Shifters, Lesbian Romance, & More!

  • Under the Lights

Under the Lights by Dahlia Adler

Under the Lights by Dahlia Adler is $1.99 at Amazon! Fingers crossed for some price-matching. This is a YA/NA lesbian romance and Sarah gave it a B:

In terms of what age group this book is for, it’s tagged as both YA and New Adult. The characters are over 18, but under 21, and there is one on-the-page sex scene, should you be wondering if this book is suitable for a reader you know.

I found this book very easy to get into once I picked it up, and very difficult to put down. My interest waned every time Josh narrated a chapter, but at the end of each of Josh’s chapters there was more of Vanessa, and so I kept going.

Josh Chester loves being a Hollywood bad boy, coasting on his good looks, his parties, his parents’ wealth, and the occasional modeling gig. But his laid-back lifestyle is about to change. To help out his best friend, Liam, he joins his hit teen TV show, Daylight Falls…opposite Vanessa Park, the one actor immune to his charms. (Not that he’s trying to charm her, of course.) Meanwhile, his drama-queen mother blackmails him into a new family reality TV show, with Josh in the starring role. Now that he’s in the spotlight—on everyone’s terms but his own—Josh has to decide whether a life as a superstar is the one he really wants.

Vanessa Park has always been certain about her path as an actor, despite her parents’ disapproval. But with all her relationships currently in upheaval, she’s painfully uncertain about everything else. When she meets her new career handler, Brianna, Van is relieved to have found someone she can rely on, now that her BFF, Ally, is at college across the country. But as feelings unexpectedly evolve beyond friendship, Van’s life reaches a whole new level of confusing. And she’ll have to choose between the one thing she’s always loved…and the person she never imagined she could.

  • Shadowshaper

    Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older

RECOMMENDED: Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this YA fantasy and gave it a B:

But when I was reading this book, I couldn’t put it down, and I devoured it in one afternoon. I found myself re-reading parts when I went to check my notes and highlights for this review, a sign that a re-read might be required.  Despite my disappointment with the construction of the fantasy elements, the rest of the book, especially the characters, the language, the use of food (do NOT read this while hungry, y’all), the depth and complexity of the cultures within Sierra’s world and all the dialogue (all of it. It’s so good.) make this story very, very much worth reading.

Sierra Santiago was looking forward to a fun summer of making art, hanging out with her friends, and skating around Brooklyn. But then a weird zombie guy crashes the first party of the season. Sierra’s near-comatose abuelo begins to say “No importa” over and over. And when the graffiti murals in Bed-Stuy start to weep…. Well, something stranger than the usual New York mayhem is going on.

Sierra soon discovers a supernatural order called the Shadowshapers, who connect with spirits via paintings, music, and stories. Her grandfather once shared the order’s secrets with an anthropologist, Dr. Jonathan Wick, who turned the Caribbean magic to his own foul ends. Now Wick wants to become the ultimate Shadowshaper by killing all the others, one by one. With the help of her friends and the hot graffiti artist Robbie, Sierra must dodge Wick’s supernatural creations, harness her own Shadowshaping abilities, and save her family’s past, present, and future.

  • The Golem and the Jinni

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

RECOMMENDED: The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker is $1.99! This is a fantasy historical and reader favorite.  Carrie reviewed this book in June 2013 and really liked it. She says it doesn’t have romance as its primary plot, but it’s a beautiful read:

I loved this book, but not so much for the love story. I loved the mythologies, the settings, and the characters. The neighborhoods were incredibly detailed and vivid and interesting. The cultural and religious communities felt real and fascinating. I love books that let me see into another world, and this book gave me that feeling many times.  The characters were all mesmerizing. I felt like I was in each setting, meeting these real people.

Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Struggling to make their way in 1899 New York, the Golem and the Jinni try to fit in with their immigrant neighbors while masking their true selves. Meeting by chance, they become unlikely friends whose tenuous attachment challenges their opposing natures, until the night a terrifying incident drives them back into their separate worlds. But a powerful menace will soon bring the Golem and the Jinni together again, threatening their existence and forcing them to make a fateful choice.

