Every Heart a Doorway

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is $2.99! I originally found out about this book from Reader MirandaB on a previous Hide Your Wallet post and had to get my hands on it. Several readers also picked it up and mentioned it in the comments of Whatcha Reading? May 2016 Edition. Readers loved the world McGuire created, but be warned that the book is rather short.
Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children

No QuestsChildren have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.
But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.
Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.
But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.
No matter the cost.

The Highlander’s Princess Bride by Vanessa Kelly is $1.99! This is the third book in the Improper Princesses series and can be read as a standalone. Some readers noticed this book is inspired by Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, if that’s your jam. Others mentioned that the book is rather long and can feel like it at times.
In Vanessa Kelly’s enchanting series, three young women descended from royalty overcome their scandalous beginnings to win the hearts of the ton’s most eligible men . . .
The illegitimate daughter of the Prince Regent might be expected to pursue various dubious professions. Actress, perhaps, or artist’s model. Even courtesan. Victoria Knight, however, has become a governess—a respectable choice, until she travels to Scotland to meet her new charges. The younger brothers of Nicholas Kendrick, Earl of Arnprior, aren’t children at all. They’re brawny, wild Highland men. As for the Earl, he’s handsome, guarded, and far too compelling . . . especially for a woman hiding a dark secret.Nick needs a proper teacher to transform his unmarriageable brothers—and a sensible,
straight-laced wife for himself. Miss Knight seems to fit the bill on both counts. But he soon discovers there is more to Victoria than he thought. It’s not just her notorious origins, or the danger that’s followed her all the way to Scotland. It’s the fiery loyalty beneath that sedate façade. This, the real Victoria, is the woman Nick is starting to desire so desperately. And what an earl wants, he’ll use every seductive means to get . . .Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

Wicked Ride by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99! This is a paranormal romance with a cop heroine and an immortal Irish biker hero. I know we’ve debated about motorcycle clubs in the past and the book’s description makes mention that this particular MC is up to some pretty rough stuff, regardless of the hero’s involvement. However, many readers loved the chemistry between the very much alpha hero and the heroine. Sound interesting to anyone?
Alexandra Monzelle is a hard-fighting, heat-packing Seattle vice cop, and she’s not much interested in being protected. Her short skirt and sex-kitten heels are tools to lure her suspects into talking about the deadly new drug hitting the streets. She can take care of herself and then some. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to get that through to Kellach Dunne.
Kellach is a fresh import from Dublin, and he’s landed at the heart of a vicious motorcycle club that deals in guns, narcotics, and mayhem. He’s all male, all rough power—and all interference in her damn investigation. Maybe he’s one of the good guys. Maybe not. Lex knows an affair with an immortal like him would risk everything. No matter how delicious he looks…

Stolen Kisses by Annie Rains is 99c! This is a contemporary, friends to loves romance and the second in the Blushing Bay series. If you’re looking for a sweet, fluffy, feel-good romance, readers recommend this one, though some reviewers found the characters a little one-dimensional.
The irresistible Sawyer brothers of Blushing Bay, North Carolina, are back in this enchanting novel from the USA Today bestselling author of Forbidden Kisses and the Hero’s Welcome series.
Krista Nelson loves being a pediatric nurse. What she doesn’t love is her demanding boss and stressful workload. Fortunately, Krista knows she can count on a waterfront happy hour every Wednesday with her childhood best friend, Noah Sawyer, the one part of her life she never wants to change. But, like it or not, things are changing—because Krista can’t stop wondering what would happen if she grabbed Noah by the collar and kissed him like it was her job.
Bored of the superficial women he’s been dating, Noah’s putting his love life on hold so he can focus on his family’s high-end fishing business. Sure, there are moments when he’s tempted by Krista’s soft lips and killer smile—but her friendship is too important to Noah. How could he let himself jeopardize everything they share? The trouble is, if he doesn’t take the real risk of opening his heart, Noah might just let the perfect catch get away.

One of Seanan McGuire’s other standalone novellas “Dusk Or Dark Or Dawn Or Day” is also marked down to $1.99.
The Wayward Children series (Every Heart a Doorway) are all novellas. I highly recommend all three books. (I didn’t love the 2nd as much as the 1st and 3rd ones, but it was still good.)
@Lostshadows: I wasn’t crazy about the second one either. She was trying so hard to sound fairy-tale-ish, that the language felt stilted to me. Also, I wanted more about the girls’ lives on the Moor.
@MirandaB: I didn’t really have a problem with how it was told, just that I already knew what would happen.
Every Heart A Doorway tore my heart out, stomped on it, then stuffed it back into my chest. I cried in joy at the ending and literally hugged the book when I closed it.
So I *highly* recommend it.
As of Friday, the first book in Skyla Dawn Cameron’s Livi Talbot series, Solomon’s Seal, is $2.99.
EX-DEBUTANTE. SINGLE MOTHER. TREASURE HUNTER.
Disowned and left penniless for getting pregnant as a teen, former celebutante Olivia Talbot was willing to do whatever it took to provide for her daughter… including become a treasure hunter. Since the Pulse hit, activating relics of legend, there are plenty of artifacts to be had—not to mention wealthy clients willing to pay top dollar for them.
Just as her daughter’s private school tuition cheque bounces, Livi gets an offer that could be the break she needs to return to some semblance of her former life. A potential new client wants her to travel to Ethiopia and retrieve the Seal of Solomon—a mythical ring said to control demons and djinn—and this bounty comes with one hell of a financial pay off.
The deadline: a week. The team: unreliable. The competition: her world-renowned archaeologist older brother. Nothing Livi can’t handle… Except the danger goes beyond a few subterranean serpent-dragons she might encounter or tangling with her employer’s deadly second-in-command. This client isn’t all he seems, and handing him the ring might be worse than what he’ll do to her—and her daughter—if she doesn’t.
T. Kingfisher’s The Seventh Bride is 99 pennies. I’ve actually read this one (not just knocking it off my wishlist). NOT a romance but a dark fairy tale in which the young heroine saves herself and others from a right bastard with ingenuity, caring, and the help of her fellow prisoners and a hedgehog, dammit.
A Season of Hopes and Dreams by Lynsey James is 99 pennies also, on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Season-Hopes-Dreams-Lynsey-James-ebook/dp/B071Z9BZXQ, a 4.1 star read on Goodreads.
I just want to mention that the Hero in Wicked Ride has a motorbike, but he’s only undercover in the MC to figure out where the fantasy poison drug comes from.
He’s not an actual MC member and I really liked all of Rebecca Zanetti’s book set in this world (this is the first of a spin-off series)
My Image of You by Melanie Moreland is on sale for a limited time until 1/27. Currently 1.99 on us retailers. It Random House/Loveswept title so infrequent on sales. I’d get on it before time is up.
