Sleeping Giants

RECOMMENDED: Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel is $1.99! I think this is a Kindle Daily Deal left over from yesterday, so get the sale before it changes! It’s a scifi novel with a female protagonist. Readers say that though this scifi is a little darker and less “feel good,” the loved it. However, some felt a bulk of the book was just setup and information dumping for the next book. Both Elyse & I loved it and I highly recommend the audio.
Sleeping Giants is a thriller fueled by an earthshaking mystery—and a fight to control a gargantuan power.
A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved—its origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Its carbon dating defies belief; military reports are redacted; theories are floated, then rejected.
But some can never stop searching for answers.
Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack the hand’s code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the provenance of the relic. What’s clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history’s most perplexing discovery—and figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result prove to be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?

Provocative by Lisa Renee Jones is 99c! This a romantic suspense novel and the first book in the White Lies Duet. Readers loved the sense of place in wine country! Hello! However, others wished there was more of plot. It has 4.3-rating on Goodreads.
Book one in the sexy and scintillating new White Lies duet by Lisa Renee Jones!
There are those moments in life that are provocative in their very existences, that embed in our minds forever, and sometimes our very souls. They change us, mold us, maybe even save us. But some are darker, dangerous. If we allow them to, they control us. Seduce us. Quite possibly even destroy us.
The moment I walked into Sonoma’s Reid Winter Winery and Vineyard and made eye contact with Faith Winter for the first time was one of those moments. Provocative because I know at least one of her secrets, of which, I suspect she has many. Provocative because she believes I was a stranger to her when we met, but I am not. Provocative because I sought her out, with no intention of touching her. But now I have. Now I want her. Now I have to have her. But that changes nothing. It doesn’t change why I came for her.

A Gentleman for All Seasons is 99c! This is anthology with stories by Shana Galen, Vanessa Kelly, Kate Noble, and Theresa Romain. There are grumpy heroes, an enemies to lovers romance, and second chances. Readers loved the variety in the romances and how they’re all connected. Have you read this one?
The tiny village of Hemshawe is the sort of place where nothing ever happens…until a handsome ex-soldier and his matchmaking sister let the imposing manor house at the edge of town. The friendly Londoners shake up the staid people of Hemshawe, and villagers see each other in a new and oh-so-appealing light.
Suddenly long-sparring enemies become lovers, a town festival heralds a new start for a fallen woman and a dandy, and a man who has given up on love gets a second chance with the woman he never forgot. And the matchmaker herself? She won’t rest until she finds her own happily-ever-after…
A Madness in Spring by Kate Noble
Adam Sturridge has made Belinda Leonard’s blood boil since childhood, and the feeling is mutual. But when a would-be matchmaker arrives in the village of Hemshawe, she’d determined to erase the thin line between love and hate. Now, Belinda and Adam are faced with falling for someone they’ve always considered an enemy — can they overcome old prejudices and discover how to rub each other the right way?
The Summer of Wine and Scandal by Shana Galen
When viscount’s son and dandy Peregrine Lochley is temporarily exiled from London to the country for his misdeeds, the last thing he expects is to encounter an intriguing woman. But Caroline Martin has a secret to hide, and it just might be too scandalous for even this debauched rogue.
Those Autumn Nights by Theresa Romain
Ten years ago, wealthy Eliza Greenleaf broke lowly soldier Bertram Gage’s heart—but the last decade brought changes in fortune to them both. Now that he’s made his mark on the world, a twist of fate brings the Greenleaf family under his power. Will this war-hardened officer triumph over his former lover…or will Bertie and Eliza give love a second chance?
The Season for Loving by Vanessa Kelly
Miss Georgie Gage, matchmaker extraordinaire, is resigned to life as a spinster—almost. When notoriously aloof bachelor Fergus Haddon arrives from Scotland to spend Christmas with the Gage family, Georgie thinks she’s finally found her own perfect match—if, that is, she can get the handsome Highlander to agree!

