Historical Romances, Plus Scifi

  • Fortune’s Pawn

    Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach

Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach is $1.99! This is a scifi novel with some strong romantic elements and, in the past, I’ve heard it described as Kate Daniels in space. Many people loved this book and its worldbuilding, though there are a few reviewers who said they never connected with any of the characters.

Devi Morris isn’t your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It’s a combination that’s going to get her killed one day – but not just yet.

That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn’t misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she’s found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn’t give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.

If Sigouney Weaver in Alien met Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, you’d get Deviana Morris — a hot new mercenary earning her stripes to join an elite fighting force. Until one alien bite throws her whole future into jeopardy.

  • A Lady’s Code of Misconduct

A Lady’s Code of Misconduct by Meredith Duran

PODCAST RECOMMENDEDA Lady’s Code of Misconduct by Meredith Duran is $1.99! This historical romance was recommended on a podcast episode with Sarah, Elyse, and Karen of the Knit One, Geek Two podcast. Karen mentioned that she’s a sucker for amnesia stories and this one has an amnesiac hero. Have you read this one?

The next steamy historical romance in USA TODAY bestselling and RITA award-winning author Meredith Duran’s “wonderfully indulgent” (Publishers Weekly) Rules for the Reckless series.

    A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL…
Trapped in the countryside, facing an unwanted marriage and the theft of her fortune, Jane Mason is done behaving nicely. To win her freedom, she’ll strike a deal with the most dangerous man she knows—a rising star in politics, whose dark good looks mask an even darker heart.

    …NEVER GOES TO PLAN.
The bitter past has taught Crispin Burke to trust no one. He’ll gladly help a lovely young heiress, provided she pays a price. Yet when a single mistake shatters his life, it is Jane who holds the key to his salvation. And in a world that no longer makes sense, Crispin slowly realizes that she may be the only thing worth fighting for…

  • The Runaway Countess

The Runaway Countess by Leigh LaValle

The Runaway Countess by Leigh LaValle is 99c! This is the first book in the Nottinghamshire series (boy, that’s a mouthful). It was also originally published by Samhain under the same name, in case the details sounded familiar. Readers enjoyed the enemies to lovers romance, while others said this seemed like a lesser executed The Spymaster’s Lady.

USA Today bestselling author Leigh LaValle delivers a captivating novel of passion and intrigue…

Once the darling of high society, Mazie Chetwyn knows firsthand how quickly the rich and powerful turn their backs on the less fortunate. Orphaned, penniless and determined to defy their ruthless whims, she joins forces with a local highwayman who steals from the rich to give to the poor.

Then the pawn broker snitches, and Mazie is captured by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. A man who is far too handsome, far too observant…and surely as corrupt as his father once was.

Sensible, rule-driven Trent Carthwick, twelfth Earl of Radford, is certain the threat of the gallows will prompt the villagers’ beloved Angel of Kindness to reveal the highwayman’s identity. But his bewitching captive volunteers nothing—except a sultry, bewildering kiss.

And so the games begin. Trent feints, Mazie parries. He threatens, she pretends nonchalance. He cajoles, she rebuffs. Thwarted at every turn, Trent probes deep into her one vulnerability—her past. There he finds the leverage he needs and a searing truth that challenges all he believes about right and wrong.

  • Never Love a Scoundrel

Never Love a Scoundrel by Darcy Burke

Never Love a Scoundrel by Darcy Burke is 99c at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This historical romance has a mentorship theme where the heroine helps the hero back into the ton, which I think is interesting because I feel like the roles tend to be reversed in romances. There’s always a Henry Higgins! Readers loved the hero, but found the chemistry between the two main characters was lacking.

When the beast leaves his lair…
Labeled a lunatic and a reprobate, Lord Jason Lockwood finds solace in debauchery outside the realm of Polite Society. Scarred both inside and out, Jason can’t possibly hope to regain a place within the ton…until he meets an alluring and persuasive young lady. When she offers to help him reclaim respectability, he’s tempted not by the possibility of a better reputation, but by the lure of seduction. With her by his side, he not only sees what he’s been missing, but also how much he stands to lose.

    A beauty’s touch provokes his desire…
Lady Lydia Prewitt is everything a debutante should be: beautiful, dowried, and in possession of a sterling reputation. But Lydia’s former life as a gossip has ensured a lonely path. When the opportunity to assist the scandalous yet seductive Lord Lockwood gain entry into London’s best ballrooms, she glimpses a chance for a future she never dreamed of—if he’s willing to meet her halfway. But how can she risk falling in love with a scoundrel if it means joining him in exile?

  1. MirandaB says:

The ‘scoundrel’ looks like he’s sniffing the lady’s bosom.

  2. Nina says:

The Heroine of the scoundrel may be checking for the beginnings of a bald spot.

  3. Tam says:

Reviews mentioning Kate Daniels and the Vorkosigans?! I’m in!

  4. Colette says:

Big fan of Rachel Bach’s Fortune’s Pawn and the other two books in the trilogy. Highly recommend the series.

  5. Lora says:

    Scoundrel attempts to breastfeed?

  6. Ren Benton says:

The scoundrel is going to get his neck snapped before he gropes his way to the assassin’s dagger strapped to her thigh. That’s why you Never Love a Scoundrel — as soon as your dark ops handlers find out your judgment has been compromised, you have to kill him.

  7. Darlynne says:

I love Rachel Bach’s space trilogy. Devi is so capable and driven, sure of her goals; I admired her completely. I suppose a Kate Daniels comparison isn’t off the mark, but FIREFLY has to figure in there, too. Ditto Ann Aguirre’s Sirantha Jax series, all stellar space opera.

  8. Lady Voluptua Raventresses says:

I really like the cover of The Runaway Countess. It’s a more normal embrace than on most covers as well as suggests something about their relationship dynamic, the balance of colors is appealing, he has arm hair like most human men, and he is utterly delectable. Well done.

  9. Tam says:

I liked the Rachel Bach so much that I immediately tried to find the rest of the trilogy… and my library doesn’t have them. Have been forced to purchase two $9.99 Kindle books to find closure. (In the immortal words of Admiral Akbar, it’s a TRAP!) 😛

  10. Ava says:

New Years resolution : I will not read any book until i finish the big important project
6 January …i have finished Rachel Bach’s trilogy and I want moooooore

  12. Deborah says:

Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt is 1.99 at Amazon
The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare is 1.99 at Amazon

…Sunday’s Amazon Daily Deals are worth a look

  13. What the Foucault says:

New Year’s resolution was to NOT, I repeat, NOT buy any more books until I’d finished the ones I have.

    Ha. Ha.
