  • Vicious

    Vicious by V. E. Schwab

RECOMMENDED: Vicious by V.E. Schwab is $2.99! Though I have not read this, several of my friends (four to be exact, two of whom have rated it five starts on Goodreads) have and absolutely loved it. With rivalries, super powers, and experiments gone wrong, I’ve heard Vicious compared to being a literary comic book. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

  • Listen to Me

Listen to Me by Kristen Proby

Listen to Me by Kristen Proby is $1.99! Both Sarah and I picked it as part of April’s Hide Your Wallet post. Readers recommend this if you want something sexy, but easy on the angst. However, some expressed difficulty maintaining their interest. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart.

Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy…exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need.

Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him.

Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?

  • Irresistible You

    Irresistible You by Kate Meader

Irresistible You by Kate Meader is 99c! This is the first book in a brand new sports romance series! Readers really loved the banter between the hero and heroine, though others mentioned it took a while to warm up to the hero. Have you read this one?

Hot in Chicago series author Kate Meader returns with her all new, scorching Chicago Rebels hockey series, featuring her signature “steamy sex scenes, colorful characters, and riveting dialogue” (Romantic Times). Three estranged sisters inherit their late father’s failing hockey franchise and are forced to confront a man’s world, their family’s demons, and the battle-hardened ice warriors skating into their hearts.

Harper Chase has just become the most powerful woman in the NHL after the death of her father Clifford Chase, maverick owner of the Chicago Rebels. But the team is a hot mess—underfunded, overweight, and close to tapping out of the league. Hell-bent on turning the luckless franchise around, Harper won’t let anything stand in her way. Not her gender, not her sisters, and especially not a veteran player with an attitude problem, a chip on his shoulder, and a smoldering gaze designed to melt her ice-compacted defenses.

Veteran center Remy “Jinx” DuPre is on the downside of a career that’s seen him win big sponsorships, fans’ hearts, and more than a few notches on his stick. Only one goal has eluded him: the Stanley Cup. Sure, he’s been labeled as the unluckiest guy in the league, but with his recent streak of good play, he knows this is his year. So why the hell is he being shunted off to a failing hockey franchise run by a ball-buster in heels? And is she seriously expecting him to lead her band of misfit losers to a coveted spot in the playoffs?

He’d have a better chance of leading Harper on a merry skate to his bed…

  • Till Death

    Till Death by Jennifer Armentrout

Till Death by Jennifer L. Armentrout is $1.99! This romantic suspense was mentioned by Elyse in February’s Hide Your Wallet because she says she’s a sucker for a serial killer plot. Readers say it’s gritty and emotional, but admit the mystery and “twist” wasn’t terribly suspenseful.

In New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s gripping new novel, a young woman comes home to reclaim her life—even as a murderer plots to end it. . .

It’s been ten years since Sasha Keaton left her West Virginia hometown . . . since she escaped the twisted serial killer known as the Groom. Returning to help run her family inn means being whole again, except for one missing piece. The piece that falls into place when Sasha’s threatened—and FBI agent Cole Landis vows to protect her the way he couldn’t a decade ago.

First one woman disappears; then another, and all the while, disturbing calling cards are left for the sole survivor of the Groom’s reign of terror. Cole’s never forgiven himself for not being there when Sasha was taken, but he intends to make up for it now . . . because under the quirky sexiness Cole first fell for is a steely strength that only makes him love Sasha more.

But someone is watching. Waiting. And Sasha’s first mistake could be her last.

  2. @Amanda says:

    @Cat: Whoops, fixed!

  3. Notorious says:

I read Vicious, and I’ll admit I don’t know what everyone is smoking to like it so much. Please pass the toke.

IMHO, the story didn’t do anything interesting with the superhero genre except make the main character a psychopathic a-hole (and then expect you to root for him), then drag through 75 chapters (!!!) of boring and ultimately irrelevant backstory to get to an anticlimactic ending. Why so much love for this book? Why???

For a much better entry of the shaking-up-the-superheroes genre (IMHO) check out Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoners series instead. WAY better.

  4. Deborah says:

The first two books in Lisa Kleypas’s Hathaways series — Mine Till Midnight and Seduce Me At Sunrise — are 2.99 each at Amazon. (They’re not listed at ereaderiq, so I can’t tell if they’ve been priced this low for weeks, or yay!sale. I can tell you I wish I had only paid 2.99 for them and that I loved the last three books in the series. Also, I guess I’m a Devil in Winter fangirl, because I would pay 2.99 for the bit in Mine Till Midnight with Sebastian and his baby daughter, Phoebe.)

  5. KateB says:

There’s a “box set” of four of Shelly Laurensten’s “Beast” books on sale for $2.99.

And, a “box set” of Deanna Raybourn’s Julia Grey Trilogy on sale for $4.99.

  6. Lena says:

I devoured Irresistible You and I loved it! I’m eagerly waiting for So Over You to come out on Monday! it’s a steamy book, with great banter and I actually loved the hero from beginning to end. Him and his family are endearing 🙂

  7. Katie Lynn says:

I loved Irresistable You, picked it up the week week it was published it was great. I think I read the whole thing in one sitting, which kept me up till the wee hours.

  8. Maureen says:

Add me to the list that is super excited for the next Kate Meader! I’m not a hockey fan, but I love books about hockey players-not sure what is up with that! I loved the relationship between the sisters in the first book-I thought that added a lot of depth.

  9. Amy E. says:

I enjoyed Vicious, but, to each their own. 😉
