Thanksgiving Romance, Thieves, & More

  • Prudence

    Prudence by Gail Carriger

    Update: Deal no longer valid.

Prudence by Gail Carriger is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched at most vendors. This book is the first book in her Custard Protocol series and Carrie gave it a B-:

The best and worst thing I could say about this series is that it’s very much like Carriger’s other series. It’s the worst thing in that there’s not a lot new in here except that it seems to be a series that gets us out of alternate universe England and into the rest of Empire. It’s the best thing because honestly Carriger’s world and style are just pure yummy candy. If you give me a five pound bag of M&M’s, it’s not like I’m going to get to the bottom and say, “Gosh darn it, this is still M&M’s!”

ON BEHALF OF QUEEN, COUNTRY…AND THE PERFECT POT OF TEA.

When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama (Rue to her friends) is given an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female would under similar circumstances — names it the Spotted Custard and floats to India in pursuit of the perfect cup of tea. But India has more than just tea on offer. Rue stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier’s wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves. Faced with a dire crisis and an embarrassing lack of bloomers, what else is a young lady of good breeding to do but turn metanatural and find out everyone’s secrets, even thousand-year-old fuzzy ones?

  • Dirty for Me

Dirty for Me by Jackie Ashenden

Dirty for Me by Jackie Ashenden is $1.99! This is the first book in the Motor City Royals series and has an opposites attract romance. There does seem to be an element of cheating. However, other readers recommend this book for fans of gritty, erotic romances. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

Ezekiel “Zee” Chase has a complicated past. Born into a family whose wealth grew from the seedy world of big-time crime, he ran away as a teenager and made a home for himself on the streets of Detroit. By day, the mechanic works at a local garage. But by night, he throws down with the best of them in Detroit’s gritty underground fighting scene. With all those muscles, he’s never had trouble with women–until he meets one who challenges him to the greatest fight of his life. . .

Tamara Eliot is a hardworking corporate high-flyer who appreciates the finer things in life, from her expensive perfume to her designer handbags. More than anything, though, she likes to be in control–and when Zee explodes into her life, she feels anything but. He’s the definition of a bad boy: brash, fiery, and of course, irresistibly hot. And there’s a darkness about him that keeps her coming back for more. As Zee takes Tamara deeper into a world she never knew existed, she just might prove to be the one opponent he won’t be able to dominate–at least not without some pleasurable convincing . . .

  • Apples Should Be Red

Apples Should Be Red by Penny Watson

Apples Should Be Red by Penny Watson is a Thanksgiving-set novella, and it’s 99c. This story has a 3.9-star average on Goodreads. It features a couple who are older than the protagonists we most often read about (62 and 59), and readers who reviewed it said they laughed themselves silly.

    Recipe for Thanksgiving Dinner:

Start with 62-year old politically incorrect, chain-smoking, hard-cussing curmudgeon.

    Add 59-year old sexually-repressed know-it-all in pearls.

Throw in a beer can-turkey, a battle for horticultural supremacy, and nudist next-door neighbor.

Serve on paper plates, garnished with garden gnome.

    Tastes like happily ever after.

  • A Talent for Trickery

A Talent for Trickery by Alissa Johnson

RECOMMENDEDA Talent for Trickery by Alissa Johnson is $2.67 at Amazon! I did a mulled wine recipe for this book as part of Covers & Cocktails. Carrie also reviewed it, giving it an A grade:

I liked the action and the mystery and above all I loved that Lottie’s super power is that she’s super smart and super practical. This book was funny and touching and has stayed in my head since I finished it. Now I just have to figure out how to make time for all the author’s other books. Sleep is overrated, right?

    The Lady is a Thief

Years ago, Owen Renderwell earned acclaim-and a title-for the dashing rescue of a kidnapped duchess. But only a select few knew that Scotland Yard’s most famous detective was working alongside London’s most infamous thief…and his criminally brilliant daughter, Charlotte Walker.

Lottie was like no other woman in Victorian England. She challenged him. She dazzled him. She questioned everything he believed and everything he was, and he has never wanted anyone more. And then he lost her.

Now a private detective on the trail of a murderer, Owen has stormed back into Lottie’s life. She knows that no matter what they may pretend, he will always be a man of the law and she a criminal. Yet whenever he’s near, Owen has a way of making things complicated…and long for a future that can never be theirs.

  1. Liz says:

This doesn’t have to do with any of the deals here, but I know people here were upset about it – it looks like Amazon allows sorting wish lists by price again!

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Iirc, the only cheating in DIRTY FOR ME is on the part of the heroine’s fiancé. I love Jackie Ashenden, but this series is gritty with some pretty rough (but consensual) sex.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I should qualify: the heroine in DIRTY FOR ME doesn’t want to be engaged (her parents have arranged the marriage for her); she and her fiancé have both agreed to give each other “space” until the wedding. I know, I know, but just go with it. It works in the context of the book.

  4. CelineB says:

Thanks, Liz! It looks like mine will only let me do it on my app not on the full website yet, but that’s still great.

  5. KellyM says:

I was able sort and purge my list on the full website. Thanks for the heads up Liz.

  6. LML says:

Apples Should Be Read has appeared a few times here and I bought it. I suppose I’m in the minority, but I didn’t care for it at all. I didn’t find the characters “likable” and kicked it out of my kindle app.

  7. Rose says:

    Woohoo! Thanks, Liz!

  8. Deborah says:

Blood & Thunder, the second volume in Charlie Cochet’s Thirds series, is currently FREE on Amazon.

The first volume is 99c or available via Kindle Unlimited. Most of the 9 volumes have experienced a price drop in anticipation of the release of the tenth volume.

The series is m/m fantasy action romance, in which there’s a sciencey explanation for the existence of animal shifters (of many different species) in our world, along with a great deal of shifter bias because frankly it’s scary to get into a fight with someone who can transform into a bear or a lion. The protagonists are members of a gov’t-run shifter militia. I read the first volume via KU and found the protagonist a bit silly for my taste. Yet I just one-clicked the freebie because free…and I want to get to volume 5 eventually.

  9. @Liz, thank you for alerting me to this- I have been so used to doing a CTRL+F on dropped, I didn’t even notice. I have stepped out of the dark into the light… yet in my heart, I will forever live in fear that the light will be taken away again. Damn you, Jeff Bezos & your capricious sorting whims!!

  10. k8899 says:

@LML I haven’t read the book, but the characters sound unlikable from the description.

  11. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

Dirty for Me is down to $0.99. I’ll give it a go for that price.

  12. Katie C. says:

Hmmm, I just updated to the latest version of the Amazon app and I still cannot sort by price – I will check on my laptop later tonight, but this is frustrating – I loved the sort by price feature.
