  • Fortune Favors the Wicked

Fortune Favors the Wicked by Theresa Romain

RECOMMENDED: Fortune Favors the Wicked by Theresa Romain is $1.99! There’s a treasure hunt, a blind hero, and a former courtesan heroine. Talk about catnip! Redheadedgirl gave this an A grade in a Lightning Review:

What I found the most interesting about this book was how the blind hero was written. He hadn’t always been blind – he was struck by a disease while he was in the Navy – and the narrative describes with abundant detail how he moves through a world he can’t see, but he still perceives. And I really appreciated that she doesn’t magically cure him of his blindness. Love doesn’t cure all things, and this is a part of who he is now.

    INDECENTLY LUCKY

As a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Benedict Frost had the respect of every man on board—and the adoration of the women in every port. When injury ends his naval career, the silver-tongued libertine can hardly stomach the boredom. Not after everything—and everyone—he’s experienced. Good thing a new adventure has just fallen into his lap…

When courtesan Charlotte Perry learns the Royal Mint is offering a reward for finding a cache of stolen gold coins, she seizes the chance to build a new life for herself. As the treasure hunt begins, she realizes her tenacity is matched only by Benedict’s—and that sometimes adversaries can make the best allies. But when the search for treasure becomes a discovery of pleasure, they’ll be forced to decide if they can sacrifice the lives they’ve always dreamed of for a love they’ve never known…

  • The Undoing

    The Undoing by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDEDThe Undoing by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! This is the second book in the Call of Crows, which Sarah absolutely loves. She gave it an A grade, in case you’re wondering:

I read both books in a matter of days, and hid in my room to read more every day that I was at RT. I carried my Kindle with me so I could read more while I waited in line. I read more before bed, even though I should have been sleeping by then. And when I tried to explain these two books and the series to people, I managed a stammering, sentence fragment-filled stream of nonsense because there’s so much going on, and it’s all so fascinating and good. The Call of Crows series is a unique world and mythology, but it’s the characters in both The Unleashing and The Undoing that make this series terrific.

    A risk worth taking…

No one would ever accuse Jace Berisha of having an easy life—considering her husband…you know…killed her. But that was then! Now she fights for mighty Viking gods with the spectacular and vicious Crows.

But things are turning very bad, very quickly because a vengeful, ancient goddess has come into the world with just one thing on her mind—ending it. And the only way they can hope to stop her is if the Crows join forces with their one-time enemies, the Protectors. A Viking Clan created to do nothing but kill every Crow they see.

Thankfully, Protector Ski Eriksen is a peace loving kind of guy. Because the woman he is desperately trying to get close to is the beautiful and not-very-chatty Jace. Battling Nordic clans? Unkillable goddesses? Jace’s mean-spirited dog? None of these things would ever get in the way of a true Viking!

  • The Duke and the Domina

The Duke and the Domina by Jenn LeBlanc

The Duke and the Domina by Jenn LeBlanc is $2.99 at select vendors! This romance is filled with lots of catnip: time travel, a Dominatrix heroine, and a marriage of convenience. This is the third book in the Lords of Time series, and I think it can be read as a standalone, but someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

    He’s poor. She’s rich.
    He’s a sub. She’s a switch.
    It’s not love.
    It’s a marriage of Kink-venience.

Grayson Danforth, Duke of Warrick, was banished from England by his father when his propensity for pain was discovered. The only reason he returned was because his father and two older brothers were killed, requiring him to take up the title. His honor has him bound to the contracts meant for his brother—including a marriage—but first he has to meet his bride.

Lulu—a professional dominatrix—was in a scene with a client when she tripped and fell, waking up in a strange house in a strange world with no idea what to think. She’s either part of an elaborate scene for another client or it’s all just a dream. But the man she woke up to…he makes her want to live in the dream forever. When she’s given the choice to run and hide or complete the contract for marriage to Warrick, she chooses the latter. She can’t help the way she’s drawn to this beautiful, powerful, man and the secrets she can see he’s hiding beneath his cross façade.

