We’re back with more recommendations! What kind of recs?
More podcast episode recommendations!
Because it can be really intimidating to be told about a great podcast, and then find they have a few dozen (or over two hundred – hi!) episodes in the archives. Which one? Where to start? I have suggestions!
So. Many. Suggestions.
First: Amanda and I have been loving Punch Up the Jam, which takes a deep dive into individual popular songs.
As they put it, “Miel Bredouw and Demi Adejuyigbe are comedians, writers, and best friends, with absolutely no qualifications to “fix” popular songs— but that won’t stop them from trying. PUNCH UP THE JAM is a show cataloguing their descent into madness as they review, rewrite, and remix all the hits you love to hate, or just love (until they ruin it for you.)”
Sounds good to me!
Amanda recommends a recent episode, 005, which “focuses on ‘Crash Into Me’ by Dave Matthews and it’s a song I love, but they talk about how creepy the lyrics are and yes they are. And to “punch up the jam,” they turn it into spoken word poetry and I was cry laughing at how uncomfortable it made me.”
You can find Punch Up the Jam at their website, on Stitcher, and in iTunes.
…
I just discovered Which Witch is Witch, wherein X and Y each bring a witch from popular culture to an episode, outlining that individuals qualifications to be counted as a witch, and then picking which of the two they’d want in their respective covens.
It’s very fun and adorable, especially if you like taking a nerdy plunge into pop culture witchcraft.
I recommend the first episode, “The Five Laws of Witchyness,” so you get the Rubric of Witchyness, and the episode on The Sandersons vs. The Spellmans.
…
Pop Culture Happy Hour’s Linda Holmes was a recent guest on The Hilarious World of Depression, and the episode itself as well as the few prior are really moving. Just like it says on the box, there are stories of dealing with mental illness from funny, sharp people, so there’s poignancy and snort laughing mixed together. You can find it on Stitcher and on iTunes.
…
And romance podcast fans, heads up! Two podcasts to tell you about!
First: The Wicked Wallflowers Club, with Jenny Nordback and Sarah Hawley, which was recently featured in EW’s Must List — way to go!
They’ve got some terrific interviews, including this one with Alisha Rai, which happened because she happened to be sitting behind them in The Ripped Bodice.
You can find them on their website, on iTunes, and on Stitcher.
And, if that’s not enough (of course it’s not!) there’s also Heaving Bosoms, with Erin and Melody.
In each episode, they do a deep breakdown of a particular romance novel. As they say in their description, they take themselves VERY seriously. SNORT.
They’ve taken a look at When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare, Christmastime Cowboy by Maisey Yates, and more.
You can find Heaving Bosoms on their website, on Stitcher, and on iTunes.
So what podcasts have you found recently? What episodes do you recommend? Share in the comments – I have to walk the dogs each and every day, after all.

Omg!!! I was dying for new podcasts and these look amazing!!! Thanks for the great recommendations!

Bim and Nichole have wonderful conversations about their thirsty-ness. Each episode includes a fanfic drabble about the episode’s subject(s).
Don’t listen to this without headphones/solitude (at least at first), as it includes adult language and topics.
I discovered The Hilarious World of Depression recently via Wil Wheaton but hadn’t kept up with other eps. Must download all of these now!
The podcast Switchblade Sisters features film critic April Wolfe discussing a favorite genre film with a female film maker.
The podcast is excellent, but her recent episode on Rosemary’s Baby has such a good discussion on loving a thing by a terrible person and whether you can distance the at from the artist.
I have turned into a complete podcast junkie! Luckily I get to listen all day at work (thank goodness to tune out my co-worker’s love of country music – sorry, not a fan!)
The History Chicks is two friends who have read several biographies on a famous/infamous woman and then discuss. Who knew Josephine Baker was a spy in WWII and won a French medal of honor for her efforts!
The Big Listen is a great source to find out about even more podcasts
The Pirate History Podcast
Uncivil – this is one of my most favorite of the newer podcasts, it’s a deeper dive into stories of the civil war – most interesting was the episode about women who served in the military in disguise. I kept thinking,’This is soo interesting, and there is definitely potential for a romance book’
I have a thing for historical podcasts, much like my preference for romance books 🙂
I’ve recently burned through the podcast Bonnets at Dawn, a show by two women comics … editors (pretty sure) about the Brontes and Jane Austen, or as they say Team Austen vs Team Bronte. It’s a loose, chatty show, but they cover history, particular books, and do interviews. They’ve recently covered North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell in a miniseries and plan to do a miniseries on Louisa May Alcott soon.
I have listened to every episode of The Hilarious World of Depression. Love it. I’m a sucker for true crime podcast. Most recently I started Atlanta Monster, it’s only 2 episodes in so still easy to get onboard. Just finished Young Charlie, about Charles Manson. Cults and Serial Killers are must hear for me. The Moth stories are always entertaining.
I can’t remember if I mentioned this or not, but I binged hard the Unsolved Murders True Crime Stories Podcast. While I didn’t think of myself as a true crime fan, it satisfies my love of history.
@Pam Craig, if you want more Manson, the series on You Must Remember This is excellent.
I really enjoy radiolab, which is a show about curiosity. The last episode I listened too was about how to be a hero. Very diverse and interesting.
Also recommend gastropod which looks at food through the lens of science and history.
After reading this post, I know have so many new podcasts to listen too, where will I find the time.
From the last month of Planet Money I would recommend #813 The Produce Show, #670 The Santa Suit, #544 The M & M Anomaly, #816 Bitcoun Losers, and #817 The Gun Man.
From Only Game the episode The Gift of Hockey, Althea Gibson, World Bicycle Relief includes stories about the woman who broke the racial barrier in both golf and tennis and a story about a charity who gives bicycles to girls in developing countries (and why that is so important for their safety).
And also from Only a Game the episode Baltimore Colts, Endurance Cycling, Bernard’s King’s Time in Hollywood includes a story about the top woman ultra endurance cycles.
* Sorry Bitcoun should say Bitcoin
And the name of the second podcast is Only A Game
@Pam Craig and Kate:
Agreed about You Must Remember This. I also like the rest of the stories on Hollywood and Crime such as the Black Dahlia.
Also for those who love the Olympics (and I LOVE the Olympics), there is a new “official” podcast out from NBC and Vox called “The Podium.” I am only two episodes in (the trailer, if that even counts as an episode, and am listening to the second which features an interview with author Chang Rae Lee who was a very young child when his family left South Korea to move to the USA). It seems like the first few episodes are more about South Korea and then the next about the athletes and sports of the games.
I don’t think I can emphasize enough how much I love the Olympics (including hosting a very small viewing party for the Opening Ceremonies), so when I heard about this new podcast, I had to move it up to the top of my list (we need a good acronym for “To Listen To List” like we have for TBR – my “To Listen To List” is just as daunting as Mt. TBR.
OMG! So many amazing podcasts! When will I listen to them all…
