  • Goddess of the Hunt

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare is $1.99! If you like historical romances with house parties, this book was mentioned in the comments of a Rec League post. Sarah gave this a C, citing difficulties with the heroine:

I loved everything except the heroine, Lucy. And despite my joy at discovering such elegant and delicious writing, and a collection of characters I eagerly pursued through the pages of the novel, Lucy’s complete idiocy, stubbornness, and determination to ruin herself in the eyes of society and in the eyes of the reader made it impossible for me to truly enjoy the book as much as I wanted. Because of her, the grade dropped bit by bit until the skill of the writing and the joy of the other characters were at outright war with my snarls at Lucy.

In this lush and seductive novel, exciting new author Tessa Dare takes desire to brazen heights.

Ever the bold adventuress, Lucy Waltham has decided to go hunting for a husband. But first she needs some target practice. So she turns to her brother’s best friend, Jeremy Trescott, the Earl of Kendall, to hone her seductive wiles on him before setting her sights on another man. But her practice kisses spark a smoldering passion–one that could send all her plans up in smoke.

Jeremy has an influential title, a vast fortune, and a painful past full of long-buried secrets. He keeps a safe distance from his own emotions, but to distract Lucy from her reckless scheming, he must give his passions free rein. Their sensual battle of wills is as maddening as it is delicious, but the longer he succeeds in managing the headstrong temptress, the closer Jeremy comes to losing control. When scandal breaks, can he bring himself to abandon Lucy to her ruin? Or will he risk his heart and claim her for his own?

As the co-owner of the town’s only kennel, Lilah Young has good reason to be distracted behind the wheel—there are puppies, a piglet, and a duck in her Jeep. But, she doesn’t find it hard to focus on the sexy, gorgeous stranger she’s collided with.

Lilah has lived in Sunshine all her life, and though Brady is just passing through, he has her abandoning her instincts and giving in to a primal desire. • Wagon Train Cinderella

Wagon Train Cinderella by Shirley Kennedy

Wagon Train Cinderella by Shirley Kennedy is 99c at most vendors! This is an American historical romance and a Cinderella retelling set during a wagon train to California. Many readers loved the unconventional setting, but found the author did more telling than showing during the story. Is this anyone’s catnip?

Love can lead you out of the wilderness…

1851, Overland Trail to California. As a baby, Callie was left on the doorstep of an isolated farmhouse in Tennessee. The Whitaker family took her in, but have always considered her more a servant than a daughter. Scorned by her two stepsisters, Callie is forced to work long hours and denied an education. But a new world opens to her when the Whitakers join a wagon train to California—guided by rugged Luke McGraw…

A loner, haunted by a painful past, Luke plans to return to the wilderness once his work is done. But he can’t help noticing how poorly Callie is treated—or how unaware she is of her beauty and intelligence. As the two become closer over the long trek west, Callie’s confidence grows. And when disaster strikes, Callie emerges as the strong one—and the woman Luke may find the courage to love at last…

  1. CelineB says:

There’s another Shirley Kennedy book that’s .99, River Queen Rose. I’ve been debating buying it for a couple days. Has anyone read that one?

  2. Rose says:

Wagon Train Cinderella was pretty light on the romance. It’s fun historical fiction, but it reads more as “plucky girl in the Old West finds self-actualization in the midst of grueling conditions and cute guy hangs around on the periphery.” Which is great, don’t get me wrong–I grew up devouring those stories–but the romantic elements are fairly light.

  3. Deborah says:

The Truth About Cads and Dukes, the second book in Elisa Braden’s Rescued from Ruin series, is 0.99 at Amazon. The arrogant Duke of Blackstone steps up to marry plump, bookish Jane Huxley after his brother nearly destroys the shy wallflower’s reputation for a wager. (Historical tic alerts: Jane fangirls Pride & Prejudice, too many people call Blackstone by his first name, and there may be times you wonder where the servants are/have been…kinda like stage props that appear out of thin air.)

This series does read better in order, so start stockpiling the individual books at sale prices!

  4. Sue says:

Oh man, seeing Goddess of the Hunt reminds me of how much I hated Too Stupid To Live heroines. This heroine and the one from… Siren something something made me so angry, I DNFed them both, which is a rarity for me. And now, Tessa Dare is one of my favorite authors and an auto-buy! Backlists can be funny and uneven things.

  5. Peggy says:

The Better to Kiss You With by MIchelle Osgood is $.99 at Amazon. Found this on a list of recommended f/f romance.

  6. Anonymous says:

I hated the heroine in Goddess of the Hunt SO MUCH.

  7. Caitlin says:

backlists are *so* uneven. I *love* Tessa Dare—she is one of my autobuys and a feel-good read for me when everything sucks—and that first series just doesn’t do it for me, at all. In fact, it pisses me off. Así es la vida or something, I guess.

  8. oceanjasper says:

I’ve never read Goddess of the Hunt because the reviews put me right off. But I’ve always thought it was a great title, in comparison to the awful generic Avon titles of her other books.

  9. Joanna says:

@Deborah. Thanks! I tried the Truth About Cads and Dukes on audio and didn’t like the narrator so I quit but for that price I can try the ebook.

Also I think I read Rumor Has It a couple of years ago but don’t remember much, and what I do remember is of secondary characters not the main couple, so I don’t think the romance aspect was very strong.

  10. Karin says:

I enjoyed Cads and Dukes. I love it when a hero has serious hots for the plump girl, so well worth the price for me, but the historical versimilitude was off. And that Cinderella story is calling my name.
