Historical Romances & a True Crime Memoir

  • The Fact of a Body

The Fact of a Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich

RECOMMENDEDThe Fact of a Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and there is a ton of nonfiction on sale. This is part memoir, part true crime and it’s a really gripping book. Both Elyse and I have read it and were captivated by it. But I cannot issue enough content warnings for this book.

A young law student, an unspeakable crime, and a past that refuses to stay buried.

Before Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich begins a summer job at a law firm in Louisiana, working on the retrial defense of death-row convicted murderer and child molester Ricky Langley, she thinks her position is clear. The child of two lawyers, she is staunchly anti-death penalty. But the moment Ricky’s face flashes on the screen as she reviews old tapes, the moment she hears him speak of his crimes, she is overcome with the feeling of wanting him to die. Shocked by her reaction, she digs deeper and deeper into the case, realizing that despite their vastly different circumstances, something in his story is unsettlingly, uncannily familiar.

Crime, even the darkest and must unsayable acts, can happen to any one of us. As Alexandria pours over the facts of the murder, she finds herself thrust into the complicated narrative of Ricky’s childhood. And by examining the details of Ricky’s case, she is forced to face her own story, to unearth long-buried family secrets, to reckon with how her own past colors her view of Ricky’s crime.

But Alexandria is not alone in interpreting the crime through her own life. The judge, the jury foreman, even the victim’s mother and the defense attorney—all see what happened through their own lens of experience. The trial that took place was about Ricky’s past, but also the pasts of everyone touched by the murder. In Alexandria’s hands, THE FACT OF A BODY becomes a book not only about how the story of one crime was constructed—but about how we understand our past, the nature of forgiveness, and if a single narrative can ever really contain something as definitive as the truth.

In the thrilling tradition of IN COLD BLOOD, MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL and recent runaway phenoms MAKING A MURDERER and SERIAL, THE FACT OF A BODY is a groundbreaking, heart stopping investigation years in the making that shows how the law is comprised of individual stories and therefore more personal than we like to imagine, and serves as proof that arriving at truth is more complicated, and powerful, than we could ever imagine.

  • When a Scot Loves a Lady

When a Scot Loves a Lady by Katharine Ashe

When a Scot Loves a Lady by Katharine Ashe is $1.99! This is the first book in the Falcon Club series and. I also want to issue a catnip warning because this book has a Scot hero, forced proximity in a snowy cabin, and hints of a holiday romance. However, some readers found the written Scottish brogue to be a bit much. Have you read this one?

London gossips are asking: What use has society of an exclusive gentleman’s club if no gentlemen are ever seen to pass through its door?

After years as an agent of the secret Falcon Club, Lord Leam Blackwood knows it’s time to return home to Scotland. One temptation threatens his plans—Kitty Savege. The scandal-plagued lady warms his blood like a dram of fine whiskey. But a dangerous enemy stands in the way of desire, and to beat this foe Leam needs Kitty’s help…

Kitty never wanted to spend her holidays in a wretched country village! With snow up to the windows, escape is nowhere in sight. A roguish Scottish lord, however, is. His rough brogue sends tingles of heat from Kitty’s frigid toes to her chilled nose, but she’s confident she can withstand that. What she cannot control is the reaction of her carefully guarded heart when she discovers this beast is, in fact, no beast at all…

  • Dreaming of the Duke

Dreaming of the Duke by Eva Devon

Dreaming of the Duke by Eva Devon is 99c! This is a historical romance where the hero and heroine are already married, though I’m a big fuzzy on the details about their arranged marriage. Readers loved the heroine, but mention that if you’ve read previous Devon books, this one has nothing new. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

A duchess who desires her freedom.

Cordelia Eversleigh, Duchess of Hunt, has spent her entire life in Egypt, sifting through the sands, cavorting with the local tribes, and uncovering the tombs of glorified ancient Egyptian accountants. Now, all she wishes is to go to Paris and study the mysteries of the hieroglyph. There’s only one problem. She needs to annul her marriage to the husband she has never met. But when she comes face to face with the infamous duke, he stirs a wicked desire in her nature that shocks her to the tips of her oh so practical toes.

A duke longing to be tamed.

Born the second son, Jack Eversleigh, now the Duke of Hunt, has accepted he is going to be a terrible duke. Loving wine, women, and song, he knows there’s only one thing to do. Live up to his debauched reputation. But when a young woman tracks him down in a London pub, prim, proper, and with a tongue that would make the devil envious, he is captivated. . . Until he discovers that she is his wife.

Can these two embrace an arranged marriage á la mode or will their stubborn minds conquer their passionate hearts?

  • Bride of Falcon

Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron

Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron is $1.99! This is the second book in the A Waltz with a Rogue series. The first book is free and the others are $2.99! This romance is on the shorter side; at Amazon, it’s listed at 242 pages. However, on Goodreads, it’s even less and described as a novella. Perhaps the author added more to it later or revamped it? Anyone have an idea?

    When is love not enough?

After five Seasons, Ivonne Wimpleton has accepted she’s an haute ton undesirable. Her only suitors are men desperate to get their hands on her marriage settlement. Guarded and aloof, and always a bit ungraceful, she’s resigned herself to spinsterhood. She doesn’t mind her fate since Chancy Faulkenhurst, the man who once held her heart, left for India without an explanation.

Six years later Chance returns to England physically and emotionally scarred. His love for Ivonne remains just as strong, and when he learns she must choose one of the degenerates who’ve offered for her, he’s determined that none should have her but him. Except, not only is she infuriated he made no effort to contact her in all their years apart, in Chance’s absence, his father arranged a marriage for him and fully expects Chance to honor the agreement.

Caution: This historical Regency romance contains an intrepid, spinsterish wallflower convinced she’s unworthy of love, a wounded hero determined to persuade her otherwise, and a cunning villainess you’ll hope gets her comeuppance.

Whenever I see words like “cunning villainess” in a romance plot blurb, I immediately think “oh but I want HER story.”

Another non-fiction book that might be of interest is Code Girls. About the women during WWII who broke coded messages. I grew up with the daughter of one of these women and never knew this story. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N193KET/ref=pe_385040_118058080_TE_M1DP

The Fact of A Body was the first book I read this year, and four months later I’m still thinking about it. It’s really an incredible book. But it is HARROWING.

  7. Maite says:

Yup, “The Fact of a Body” shall never have enough Trigger Warnings.

    And @Anonymus:
I totally understand you. Here’s a couple of “cunning villainess” that have been reviewed by the bitchery:
    Lady Susan, by Jane Austen.
The inspiration, Les Liasons Dangerous. And a retelling: Unforgivable Love by Sophronia Scott

    I can’t recall any others.

  8. Tam says:

I just read my way through ‘Slouch Witch’ and hugely enjoyed it. Bit Rachel Morganish, but with a gloriously lazy and sneaky heroine.

I lived in Oxford for six years, and I can usually spot when an author’s never set foot in the place – this one seems to have managed it, though!
