Historical Romances, Including a Boxed Set

  • Behind a Lady’s Smile

Behind a Lady’s Smile by Jane Goodger

Behind a Lady’s Smile by Jane Goodger is 99c! I’m completely in love with this cover. I’m also not a huge historical romance reader, but the description has me considering a purchase. If you’re on the fence about this book, here’s a Goodreads review that made my morning:

Crass language and explicit scenes make this book, and author, a no-go for me. I prefer the regency/western genres to be clean and perchance a bit more romanticized. Gentlemen should be just that, gentlemen. And the women should be ladies worth waiting for. Nothing wrong with embracing chivalry and good old fashioned morals.

    The Lost Heiresses

It’s one thing for a girl to lose her way, quite another to lose her heart…

Genny Hayes could charm a bear away from a pot of honey. But raised in the forests of Yosemite, she’s met precious few men to practice her smiles upon. Until a marvelously handsome photographer appears in her little corner of the wilderness and she convinces him to take her clear across the country and over the seas to England, where she has a titled grandmother and grandfather waiting to claim her. On their whirlwind journey, she’ll have the chance to bedazzle and befuddle store clerks and train robbers, society matrons and big city reporters, maids and madams, but the one man she most wants to beguile seems determined to play the gentlemen and leave her untouched. Until love steps in and knocks them both head over heels…

  • A Love to Remember

A Love to Remember by Bronwen Evans

A Love to Remember by Bronwen Evans is 99c! This is a second chance historical romance and the most recent release in The Disgraced Lords series. Some felt the last portion of the book didn’t really match the tone of the previous parts. However, many loved the heroine and her reunion with the hero. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

A fiercely independent duchess and a brooding, reclusive earl are tested by the demands of desire in this unforgettable romance from the USA Today bestselling author of A Kiss of Liesand A Night of Forever.

For Rose Deverill, one husband was enough. As the wealthy widow of the Duke of Roxborough, she has cultivated an unsavory reputation meant to discourage wife hunters. Thanks to a string of steamy affairs, Rose is perfectly content to be known by polite society as the “Wicked Widow”—until she’s reunited with the man she fell in love with at age fifteen. Their bedroom encounters are scorching, but it breaks Rose’s heart to wonder whether her reckless behavior ruined her for Philip Flagstaff.

The second son of the Earl of Cumberland, Philip never wanted the title. But after Philip’s older brother, Robert, follows him into the Battle of Waterloo, his worst fears come to pass. Now Robert lies in a soldier’s grave, and Philip is determined never to pass on the inheritance to children of his own. Then Rose appears, soothing the pain with her delightful curves and passionate kisses. The notorious Duchess seems to want nothing from him—and yet Philip has never ached to give a woman more.

  • Wicked Designs

    Wicked Designs by Lauren Smith

Wicked Designs by Lauren Smith is 99c! This book is the first in The League of Rogues series. If you already own this one, a couple more books in the series are also priced at 99c! Some readers mentioned being wary because of the kidnapping element of the plot, but many were won over by Smith’s writing. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

The League of Rogues takes what they want—but have they taken on too much?

For too long Miss Emily Parr has been subject to the whims of her indebted uncle and the lecherous advances of his repulsive business partner. Her plan to be done with dominating men forever is simple—find herself a kind husband who will leave her to her books.

It seems an easy enough plan, until she is unexpectedly abducted by an incorrigible duke who hides a wounded spirit behind flashing green eyes.

Godric St. Laurent, Duke of Essex, spends countless nights at the club with his four best friends, and relishes the rakish reputation society has branded him with. He has no plans to marry anytime soon—if ever. But when he kidnaps an embezzler’s niece, the difficult debutante’s blend of sweetness and sharp tongue make him desperate for the one thing he swears he never wanted: love.

Yet as they surrender to passion, danger lurks in Godric’s shadowed past, waiting for him to drop his guard—and rob him of the woman he can’t live without.

Warning: This novel includes a lady who refuses to stay kidnapped, a devilish duke with a dark past, and an assortment of charming rogues who have no idea what they’ve gotten themselves into.

  • Captivated by His Kiss

    Captivated by His Kiss by

Captivated by His Kiss is 99c! This is a set of seven Regency romances. I believe these are more novella-length than full-length, but seven of them for less than a dollar is a pretty good deal. Several of the romances do take place during the holiday season, in case you’re just completely over the holidays.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Cheryl Bolen and USA Today Bestselling Author Bronwen Evans are joined by Barbara Monajem, Collette Cameron, Wendy Vella, Heather Boyd, and Lauren Smith in this exciting collection of regency romances. Be CAPTIVATED BY HIS KISS in these seven emotional stories of second chances, scandalous wagers, and the quest for true love. Lose yourself again and again in beautifully written romance.

His Lordship’s Vow by Cheryl Bolen – The exceedingly plain spinster, Miss Jane Featherstone, helps the earl she loves woo an heiress in order to honor the deathbed vow Lord Slade to his father.

To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone by Bronwen Evans – Marcus Danvers, the Marquis of Wolverstone, is renowned for his cynical demeanor. It’s rumored that long ago, a beautiful woman broke his heart. Now he lives life for pleasure. That is, until the beautiful, as she is deceitful, Contessa Orsini re-enters his life with a wager he cannot resist.

