  • Bonfire

    Bonfire by Krysten Ritter

    Author: Krysten Ritter
Released: November 7, 2017 by Crown Archetype
    Genre:

It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all visible evidence of her small town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands.

But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town’s most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to Barrens’ biggest scandal from more than a decade ago involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends—just before Kaycee disappeared for good.

Abby knows the key to solving any case lies in the weak spots, the unanswered questions. But as Abby tries to find out what really happened to Kaycee, she unearths an even more disturbing secret—a ritual called “The Game,” which will threaten the reputations, and lives, of the community and risk exposing a darkness that may consume her.

With tantalizing twists, slow-burning suspense, and a remote, rural town of just five claustrophobic miles, Bonfire is a dark exploration of the question, can you ever outrun your past?

Elyse says: I’m very interested in Ritter’s literary debut.

  • Steal the Stars

Steal the Stars by Nat Cassidy

    Author: Nat Cassidy
Released: November 7, 2017 by Tor Books
    Genre:

Steal the Stars, a debut novel by Nat Cassidy, is based on the debut science fiction podcast from Tor Labs.

Dakota “Dak” Prentiss guards the biggest secret in the world.

They call it “Moss.” It’s your standard grey alien from innumerable abduction stories. It still sits at the controls of the spaceship it crash-landed eleven years ago. A secret military base was built around the crash site to study both Moss and the dangerous technology it brought to Earth.

The day Matt Salem joins her security team, Dak’s whole world changes.

It’s love at first sight—which is a problem, since they both signed ironclad contracts vowing not to fraternize with other military personnel. If they run, they’ll be hunted for what they know. Dak and Matt have only way to be together: do the impossible. Steal Moss and sell the secret of its existence.

And they can’t afford a single mistake.

Amanda says: It’s a book based on a podcast. So of course, now I have to listen to the podcast.

  • The City of Brass

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

    Author: S.A. Chakraborty
Released: November 14, 2017 by Harper Voyager
    Genre:
    Series: The Daevabad Trilogy #1

Step into The City of Brass, the spellbinding debut from S. A. Chakraborty—an imaginative alchemy of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and One Thousand and One Nights, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom rests in the hands of a clever and defiant young con artist with miraculous healing gifts

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass?a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for . . .

Amanda says: The heroine is described as “a con woman of unsurpassed talent” who inadvertently summons a powerful djinn.

  • Queen Victoria’s Matchmaking

Queen Victoria’s Matchmaking by Deborah Cadbury

    Author: Deborah Cadbury
Released: November 14, 2017 by PublicAffairs
    Genre:

A captivating exploration of the role in which Queen Victoria exerted the most international power and influence: as a matchmaking grandmother.

As her reign approached its sixth decade, Queen Victoria’s grandchildren numbered over thirty, and to maintain and increase British royal power, she was determined to maneuver them into a series of dynastic marriages with the royal houses of Europe.
Yet for all their apparent obedience, her grandchildren often had plans of their own, fueled by strong wills and romantic hearts. Victoria’s matchmaking plans were further complicated by the tumultuous international upheavals of the time: revolution and war were in the air, and kings and queens, princes and princesses were vulnerable targets.
Queen Victoria’s Matchmaking travels through the glittering, decadent palaces of Europe from London to Saint Petersburg, weaving in scandals, political machinations and family tensions to enthralling effect. It is at once an intimate portrait of a royal family and an examination of the conflict caused by the marriages the Queen arranged. At the heart of it all is Victoria herself: doting grandmother one moment, determined Queen Empress the next.

Redheadedgirl says: The tangled web of Victorias grandchildren and their marriages is FASCINATING.

  • Unscrewed

    Unscrewed by Jaclyn Friedman

    Author: Jaclyn Friedman
Released: November 14, 2017 by Seal Press
    Genre:

What bestselling authors like Sheryl Sandberg and Brigid Schulte have done for women’s work lives, Jaclyn Friedman does here for women’s sexuality: spark a culture-wide rethink about what’s accepted as normal, urging us all to try for something better. Not only that: she does it with warmth, irreverence, and candor reminiscent of Roxane Gay in Bad Feminist, and the fiery conviction of her own co-edited anthology Yes Means Yes!