Split by J.B. Salsbury is $1.99! This is a dark contemporary romance that Elyse mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet, saying, “This really intrigues me–the hero has a violent split personality, sort of like Jekyll and Hyde. It could be great or awful…”
Given the premise of the story, this is a romance that clearly isn’t for everyone. However, if you’ve read it, drop your thoughts into the comments.
New York Times bestselling author J. B. Salsbury delivers a contemporary romance with a suspenseful twist. After her career goes sour, Shyann finds herself jobless, penniless, and packing for her hometown–where unwanted memories await.
Lucas needs the quiet life. And that’s exactly what he’s found in Payson, Arizona. For the first time in his life, he finally feels like his mind is in check. Lucas has suffered from blackouts since he was a child. He knows he’s not like other guys.
But when Lucas meets his boss’s daughter, her probing eyes and personal questions pick away at his barriers. Shyann is everything he should never have…everything he wants. And soon the blackouts return. The last thing he wants is to expose how dangerous he can be–but he’s helpless, and it could cost him Shyann.

The 1-star reviews for Split can probably determine yea or nay for most people: the hero’s dark side is violent toward the heroine and cheats on her, and she’s fine with both because looooove.
I have A Gentleman for All Seasons and did enjoy it enough that I have read it more than once.
I think A Gentleman for All Seasons is the first anthology I’ve encountered where I know (and love) every single author.
I read one JB Salsbury and I’m of the opinion that her books should not be categorized as romance not even dark romance. The one I read had horrific child abuse, drug addiction resulting in od that was magically cured by the hero’s magic peen. Not my idea of romance.
I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Sleeping Giants has a female protagonist. It’s got four primary characters, two of whom are women. Rose is just the first one to appear in the story. TBH, it’s a fairly different book than I expected based on the description – I thought Rose *was* going to be the protagonist, and so both the events of the story and the structure were surprising to me.
I’ll also say that I read it an enjoyed it but didn’t think it was that compelling – the way the story is told is more interesting than the story itself. Jack McDevitt’s “The Engines of God” is a better take on the “mysterious alien machines! what do they mean?” genre than Sleeping Giants (IMO). (The Engines of God definitely *does* have a female protagonist, FWIW.)
OT as I’m not referencing any of the above, but who cares?
Shelly Laurenston has a new book coming out March 27, 2018 available now for pre-order at $9.99 ($12.94 pb) titled “Hot and Badgered” from The Honey Badgers series. Seriously, a book featuring new characters from a new series I’ve never heard of even though I get her monthly author letter? Talk about stealth.
Here’s the description (per Amazon):
It’s not every day that a beautiful naked woman falls out of the sky and lands face-first on grizzly shifter Berg Dunn’s hotel balcony. Definitely they don’t usually hop up and demand his best gun. Berg gives the lady a grizzly-sized t-shirt and his cell phone, too, just on style points. And then she’s gone, taking his XXXL heart with her. By the time he figures out she’s a honey badger shifter, it’s too late.
Honey badgers are survivors. Brutal, vicious, ill-tempered survivors. Or maybe Charlie Taylor-MacKilligan is just pissed that her useless father is trying to get them all killed again, and won’t even tell her how. Protecting her little sisters has always been her job, and she’s not about to let some pesky giant grizzly protection specialist with a network of every shifter in Manhattan get in her way. Wait. He’s trying to help? Why would he want to do that? He’s cute enough that she just might let him tag along—that is, if he can keep up . . .
Since this series is titled The Honey Badgers, I’ve no idea who’s going to be in it, you know, besides HBs. However, it does mention that Berg is a ‘protection specialist with a network of every shifter in Manhattan’ so maybe we’ll get cameo appearances or more from other Pride members. Can’t wait to find out.

Being violent toward your partner is a hard no. Do not pass go. Do not collect $100. Love does not fix abusers, that’s an incredibly dangerous message to send. Anyone who has violent blackouts needs immediate psychiatric help, not the love of a good woman to get better. I’m actually a little tired of seeing love fix everything in romance. Yes, damaged people deserve love but even better would be love plus a good therapist.
@kitkat
Shelly mentioned the new Honey Badger series in her newsletter, back when she first signed the deal with Kensington. Sometime last fall? Not many details, as is normal with Shelly, when she’s still writing. At the time she said it’s a 3-book deal, following three sister honey badgers who share the same bad father and set in the Pride world.
@D: Which month’s newsletter? I thought I’d read them all. Hell, I even click to read the excerpts of books I already own.
Gotta say, the lady holds her cards close to her chest. Because I’m thinking she made only the one mention.
Thanks for the heads up, though evidently I’m going back through them to see what else was missed.
