Smart Bitches 2017 Gift Guide, Volume 3

Blue gift box with silver ribbon on white background. It’s shopping time, once again! I get so excited to write the gift guides each week, in part because I get to shop for everyone and share links and talk about things I think you’ll really like. And then you comment and email me lots more ideas and it’s just wonderful. So thank you.

Ready for round three of our annual gift guide?

Last week we talked about items that bring comfort and warmth, and prior to that  we were all about advent calendars. This week?

Candles!

I confess, until very recently, I was not into candles. I had small children, and I had not-entirely-smart cats who like to stick their faces into things, and I didn’t have safe places to keep a candle, much less a lit one. Even though you’re not supposed to blow out sabbath candles or Hanukkah candles, I did so regularly because…see above re: cats, children, and safety concerns.

But now that we’ve moved, in my house here I have a windowsill above the sink that’s deep enough for small pots but not deep enough for cat butt (they have tried and failed and don’t like being wet). And all the humans are older and wiser, at least somewhat (speaking for myself, there).

I have a small candle there that I light when I start cooking, a Market Spice Travel candle that smells like the Pike Place Market Spice tea, all orange and cinnamon. It’s lovely and makes the first floor smell wonderful – there’s a lot of scent in that little candle.

There are several sizes of the Market Spice scent, in case you want larger, more assertive Market Spiciness in your candle selection:

As I said, I never quite got the enthusiasm or fascination with candles, but having a small candle lit in my kitchen in the evening, especially now that the sun is going down earlier and earlier, looks beautiful and smells even better.

So when I asked for candle recommendations, boy howdy, did you deliver!

First, there’s a store in Shadyside, Pittsburgh, that I follow on Instagram, Lily & Val (I so very much want to visit the store the next time I travel back to my hometown), and they stock a candle from a Pennsylvania company called Candelle…and I really want, like, all of them.

Lily & Val have limited edition holiday options from Candelle, like Cozy Winter Vibes, which are my exact favorite kind of vibe, to be honest. The scent is a mix of “fresh orange slices with clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg,” and I’m entirely here for all of those fragrances. (In fact, when we were trying to sell our house, we got an offer after I boiled orange bits, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and bits of nutmeg and ginger on the stove for an hour before the house was open. I called it “Sell Your House Tea.”)

Another Candelle scent that I covet: Favorite Sweater, which promises the “comfy cozy sweater, smelling the fresh out of the dryer linen smell.”

They also have adorable pun candles, including I Like You a Waffle Lot, which smells like…yes, waffles ($16) and I Donut Know What I’d Do Without You, also $16.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention RedHeadedGirl’s review of the Yankee Candle scent “Mountain Lodge,” which smells, according to legend, like Chris Evans looks.

Katie wrote in to recommend Frostbeard Studiowhich has candles AND a throughly delightful name: “They are local to me (based in Minneapolis), their candles are always book-themed, and they smell amazing.”

Frostbeard candles in Headmaster's Office, Old Books, Oxford Library, and Rainy Day Reads scents

Headmaster’s Office, Old Books, Oxford Library, and Rainy Day Reads candles (and others), $18.

Katie said “book-themed,” didn’t she.

Wilbur approves of book themed candles and asks why you don’t buy some more?

Amanda seconded Katie’s recommendation of Frostbeard, and also recommended Wick & Fable, who have great themed candles and gorgeous packaging for your gifting needs, too: “I bought some of their Wintersong candles.”

Wick & Fable also has candles inspired by Six of CrowsPride & Prejudice, and a whole selection of candles inspired by Sarah J. Maas’ books, too. My favorite: Bookstagram, the Candle!

Bookstagram

All the Wick & Fable candles are $6-18.

Claire says, ” I was reading the most recent post where you asked for candle suggestions, and fortuitously I was burning my current favorite, Burning Books by Hearth & Hammer.”

Burning Books Candle, $18.

“Thankfully this candle smells much better than burning actual books – it’s cinnamon, orange, and fir, so it’s a good fall/holiday/winter scent.”

Claire also recommends her favorite, “summer candle scent…usually Volcano by Capri Blue. Fruity and spicy citrusy, which I much prefer to floral scents.”

Capri Blue Volcano Candle, $26.

Linda says, “I LOVE the candles from Sihaya Designs.”

“My very favorite is her “Memory of Snow” ($12), as it makes me think of the perfect day in – a book, a warm blanket, and the fireplace going with a pie in the oven (and the kitchen magically cleaned up after ;p).”

Sihaya also has candles inspired by the Tudor queens, and I’m very curious about “Sisterhood of the Moon,” which is $12, and contains scents of “amber, crackling fires, woody oakmoss, and warm vanilla.”

If bookish candles have you making a list and extending it twice, here are some more lit and literary temptations!

Antique Books scent from Werther and Grays jar candle

Antique Books scent from Wether and Grey, $11 and up, contains scents of paper, vanilla, and leather.

