  • On the Edge

On the Edge by Ilona Andrews

On the Edge by Ilona Andrews is 99c at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is the first book in The Edge urban fantasy series and, I think, it’s the only series I haven’t read by Andrews. As usual for Andrews, the worldbuilding is great, though some readers said it took them longer to connect with the characters than in Andrews other series.

Rose Drayton lives on the Edge, between the world of the Broken (where people drive cars, shop at Wal-Mart, and magic is a fairy tale) and the Weird (where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny). Only Edgers like Rose can easily travel from one world to the next, but they never truly belong in either.

Rose thought if she practiced her magic, she could build a better life for herself. But things didn’t turn out how she planned, and now she works a minimum wage, off the books job in the Broken just to survive. Then Declan Camarine, a blueblood noble straight out of the deepest part of the Weird, comes into her life, determined to have her (and her power).

But when a terrible danger invades the Edge from the Weird, a flood of creatures hungry for magic, Declan and Rose must work together to destroy them—or they’ll devour the Edge and everyone in it.

  • What Not to Bare

What Not to Bare by Megan Frampton

What Not to Bare by Megan Frampton is 99c! This historical romance has an interesting take on the fake relationship element, as the hero is the only one aware it’s fake. (I think). Regardless, it’s giving me some She’s All That vibes, which is one of my very favorite movies. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

In Megan Frampton’s witty historical romance, a woman is judged by her gown, and a man by his reputation—until both are shed in one sexy moment of seduction.

Lady Charlotte Jepstow certainly knows how to make an impression—a terrible one. Each one of her ball gowns is more ostentatiously ugly than the one before. Even she has been forced to wonder: Is she unmarried because of her abysmal wardrobe, or does she wear clashing clothing because she doesn’t want to be pursued in the first place? But when Charlotte meets Lord David Marchston, suddenly a little courtship doesn’t sound so bad after all.

David will be the first to admit he’s made some mistakes. But when he gets yanked from his post by his superiors, he is ordered to do the unthinkable to win back his position: woo his commander’s niece. If David wants his life back, he must use his skills as a negotiator to persuade society that Charlotte is a woman worth pursuing, despite her rather unusual “flair” for color. But David does such a terrific job that he develops an unexpected problem, one that violates both his rakish mentality and his marching orders: He’s starting to fall in love.

  • Crossing Hearts

    Crossing Hearts by Kimberly Kincaid

Crossing Hearts by Kimberly Kincaid is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a small town contemporary romance and the first in a series. The second book is also on sale. I know, this book features another heroine named Emerson! Sorry! Readers loved the hero in this one, but felt the book could have been cut down by about fifty pages.

Hunter Cross has no regrets. Having left his football prospects behind the day he graduated high school, he’s happy to carry out his legacy on his family’s farm in the foothills of the Shenandoah. But when a shoulder injury puts him face-to-face with the high school sweetheart who abandoned town—and him—twelve years ago, Hunter’s simple life gets a lot more complicated.

Emerson Montgomery has secrets. Refusing to divulge why she left her job as a hotshot physical therapist for a pro football team, she struggles to readjust to life in the hometown she left behind. The more time she spends with Hunter, the more Emerson finds herself wanting to trust him with the diagnosis of MS that has turned her world upside down.

But revealing secrets comes with a price. Can Hunter and Emerson rekindle their past love? Or will the realities of the present—and the trust that goes with them—burn that bridge for good?

  • Beware the Wild

Beware the Wild by Natalie Parker

Beware the Wild by Natalie C. Parker is 99c! This is described as a young adult Southern Gothic, which might be catnip for some of you. Readers loved the creepy setting, though found things seemed to be dipped in crazysauce later on. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads. It’s also the first in a series, but I didn’t see any cliffhanger warnings.

There’s something about the swamp in Sticks, Louisiana. Something different, something haunting . . . something alive. Everyone knows this, and everyone avoids going near it. And even the Mardi Gras–bead-decorated fence that surrounds it keeps people away.

Until one morning when Sterling Saucier’s older brother Phineas runs into the swamp . . .

