Worley, his shocking resurrection throws the ton into a tizzy and makes him one of England’s most sought after bachelors—except that he’s already engaged.
John needs a wife capable of smoothing his beloved sister’s introduction into society. But though Emma happily grants him his freedom, her fiery beauty and resilient spirit hold him captive. In fact, John has no intention of letting her go. Her fate is now in his hands, but will her heart be safe there as well?

YMMV, but A Madness So Discrete is dark but very, very good. I personally really liked it but it’s the kind of darkness that requires trigger warnings. The only book I had in my mental library to compare it to to- Robin Mckinley’s Deerskin. Which I find to be a disturbing book.
I’m listening to the audio book of “Long Way etc.”right this minute and enjoying it in a campy fun space opera way.
“more character driven than plot driven” – that’s one of the reasons I liked Angry Planet. 🙂
I enjoyed The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. I liked the follow on book, A Closed and Common Orbit, even more; it was quite different in style. It too is on sale for $2.99.
Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen is currently free. It’s not my favorite book by Bowen, as I find the heroine kind of annoying, but it’s still good.
That Madness cover is beautiful and terrifying.
I personally stayed away from A Madness So Discreet because of The Book Smugglers’ review (here), but it sounds like others have enjoyed it.
“Long Way” was an interesting read for me as I found I liked all the supporting cast more than Rosemary. Luckily, they got lots of time. I also agree with Kareni that the second book was more compelling – would recommend!
Another Becky Chambers fan here. I loved both Long Way … and A Close and Common Orbit. Looking forward to more from her.
Gathered Up by Annabeth Albert is .99. It’s a box set of 3 novellas (#4-6 in Portland Heat).
It includes Knit Tight, which got a good review here and that I think is the best of the 3. Annabeth Albert writes very tropey mm contemporaries.