Warrick knows Lulu’s secret—even if she doesn’t believe it—and he knows that marrying her will be the best way to keep her safe. But Lulu stirs something deep inside that he’s worked for years to hide. When Lulu realizes his masochistic tendencies it’s up to her to force him to let down his domineering guard and submit. He needs to learn that what he wants, what he yearns for is not only beautiful but something she can give him but getting him to submit is a task that won’t come easily to either of them.

As they begin their dance of husband and wife can two people who’ve never known trust or love learn to submit to each other?

  • Hot in Handcuffs

Hot in Handcuffs by Sylvia Day

Hot in Handcuffs is $1.99! This is an erotic romance anthology by Sylvia Day, Shayla Black, & Shiloh Walker. All of the heroes are involved in law enforcement and I’m assuming the novellas will make use of handcuffs in some way. These are erotic romance novellas, so expect a heaping dose of sexytimes and some very light plot.

Three all-new novellas of erotic disobedience.

    Arresting Desire – Shayla Black
FBI Agent Jon Bocelli never stopped wanting beautiful professor Lucia DiStefano. She’s interested in taking her first lover, and he intends to be that man. When her past puts her life in danger, Jon risks everything to save her and prove this fling is forever.

    On Fire – Sylvia Day
When Deputy Marshal Jared Cameron investigates a series of arson attacks in a seaside town, the biggest blast of heat comes from sexy fire inspector Darcy Michaels—until their scorching after-hours affair is compromised by a secret from Darcy’s past.

    The Unwilling – Shiloh Walker
Mica Greer and her former lover, ex-FBI agent Colby Mathis, once shared an intimate past and a powerful psychic gift. Now, they’ve been reunited by a bizarre series of murders—and an electrifying passion that could put them both in jeopardy.

This sentence really bothers me (and I hope it’s just a bad decision by the blurb writer, not representative of the actual book): “it’s up to her to force him to let down his domineering guard and submit.”

Erm, no, it is most definitely not “up to her.” That’s not how BDSM works. She doesn’t get to make that choice. She can make it clear that the safe is space for him to make that choice, but it’s his choice.

The Undoing is my favorite book of the Call of the Crows series. And I LOVE that series. Ski is a bespectacled, nerdy, sweet badass. So is Jace. So much love for these two and this book.

  3. SusanH says:

Hooray! The Undoing is my favorite of the Crows books due to my deep love of Jace. I’d been holding off on buying it in hopes of a sale.

Decent portrayals of disability are so infrequent, Fortune Favors the Wicked was a one-click for me. A character actually living with a disability and no magic cures? Yes please!

Passion Favors the Bold, the second book after Fortune Favors the Wicked is .99 at Amazon. I just finished it yesterday and can highly recommend both of them! Theresa Romain is becoming an auto-buy author for me

  7. TK says:

I DNF the Theresa Romain. There’s only so much ahistoricity I can take in my romance novels, and that one absolutely jumped the shark. Social attitudes to courtesans amongst the middle class of the period were just not that forgiving.

  8. kitkat9000 says:

Um, is the Duke on that last cover wearing a corset? Because as far as I know only two types of men did that back then and neither had that model’s physique.

  9. kitkat9000 says:

Sorry, that was the 3rd cover, The Duke and the Domina.

  10. Cristie says:

@kitkat9000-maybe she’s the Duke and he’s the domina;)

  11. Suzanne W. says:

Just discovered that The Hooker and the Hermit (L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid) is FREE on Google Play. I don’t know how long it will last, but it’s worth checking!

For any William Gibson fans – Spook Country by William Gibson is $1.99 at Amazon and Kobo – this came out in 2006 and it’s a contemporary, not sf/f, although it has a really similar tone to his cyberpunk novels. I read it at least 10y ears ago and thought it was good but a little light weight. IIRC, he was writing about the present(ish) as if it were the future, but of course now it’s in the past, so I have no idea how well it will hold up