    And doesn’t return.

Instead, a girl named Lenora May climbs out in his place, and all of a sudden, no one in Sticks remembers Phin at all. They treat Lenora May as if she’s been Sterling’s sister forever.

Sterling needs to figure out what the swamp’s done with her beloved brother and how Lenora May is connected to his disappearance—but first she’s got to find someone who believes her.

Heath Durham might be that someone. A loner shrouded behind rumors of drug addiction, Heath has had his own strange experience with the swamp. He and Sterling will have to piece together enough bits of memory and ancient swamp lore to get to the truth. But as the wild swamp encroaches on their town, Sterling and Heath may find a lot more than they expected . . . and Phin may be lost to them forever.

  1. Rose says:

Beware the Wild is giving me happy-chills from the cover alone. I will be reading.

  2. Deborah says:

Elizabeth Vaughan’s Warprize is 1.99 at Amazon.

Coincidentally, I had the paperback checked out from the library and about to come due, so now I’m race-reading to decide if I want to purchase it. I’m a little outraged that female warriors of the Plains people have the same obligation to produce 5 children before joining the army that men do. Aside from the fact that childbirth represents a significant strain on a woman’s body that a man doesn’t experience, there’s also the issue of time. Men could accomplish this goal by impregnating multiple partners in the same time frame. Women don’t have that option. WTF, Plains people?

The romance follows a satisfying classic historical model. The world-building is deft and enhances rather than overwhelms the relationship-building. (I’m a romance reader, not a fantasy reader, so this matters to me.) The heroine is probably a little too perfect, the hero a little too underdeveloped, but this is the first book in the series so maybe she gets smudged and he gets explored in the sequels.

  3. Katie F says:

On the Edge is my favorite of the Edge series, although the whole series is worth reading just to get the back story on George who reappears in Innkeeper.

  4. BC says:

On the Edge is my second favorite of the Edge series — nothing beats Cerise in book 2. But the whole series is magically wonderful.

  5. Kareni says:

My favorites of the On the Edge series are the first and fourth books. I found some of the content of books two and three to be repellent.

  6. Tam says:

I think the first and fourth Edge books are more straight romances. My favourite is the second, but it definitely has more disturbing horror elements.

  7. The Other Kate says:

Definitely would recommend both Warprize (great worldbuilding, although the plots tend not to close with the *ahem* bang I typically expect from fantasy) and the Edge series. Interesting to see the divergence of opinion in people’s favorites. I think 1 and 3 were my favorites, followed by 4. The second one features a hero who is a shapeshifter, and the author makes him think and act like a wolf, complete with social awkwardness and difficulty communicating as a human. I remember feeling that he seemed almost like he could be on the autism spectrum, and I had doubts about how the heroine was going to handle all the extra demands of that relationship. But it’s been a few years since I’ve read it.

  8. Cherryl says:

On the Edge has one of the best opening chapters of any book I have read in quite a while. I was instantly hooked. You have to be prepared for some mayhem and violence but well worth the read on the whole series.

  9. ClaireC says:

Weighing in with my own favorites in the Edge series – three and two, respectively! I think the first is actually my least favorite, but it’s still a good book. Like Katie F says, it’s fun to read the backstory for George, although I read the Edge books first, so it was fun to see him pop up in Innkeeper!

  10. Sabrina says:

Ha! I had Beware the Wild on my TBR pile and plucked it out for the Cover Challenge happening on the SBTB Goodreads group (water on the cover!). I’m a little over a halfway through and enjoying it so far, in part because it’s not taking a predictable path and throwing in little surprises. 99c is a good price, but I’m holding out final judgment on whether or not I recommend it until I finish!

  11. Sarah Y. says:

You had me at “She’s All That”.

  12. Ele says:

I recommend the Edge series, as well. Although I must say I come down on the side of book two being kind of over-the-top creepy. Plus it is set in a humid swamp. Literally — the amount of time the characters spend covered in sludge is remarkable. (Does anyone really have sexytimes in swamps?)
