September Movie Selection: Roman Holiday (1953)

Our September Smart Bitches Movie Matinee is the black-and-white classic with Audrey Hepburn, Roman Holiday!

I love this movie, even though there has been some debate whether it’s a “proper” romance. I do know there’s a bunch of fanfic adding another chapter to the story.

Many people have probably seen this one, but if you haven’t, or you need a refresher, here’s the plot synopsis:

Overwhelmed by her suffocating schedule, touring European princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) takes off for a night while in Rome. When a sedative she took from her doctor kicks in, however, she falls asleep on a park bench and is found by an American reporter, Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who takes her back to his apartment for safety. At work the next morning, Joe finds out Ann’s regal identity and bets his editor he can get exclusive interview with her, but romance soon gets in the way.

Roman Holiday is available for streaming on PassionFlix. You can also find it for around $3-4 to rent and $10-15 to buy digitally on iTunes, Google:Play, and Amazon, and the DVD can be found at your local library, or cheaply online in new and used condition from Amazon or Alibris.

There is so much to discuss with this film: the setting! The story! The chemistry between Peck and Hepburn! And her haircut. I love this movie and can’t wait to watch it again.

We’ll be discussing the film on Sunday, September 24. Hope you can join us!

This is the first Audrey Hepburn movie I saw. Weirdly, I didn’t remember Gregory Peck having been in it until several years later. I think there was going to be a movie sequel which never happened.