In Unscrewed, Friedman reveals that the anxiety and fear women in our country feel around issues of their sexuality are not, in fact, their fault, but instead are side effects of our toxic culture. Dubbed the “era of fauxpowerment,” that culture gives women the illusion of sexual power, with no actual power to support it. Exploring where media, religion, politics, and education overlap with feminist issues, Unscrewed breaks down the causes and signs of fauxpowerment, then gives readers tools to take it on themselves.

Redheadedgirl says: Full disclosure: Jaclyn was my roommate and is one of my very good friends. Unscrewed explores the toxic culture that surrounds women and sexuality, and what we can do about it.

  • Hard Cover

    Hard Cover by Jamie Schmidt

    Author: Jamie Schmidt
Released: November 21, 2017 by Loveswept
    Genre: ,

He can read her like a book. But will he give her a happy ending?

Dawn: I’d do anything to keep my bookstore. It’s a safe place for all women, somewhere to let their freak flags fly. I call it sex-positive. The menfolk call it smut. That’s how I met Rory Parker, the local billionaire trying to shut me down on behalf of the “moral majority.” He walked in with an offer I couldn’t refuse . . . except I did. Now Rory wants to play dirty. Well, he picked the wrong bookseller. Let’s see how much support he still has after people get a load of the little movie I recorded of the two of us going at it like wild animals in my shop.

Rory: I could care less how Dawn Nolan makes her money. The only thing I care about is how much she’s making. Her bookstore isn’t the kind of upscale attraction my investors want in this sleepy little tourist trap, so it’s got to go. But when Dawn personally finds out how I treat bad girls who misbehave, she seems to enjoy it as much as I do. Now I just need to destroy the copies of that video she’s threatening to post—as soon as I stop watching it. The trouble is, when I’m with her, all I want to do is get started on the sequel.

Amanda says: The heroine owns a sex-positive bookstore!

  • Sweet Tea and Sympathy

Sweet Tea and Sympathy by Molly Harper

    Author: Molly Harper
Released: November 21, 2017 by Gallery Books
    Genre: ,
    Series: Southern Eclectic #1

Beloved author Molly Harper launches a brand new contemporary romance series, Southern Eclectic, with this story of a big-city party planner who finds true love in a small Georgia town.

Nestled on the shore of Lake Sackett, Georgia is the McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop. (What, you have a problem with one-stop shopping?) Two McCready brothers started two separate businesses in the same building back in 1928, and now it’s become one big family affair. And true to form in small Southern towns, family business becomes everybody’s business.

Margot Cary has spent her life immersed in everything Lake Sackett is not. As an elite event planner, Margot’s rubbed elbows with the cream of Chicago society, and made elegance and glamour her business. She’s riding high until one event goes tragically, spectacularly wrong. Now she’s blackballed by the gala set and in dire need of a fresh start—and apparently the McCreadys are in need of an event planner with a tarnished reputation.

As Margot finds her footing in a town where everybody knows not only your name, but what you had for dinner last Saturday night and what you’ll wear to church on Sunday morning, she grudgingly has to admit that there are some things Lake Sackett does better than Chicago—including the dating prospects. Elementary school principal Kyle Archer is a fellow fish-out-of-water who volunteers to show Margot the picture-postcard side of Southern living. The two of them hit it off, but not everybody is happy to see an outsider snapping up one of the town’s most eligible gentleman. Will Margot reel in her handsome fish, or will she have to release her latest catch?

Amanda says: This is giving me some heavy Sweet Home Alabama vibes and I love that movie so much.

The Civil War has turned neighbor against neighbor–but for one scientist spy and her philosopher soldier, war could bind them together . . .

For three years of the War Between the States, Marlie Lynch has helped the cause in peace: with coded letters about anti-Rebel uprisings in her Carolina woods, tisanes and poultices for Union prisoners, and silent aid to fleeing slave and Freeman alike. Her formerly enslaved mother’s traditions and the name of a white father she never knew have protected her–until the vicious Confederate Home Guard claims Marlie’s home for their new base of operations in the guerilla war against Southern resistors of the Rebel cause.

Unbeknowst to those under her roof, escaped prisoner Ewan McCall is sheltering in her laboratory. Seemingly a quiet philosopher, Ewan has his own history with the cruel captain of the Home Guard, and a thoughtful but unbending strength Marlie finds irresistible.