The Christmas Knot by Barbara Monajem – Widowed and destitute, Edwina White takes a job as a governess in a haunted house, and if that’s not trouble enough, her new employer is the one man she’d hoped never to meet again.

Bride of Falcon by Collette Cameron – Faced with spinsterhood, Ivonne Wimpleton takes fate into her own hands, determined to win the heart of her wholly unacceptable childhood love . . . scandal be damned.

Christmas Wishes by Wendy Vella – Desperation makes strange bedfellows, and when the only person left to turn to is a dissolute Rake, Miss Hero Appleby realizes she is about to forsake more than her reputation.

Miss Watson’s First Scandal by Heather Boyd – Overworked London banker David Hawke had two goals for his week in the seaside town of Brighton: one, recover a debt from a friend and two, relax for his remaining holiday. Marriage wasn’t part of the plan…until the girl next door barges in and turns his life upside down.

The Duelist’s Seduction by Lauren Smith – Helen Banks, disguised as her twin brother, fights a duel against Gareth Fairfax but he has other ideas in mind of how to have Helen repay her debt starting with a sinful kiss and a wicked embrace…

“Crass language and explicit scenes make this book, and author, a *one-click buy* for me.”

    Fixed that for you.

  2. Marissa Fortin says:

Who ARE these people so upset by the existence of sex in romantic relationships, that they’re compelled to leave a bad rating because of it? Purchasing just to counteract such nonsense.

  3. Ren Benton says:

*pulls up a chair* “Bless your heart. Let’s have a chat about the lie of ‘chivalry’ and ‘old-fashioned morals,’ shall we?” *4 days later, reviewer emerges from the estrogen hut cussing like a steelworker and woke af*

Honestly, though, that cover and description do scream sweet and clean, not sexy and sweary, making it difficult for a reader who tries to filter out personally objectionable material to do so.

  4. Ren Benton says:

I walk back my defense of the poor, misled reader, as “Shit” is within the first 10 paragraphs, a clear warning that here there be crude terrain unfit for delicate sensibilities. There was no need to continue past that point to get to “explicit scenes.”

  5. MrsObedMarsh says:

It’s good for Amanda that the review made her morning because it made me really annoyed! I can understand being uncomfortable with sex and strong language in books for personal taste-related reasons, but the reviewer’s internalized misogyny is so irritating. Being a Cool Girl – or in the reviewer’s case, a Good Girl – is not going to make misogynists respect you, people! Misogyny doesn’t work like that!

  6. KellyM says:

Irritating is one star reviews on books because the reviewer didn’t realize the book they reviewed was a romance. The couple on the cover, the detailed description on the book, not to mention all the other reviews aren’t obvious give aways. Obliviousness always rates a one star apparently.

  7. Amanda says:

@MrsObedMarsh: I love conversations like these!

One of my mottos for 2018 is not to yuck other people’s yums, even if I may not agree with the things they choose to consume media-wise. Obviously, this does have some limits, but regarding the initial reviewer, there are plenty of books out there that fit the bill of what she wants to read. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is personal preference, but I’m definitely with you on how sometimes romance contains internalized misogyny. I also think that “too much sex” can be a valid criticism if it overtakes the plot, but that the mere presence of sexual scenes being “bad” is entirely subjective.

I suppose what amuses me most is the inability for people to say sometimes that, “Hey, this book wasn’t for me because of these reasons,” rather than just writing off the book and the author as being bad or peddlers of smut. It’s incredibly freeing to stop reading/watching something because it’s not for you. Like why put yourself through the torment of consuming something that you aren’t enjoying? Of course, sometimes sacrifices must be made if you need to read a shark shifter erotic romance for the greater good. This reviewer hated the book, read the book, and then expelled more energy reviewing the book she hated based on the fact that it didn’t meet what she was looking for in a romance novel.

To me, I found it laughable in an “Okay, lady. You do you, I guess.”

  8. Marci says:

Hmm…the Amazon description for Wicked Designs says:

*Includes Exclusive Illustrated Scenes throughout the book!

There’s an illustration included in the Look Inside sample. I was interested enough to grab it for a buck. I’m curious to see if the added illustrations enhance the story for me or pull me out of it.

  9. Tam says:

Maybe the reviewer felt morally impelled to check the rest of the book for smut so she could warn others?

  10. LauraL says:

@ Ren Benton – The cover sure does indicate sweet and clean, not a book with a curse word in the first few pages.

Lauren Smith is a favorite of mine. The best story in the “League of Rogues” series so far, IMO, has been Her Wicked Proposal which has a blind hero. Sadly, is not on sale today.

  11. Louise says:

Maybe the reviewer felt morally impelled to check the rest of the book for smut so she could warn others?

This would seem to make her the spiritual sister of all those critics over the years who have forced themselves to read huge amounts of a genre they dislike–romance, say, or science fiction–purely so they can write articles telling the rest of the world how terrible it all is.

But honestly now: For ### sake, lady. I, personally, happen to prefer books without sex in them. But that’s me. I am not prepared to represent it as anything other than a personal, individual preference.

  12. marion says:

“Perchance” – unless you are Shakespeare or a poet I think that word used in some online book review is just a tad pretentious.

And just don’t read something you don’t like instead of being the morality police.
