Jill Shalvis, a Thriller, & More

  • The Widow

    The Widow by Fiona Barton

The Widow by Fiona Barton is $1.99! This is a thriller that Elyse really enjoyed! It earned an A grade asa Lightning Review:

I don’t want to say much more about this book because it will ruin it–that’s why I opted for a lightning review even though I could talk about the The Widow for hours. I want every reader to experience the delicious twists and turns this thriller offers.

For fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, an electrifying thriller that will take you into the dark spaces that exist between a husband and a wife.

When the police started asking questions, Jean Taylor turned into a different woman. One who enabled her and her husband to carry on, when more bad things began to happen…

But that woman’s husband died last week. And Jean doesn’t have to be her anymore.

There’s a lot Jean hasn’t said over the years about the crime her husband was suspected of committing. She was too busy being the perfect wife, standing by her man while living with the accusing glares and the anonymous harassment.

Now there’s no reason to stay quiet. There are people who want to hear her story. They want to know what it was like living with that man. She can tell them that there were secrets. There always are in a marriage.

The truth—that’s all anyone wants. But the one lesson Jean has learned in the last few years is that she can make people believe anything…

  • Man Candy

    Man Candy by Jessica Lemmon

Man Candy by Jessica Lemmon is $1.99! This is the third book in the Real Love series, but it can be read as a standalone. There is a forced proximity element, which gives me some major catnip vibes. Also, it has a grumpy hero. However, some readers seem divided on the heroine.

Is there room for two in that sleeping bag? When it comes to love, a chiseled loner takes the scenic route in this irresistible standalone from the author of Eye Candy (“Truly the perfect romantic comedy.”—Lauren Layne).

Dax: After spending the summer buried up to my eyeballs in my family’s affairs, I’m ready for a break. The kind of break where I can spend two solid weeks camping and fishing in the company of absolutely no one. Then I find myself directly in the path of a drop-dead gorgeous tornado by the name of Becca Stone. Who can resist a night with a damsel in distress? Especially when she happens to be a leggy blonde? The last thing I expect is for Becca to show up on my cabin doorstep the next night, shivering in the rain and ready for seconds.

Becca: One minute I’m admiring the rock-hard jaw of the Magic Mike lookalike who walks into my bar, and the next I’m getting fired by my own brother. Loudly. In front of everyone. Luckily Dax Vaughn is a gentleman who aims his white-hot smile at me. Oh, it’s on. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. Then a torrential storm washes out the main road and causes a massive power outage, giving us two whole weeks to enjoy each other’s company. At which point Dax will go back home, leaving “us” in the rearview mirror. That’s the plan. Or it was . . . until I started falling for him.

  • The Shadow Land

The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova

The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova is $1.99! This is a mix between historical fiction and literary fiction. I also mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet. Readers definitely say the book is slow going at first. However, others talk highly of the writing and character depth.

From the #1 bestselling author of The Historian comes an engrossing novel that spans the past and the present—and unearths the dark secrets of Bulgaria, a beautiful and haunted country.

A young American woman, Alexandra Boyd, has traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, hoping that life abroad will salve the wounds left by the loss of her beloved brother. Soon after arriving in this elegant East European city, however, she helps an elderly couple into a taxi—and realizes too late that she has accidentally kept one of their bags. Inside she finds an ornately carved wooden box engraved with a name: Stoyan Lazarov. Raising the hinged lid, she discovers that she is holding an urn filled with human ashes.

As Alexandra sets out to locate the family and return this precious item, she will first have to uncover the secrets of a talented musician who was shattered by oppression—and she will find out all too quickly that this knowledge is fraught with its own danger.

Kostova’s new novel is a tale of immense scope that delves into the horrors of a century and traverses the culture and landscape of this mysterious country. Suspenseful and beautifully written, it explores the power of stories, the pull of the past, and the hope and meaning that can sometimes be found in the aftermath of loss.

  • Rescue My Heart

Rescue My Heart by Jill Shalvis

Rescue My Heart by Jill Shalvis is $1.99! This is the third book in the Animal Magnetism series and features a second chance romance. Some readers felt this one didn’t live up their enjoyment of the previous books in the series, but others loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine.

After a tragic stint in the National Guards, Adam Connelly returns to Idaho and to Belle Haven, the animal shelter he owns with his brothers. All Adam wants is to be alone. Then he opens the door to the past—the woman whose heart he once broke. Still gorgeous, still tough-as-nails, but this time, unusually vulnerable.

Holly Reid learned the hard way to never depend on a man for anything. Now, of all men, it’s the last one she wants to see, and the only one she needs. Her father has gone missing in the Bitterroot Mountains and she could use someone with tracking skills to help find him.

For Holly and Adam, each with their ghosts, a trek this desperate, this unpredictable, and this intimate, will have its share of risks—including opening their hearts one more time.

  1. Rose says:

I can’t get over how betrayed the doggo looks on the cover of Rescue My Heart. That’s the same expression my husband’s cat wears when I hug him in her presence. “What are you doing, letting this woman intrude on our perfect relationship? Am I not enough for you?! J’ACCUSE!”

  2. Lisa says:

Boy, I made fun of The Historian so hard back in the day. Dracula’s plan was to build a library, and everyone remembered what they had for dinner 20 years earlier

  3. kitkat9000 says:

I read The Historian a year after it came out and enjoyed it. Now, ask me what’s in it other than a nameless protagonist and a lot of books.

  4. GraceElizabeth says:

@Lisa I LOVED The Historian for precisely those reasons! I was quite a young Angsty Teen when it was popular so maybe that’s why? I’ve never reread it all the way through and probably never will but it holds a special place in my heart. Dracula the Academic still spooked me.

  5. Allison says:

I, too, loved The Historian, mostly because it just felt like a love letter to the study of history.

I have to admit to being baffled by the positive reviews of The Widow: without mentioning spoilers, I felt that the build-up was far better than the conclusion. I kept waiting for the conclusion to get more interesting…

  6. L. says:

So I guess I’m out here in left field all by my lonesome, thinking The Historian is a terrible, terrible book and I’m not about to give the author a second chance.

  7. E. says:

Another Historian fan here! Yeah, you’re alone in your Historian hate.

  8. Karen D says:

@Allison, I’m in agreement with you about The Widow. I found the ending underwhelming and frankly not worth the time it took to read the rest of the story.

  9. Ren Benton says:

@L.: I haven’t read the book in question, but I have that feeling (“What the hell did y’all read because here is my 600-page report about what’s wrong with this 200-page book”) at least once a day, so I feel your pain.

  10. Lisa says:

L, I’m with you. I thought it was ridiculous.

  11. Lisa says:

If for no other reason than the ultra convenient amnesia…

  12. chacha1 says:

I am LOL at the Historian hate here. I *am* a historian, and because there are few notable fiction books featuring historians I remember looking at the book when it came out, and thinking “nope.”