When the revelation of a stunning family secret places Marlie’s freedom on the line, she and Ewan have to run for their lives into the hostile Carolina night. Following the path of the Underground Railroad, they find themselves caught up in a vicious battle that could dash their hopes of love–and freedom–before they ever cross state lines.

Sarah says: It’s going to be terrific, and I cannot wait to read it.

Redheadedgirl says: GIVE IT TO ME RIGHT NOW PLEASE!

  1. Scene Stealer says:

Maureen Smith’s follow up to “Wicked Games” is due out any day. “The Swede” is two years in the making. I can’t wait to read it.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Looking forward to the next installment of Jackie Ashenden’s Billionaire Fairy Tales Series, THE BIG BAD BILLIONAIRE (based on Little Red Riding Hood). I had jotted down that it was scheduled for release November 3; was really bummed when I double-checked and saw the publication date is November 21. Oh well, that will give me something to read over Thanksgiving.

  3. cleo says:

I’m soooo looking forward to Santino Hassell’s Citywide. It’s book 5.5 in his Five Burroughs series. Not at all standalone. I haven’t been this obsessed with a series and a new book in a long time.

  4. Ren Benton says:

Is it just my disdain for “love” at first sight that makes “the only solution is to steal the alien from the military and sell the secret of its existence” seem like a less-good idea than keeping it in your pants? (“It” being pants feelings, not the alien. Keeping an alien in your pants would be a whole other story, with a premise I’d be more likely to buy.) As is, it sounds like I’d be rooting for the military rather than the horny, thieving, greedy (can’t just GIVE AWAY the secret, have to SELL it?) oath-breakers.

Closely followed by blackmailing somebody with a sex tape… Look, I’m a fan of anti-heroes, but there’s a cutoff to the acceptable level of scummy behavior I can get on board with.

Swindling Ottoman nobles, for instance, is fine. Wish-listed City of Brass.

  5. SusanH says:

I’m also really bothered by the sex tape blackmail plotline. Filming someone without their knowledge or consent isn’t “sex positive”, it’s horrible. Threatening to release it without their permission is unforgivable.

  6. MirandaB says:

@Ren, it looks like the heroine is the one doing the blackmailing with the sex tape (which doesn’t make it any better).

Plus, in this day of Amazon/online mail order, I have to wonder how an independent sex-bookstore is going to stay in business anyhow.

  7. Gigi says:

Loretta Chase’s A Duke in Shining Armor. A rakish duke, a bespectacled runaway bride…I have never anticipated anything more.

  8. Ren Benton says:

@MirandaB: Yeah, I just didn’t know if anti-heroine was a thing. And if it is, it shouldn’t be “a woman acting like a shitty dude” any more than an anti-hero should be “a shitty dude.” Especially in a ROMANCE. How badly can people treat each other and plausibly get to happily ever after? Lately I’ve been wondering if the next “edgy” thing will be HEA with domestic violence because people have lost their damn minds.

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Ren & Miranda: I posted in last month’s What Are You Reading about Jill Sorenson’s RIDING DIRTY: a really well-written book that went off the rails in a scene where the hero sexually assaults the heroine because he thinks she has betrayed him (she has, in part, but to me that’s irrelevant). Worse—the heroine feels that she “deserves” to be punished that way! The hero is eventually contrite, but I was left feeling baffled. Such an off-putting scene in an otherwise good book.

  10. JayneH says:

    November pre-orders for me are
Complicated by Kristen Ashley (Previously released as Audiobook only).
The Negotiator (Christmas Novella) by HelenKay Dimon

  11. LauraL says:

I’ll have to see if my Southern, small-town library has ordered Sweet Tea and Sympathy. I’m thinking heck yeah.

Love Mary Balogh and Someone to Wed looks like a good read, especially with a scarred heroine. A Hope Divided has been on my radar since I first heard of it here.

I have The Lord Meets His Lady by Gina Conkle pre-ordered. I have enjoyed her Midnight Meetings series so far. Midnight kisses and then the banter! This one has a second son hero. Not a Duke….

  12. MirandaB says:

    @DiscoDolly: AGH!

I don’t want a book with sex scenes that make me want to get the heroine in touch with a domestic violence shelter.