Burn Candle Company has a Barrel-Aged Whiskey Candle, which starts at $9:

Their Fraser Fir and Oak Moss scent is also tempting my olfactory curiosity ($9 and up).

Colonial Candles bayberry scent. My enduring (for decades) favorite.

  2. Ariadna says:

As soon as I saw what this post was about, I had to scroll and make sure that YC’s Mountain Lodge would get a mention. 😉

  3. denise says:

I just finished my Market Spice candle. It is really good. I just discovered Candelle’s on IG.

For my birthday, my friend bought me some book-themed candles in a jar by From the Page–based in New York Soy-based and hand poured. She gave me 221B Baker Street (black current tea &leather books–slightly masculine, but I love it), Thornfield Garden (rose & rain water–reminds me of a retired scent from Yankee, strong rose scent), and Pemberley (English Garden & Ivy–my personal favorite of the three). 12oz.

  4. SB Sarah says:

Oh, the Pemberley candle sounds wonderful.

  5. Lostshadows says:

Sadly, my current favorite candle scent was a YC Halloween one, Haunted Hollow. (I was looking for woodsy, but not piney.)

  6. Kate says:

My all-time favorite candle is Diptyque John Galliano (wood, frankincense, musk) but I can’t afford it. Other faves are Bath & Body Works Winter (orange and evergreen), YC Sparkling Angel (evergreen, apple, berry, eucalyptus and wood) and Illume Woodfire (cedar, patch, vanilla).

  7. camilla says:

You all have to try Trapp. My favorite is Orange Vanilla, but they have holiday scents as well….
Also Paddywax library scents….Charles Dickens is my favorite!

  8. Maureen says:

I decided this year I am going to light more candles-I’m very into hygge and candles play a big part of setting the stage for that. I ordered some of the Frostbeard Studio ones-how could I pass up candles called Oxford Library and Winterfell?? I had no idea there were all these book themed candles-thanks so much for the links!

  9. Nancy C says:

My favorite candle scent is something along the lines of a wood fire burning in the fireplace. Over the years, I’ve purchased candles like this from both PartyLite and Pier 1, but those scents have long since been discontinued.

Does anyone know of a candle with this scent that I could buy online? I prefer it not to be muddied with sweet or piney scents.

    Many thanks!

  10. Marci says:

I too have cats that love to climb and knock things over. On purpose sometimes. So I decided to try those candle warmers and I love them. I have them in several rooms around my house plugged into timers. They’re set to run different times and scents throughout the day. Love it, especially in winter. I gave my family those as gifts last year along with a variety of candles.

  11. Crystal says:

Folks, I give you the Smell My Nuts candle by Our Own Candle Company. I bought it for my sister for Christmas. It’s a triple layer of banana nut bread, toasted coconut, and hazelnut. She loved it.

  12. Regina says:

I just need to say that the Mountain Lodge Candle review was how I found this website! I don’t remember why I was looking for candle reviews, but it popped up in a Google search and here I am. 🙂

  13. Lindsey says:

Scented candles are my favorite! Thanks so much for all these recs. The Candelles company is new to me. And that Mountain Lodge post (including all the comments) was epic.

  14. Cerulean says:

Reading at the Cafe scent from Frostbeard is amazing. One of my favorites ever!

“Coffee & Chocolate & Books! Indulge in one of the greatest trifectas of all time. This fragrance is the perfect way to pretend you’re lounging at the coffee shop when you’d rather snuggle up at home with your cat and current read.”

  15. ClaireC says:

@ Nancy C – it looks like the Burn Candle Company linked above has a “Burn Away: Holiday Bonfire” scent that might fit the bill? “Burn Away is the true essence of sitting by a cozy fire. Familiar and distinctive, this scent melds notes of smoke and wood into a warm union of clove, amber, sandalwood and patchouli. It even includes a natural wood wick for the crackle of a fire.”

I ordered the fabled Mountain Lodge candle … and USPS lost the package!!! I’ll definitely try again, and ship it to work this time, so I can share the joy of that review when the package arrives.

Just bought the Tortuga scent from Sihaya, and I’m betting it will smell much better than actual pirates did! Plus I know the name will amuse my PotC-loving husband.

  16. Kate says:

@camilla, I wish I could find the Paddywax library line near me. They make awesome candles!

  17. JennyOH says:

Frostbeard Studio makes smaller candles for $6, so I think I need all of them as gifts for my librarian coworkers.

I’d also love to see a guide to book/reading themed socks! We’re doing a sock exchange in my office this year instead of secret santa so I need something good.

  18. Amy says:

North Avenue Candles has a banned books collection. I recommend Clockwork Orange (orange/cloves) and Fahrenheit 451 (parchment/smoked pine).

And I’ll second (third?) the Paddywax literary series. We have Tolstoy burning right now.