Marvelous and compulsively readable, The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of folk mythology, historical fiction, and magical fable into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale.

  • Sworn to the Wolf

Sworn to the Wolf by Lauren Dane

Sworn to the Wolf by Lauren Dane is $1.99! This is the second book in the Cherchez Wolf Pack series and features a fated mates element. Some readers felt there was definitely an element of insta-lust, while others really enjoyed the intense chemistry the main characters had. Have you read this one?

Rain left her old life to find a fresh start. But a wolf shifter mate wasn’t exactly what she was expecting…

A new name, a new job, a new life—far from the dangers of her old one.

Then Laurent walked into her restaurant and changed everything.

The second-in-command for the Cherchez Wolf Pack, Laurent didn’t expect to find his destiny in a roadside café. But there’s no doubt in his mind that waitress-by-day, artist-by-night Rain is his mate. And the urge to be near her, to protect her, to have her is intoxicating.

An unbelievably hot night leaves them both wanting more. But more with Laurent comes with an introduction to his extended family—of werewolves. Learning that supernatural beings are real is a shock, but becoming one turns out to be the best decision she’s made in her new life.

No matter how good things are with Laurent and the pack, Rain can’t run from her old life forever. When a threat on the horizon tests the life they’re building together, Rain will have to prove that her place is with the Cherchez wolves—no matter who says otherwise.

  1. Varian says:

The Golem and the Jinni is amazing. It’s been a couple years since I read it, but I remember loving it.

  2. KellyM says:

Sworn to the Wolf was previously titled Fire and Rain before Ms. Dane escaped from EC (Yay!). I read it many years ago and gave it 3 stars. Of course with my reader’s amnesia I don’t remember anything about it.

  3. DianeV says:

The description for “Sworn to the Wold” actually belongs to book 1 ‘Wolf’s Ascension”. The main characters in “Sworn to the Wolf’ are Rain and Laurant.

  4. Susan says:

@KellyM: Reader’s Amnesia! Thank you! There’s a name for what I have and I’m totally using it.

  5. chacha1 says:

“The Golem and the Jinni” is SO GOOD. And “Shadowshaper” is on my wishlist, so must go click it!

  6. Emily C says:

Huge second for The Golem and the Jinni. Light on romance, although it kind of sneaks up on you, but as an American historical novel with supernatural elements it was one of my favorite reads of the last few years. Truly imaginative and pulled me right into the New York City world she built.

  7. Amanda says:

@DianeV: Fixed, thank you! It seems that one of the editions on Goodreads has the wrong description.

  8. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who still regularly reads paranormals… They are just such a comfort read for me and the ONLY subgenre where I’m down with insta-love. This Lauren Dane is a one-click for me 🙂

Also, this is your regularly scheduled reminder that there’s still not a price sort available for Amazon wish lists which sucks balls. Carry on

  9. DonnaMarie says:

    @Mara, you are not alone!

  10. Cat says:

There is still price sort (and price drop filter) if you use the Amazon app on a Kindle Fire tablet.

    🙂

  11. Cat says:

Adding: it makes you then go into the Kindle store app to buy the books, but at least you can find them.

  12. Candace says:

Loved the Golem and the Jinni. It had romantic elements, but I read first and foremost as a beautiful, sweeping tribute the immigrants and their contribution to the personality of New York City. I was moved to tears by this book, something that doesn’t happen often.

  13. @Cat, good to know! Alas, I don’t have a fire tablet, so that won’t work for me… my hack is to do CTRL + F on the word “dropped,” but I miss my price sort literally every day

  14. Jennifer says:

I have The Golem and the Jinni in my TBR – after reading the comments I will have to move it further to the front of the pile

  15. Gloriamarie says:

The Golem and the Jinni Do yourself a favor and read this brilliantly written book. I wish I could give it ten stars.