That’s what ultimately turned me off the J.D. Robb books: I never liked Roarke, but I could manage until one of the sex scenes between Roarke and Eve was angry and verging on non-consensual. Nope.

  13. Zyva says:

Too Soon – on the real life drama, not comedy, scale – for the Aussie Anglican to be heroic.

Give us a bit longer to get overcome the yuck factor of the Anglican archbishop of Sydney putting a mil into the anti marriage equality campaign.

  14. DonnaMarie says:

I’m so excited for the new Andy Weir, I’m practically doing a pee-pee dance!

Also having grabby hands for the Alisha Rai. Thanks for the thumbs up RHG.

Also on this month’s snatch it up list is Rules of Magic a prequel to Practical Magic, one of my all time favorite books, by Alice Hoffman, as well as Nalini Singh’s latest rock star romance, Cherish Hard, and Molly O’Keefe’s Ruin You.

  15. MClaudia says:

I already preordered the new Mary Balogh and pondering preordering the new Alyssa Cole — sounds very interesting and bonus points for being set in NC where I used to live.

  16. denise says:

I read The Bride Who Got Lucky and loved it!

  17. Ariadna says:

This is something of a low key month for me. I mean, aside from BONFIRE and A HOPE DIVIDED, the only books I’ve bought (pre-ordered even) we’re:

    * CITYWIDE by Santino Hassell. It’s a novella anthology featuring characters from his Five Boroughs series (M/M/M, F/F, M/F)

    * WHEELS UP by Annabeth Albert. The 4th book in her military Rance series. The blurb for it had me *___* but I’ve seen a few so-so reviews so I’ve adjusted my expectations. (M/M)

    * TAKING MAC by Kris Ripper. The 3rd book in zir Sex Gym series. The books are about a guy named Mac who starts doing sex work. I love how Ripper writes a premise that can (occasionally) be super clichéd and homophobic. (Um, it can be M/M, but due to the type of work Mac does, there are other kinds of pairings.)

  18. Ariadna says:

And, obvs, I meant were and not we’re. Ughhhhhhhh, autocorrect!

  19. Carol Sorensen says:

Can’t wait for the Queen Victoria matchmaking book – my husband is a history buff too and I’ve read oh, 5 bios of just Queen Victoria plus tons of others so we had a delightful evening out where I got to tell him how WWI is a family quarrel and the whole Nicholas and Alexandra mess.

  20. Hazel says:

That Alyssa Cole cover is very pretty, isn’t it?

  21. Sarah says:

Yessss I was looking for Balogh! I’ve only read the first in the series so far, as I’m trying to finish up the Survivor series. I’m lagging behind. I have Someone to Hold on my buy list so I’ll probably wait til I’ve at least started that before I buy this one… but I’m waiting!!

  22. KateB says:

I have put on hold at my library: A HOPE DIVIDED, INTO THE DROWNING DEEP, and THE HOUSE ON FOSTER HILL, because, as a fellow Wisconsinite, it’s basically required.

  23. SusanH says:

@DonnaMarie, I’m halfway through Rules of Magic and really liking it so far!

  24. Kareni says:

I was already looking forward to the new Mary Balogh book as well as the one by Andy Weir. Now I’ve added a few more to my list. Thank you, I think.

  25. SandyCo says:

I’m also looking forward to “Citywide” by Santino Hassell and “Wheels Up” by Annabeth Albert. Both authors are auto buys. 🙂

  26. […] releases: Tor.com (scifi, fantasy) and Smart Bitches […]

  27. Liz says:

Elizabeth Hunter’s latest book, with Ben and Tenzin as the protagonists, comes out on 11/7 – I have been waiting for the book for ages it seems.

  28. Michelle says:

    @MirandaB

Someone else who doesn’t like Roarke! I’ve felt so alone!

  29. Also released on Nov. 1 was Spring Flowering by Farah Mendlesohn, which looks to be the best f/f Regency romance I have ever encountered. (I’m only in chapter 5, but it would pretty much have to jump off a cliff to fail my expectations.) Mendlesohn is best known for her award-winning critical studies of science fiction and fantasy–this is her first foray into fiction. She is thoroughly steeped in both the social history and literary context of her setting. (The moment I laid eyes on the pre-release announcement for the book, I jumped at the chance to line her up for an author interview on the Lesbian Historic Motif Podcast this month.)
