Links: Yarn, Sandra Bullock, & Disney

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Hi there, everyone! It’s Wednesday Links time! This is where we discuss neat things we’ve seen around the internet and share them all with you. It’s also a great way to take a break during the the hump day slump.

First, I want to share an amazing Kickstarter I backed! It’s nearly halfway to its goal with two weeks left. It’s called Seventh Circle and is an urban fantasy visual novel. I love the art style and some of the character bios have already been released. I’m always looking for great visual novels for English-speakers!

Any Smashwords readers in the Bitchery? They’ve recently announced that they’ll be offering up audio services!

Smashwords today entered the audiobook market via a partnership with Findaway Voices.

Over 100,000 Smashwords authors and publishers now have convenient access to audiobook production and distribution services. The agreement gives authors and publishers greater control over audiobook pricing, rights, and distribution, and all without exclusivity or lockups.

I’m very curious about this, as Smashwords does a great job of breaking down the costs associated with production. My only concern is whether or not Smashwords authors can afford it and if they’ll take advantage of it.

Shoutout to Elyse for showing me this Instagram account. Check out PrettyGoodYarns, which pairs books and gorgeously colored skeins.

I feel like went through a phase where I was obsessed with Sandra Bullock. I fully expect that obsession to kick back in over the new Ocean’s 8 movie. Here’s a pretty thoughtful piece on Bullock’s wardrobe in While You Were Sleeping, and why every outfit could double as pajamas:

It’s important to note that Lucy is the only person in the movie who is dressed like they took a sick day from work and are on the couch, catching up on Law & Order. Everyone else’s costumes are of a normal size and largely not cashmere. Which is their loss.

They do seem to be aware, however, that Lucy is living her best, most hygge life. This is her landlord and his creeper son. As you can see their clothes are tailored to the fit of their bodies. They are sleeping on sleepwear as outerwear. ‘Tis a pity.

While You Were Sleeping takes place during the Christmas season in Chicago so it’s a big plot point that it’s basically negative 20 degrees. Other characters react to this with trenches, overcoats, and other winter wear. Lucy does them all one better by dressing like someone who is camping out for concert tickets to a Pearl Jam show. She layers obsessively for maximum snuggliness, including a super long wool coat that reaches past her ankles. She’s like a sleep sorceress.

I would love to embrace my best pajamas-as-regular-day-wear self.

Going around on Twitter is a Disney vs. Pixar movie bracket, where people can battle out which movie reigns supreme. Instead of doing actual work, I filled out the bracket. Now, before anyone comes at me for my choices, I was just using what I was given, as some obvious movies are left off the list.

Amanda's Disney vs Pixar bracket in which the movie, Wall-E reigns supreme.

Wall-E vs. Mulan might be the hardest decision I will have to make all year. If you want to fill out your own, here’s a blank version.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Findaway Voices has been available for a long time for audio for those who don’t want to be chained to Audible/Amazon. Prices are in the same range, but Findaway doesn’t offer “royalty share,” which is a “perk” Audible offers authors for exclusivity wherein the narrator recoups thousands of dollars of work in dribs and drabs as the audiobook sells (if it sells at all), along with the author. Cover artists and editors don’t take payment on consignment, so it’s only fair audiobook narrators should be paid at the time of their work, too, but not everyone shares that philosophy. (Certainly not Audible.)

Audiobooks are a hefty up-front investment, but plenty of self-publishers have been making it for years already.

The one redeeming feature of my otherwise low-grade horrible employment situation is that I get to work from home, which also means that I get to wear pyjamas all day, every day, and I can even occasionally justify buying more of them by calling them “work clothes.” Silver linings!

I’m loving the new “Forever35” podcast! It’s hosted by Doree Shafrir (formerly of BuzzFeed and author of “Startup”) and Kate Spencer (“The Dead Moms Club” and UCB member) and they talk about women and self-care. They’ve interviewed Jasmine Guillory (“The Wedding Date”) and Jenny Tan (“The Summer I Turned Pretty” series) and many more. It’s a great podcast and there’s a thriving FB group.

  4. The “blank” version still has to have you believe that there is some method of seeding by which Wall-E and The Incredibles meet in the first round of a 64-team tournament.

Not even Roger Goodell is that stupid. But apparently the dude who did the original seeding is. (I don’t know from Inside Out, but I’ve seen a lot of people on Twitter call it their Favorite Disney, or at least Top Three. So that’s three of a probable Top Five [at least] in the same foursome.)

I always thought that Lucy was wearing her dad’s clothes as a sweet way for the costumer to show that she still missed him.

Now I want to watch While You Were Sleeping again.

I came across this article in my rss reader:
“In the last few days, word has spread among independent erotica authors on social media that Amazon was quietly changing its policies for erotic novels. Five authors I spoke to, and several more on social media, have reported that their books were stripped of their best seller rankings—essentially hiding them from casual browsing on the site, and separating them from more mainstream, safe-for-work titles.”
