  • An Extraordinary Union

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole is $2.99! Simply put, GET THIS BOOK. It’s a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. It was our book club selection for April and Sarah completely loved it:

First, yes, you should absolutely read this book immediately, if you haven’t already. There is so much happening in the conflict within each of the protagonists, between the protagonists, and around them and their allies and enemies, I can’t possibly discuss all of it, but please know: if you are a reader (and why else would you be here, right?) this book is a marvelous, intelligent, respectful, breathtaking treat for your brain.

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South—to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet—risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause—and an undeniable attraction—Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy’s favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost—even if it means losing each other . . .

  • A Study in Scarlet Women

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas

RECOMMENDED: A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas is $1.99! Both Sarah and Carrie read this book and enjoyed it.

Sarah gave it a B+:  As usual, reading Sherry Thomas re-introduces me to my own first language, and in this case, re-introduced me to a character in a way I found incredible. I haven’t shut up about this book since I finished it. My outbound text messages are mostly hollering, squeeing, and long strings of vowels about this book.

I’m so excited this book exists. I’m so excited that I got to read it. I’m so excited there will be more.

Carrie gave it B: I honestly do not care about any of the mysteries that may occur in the next book. But I can’t WAIT to find out what Charlotte, Livia, and Mrs. Watson are up to. I hope it involves all of them, and Bernadine, living somewhere wonderful and eating plum cake, because that cake sounded amazing. And I hope it involves them being protective of each other, empowering, and smart. The excitement is palpable!

USA Today bestselling author Sherry Thomas turns the story of the renowned Sherlock Holmes upside down…

With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper class society.  But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London.

When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name. She’ll have help from friends new and old—a kind-hearted widow, a police inspector, and a man who has long loved her. But in the end, it will be up to Charlotte, under the assumed name Sherlock Holmes, to challenge society’s expectations and match wits against an unseen mastermind.

  • Daring Fate

    Daring Fate by Megan Erickson

Daring Fate by Megan Erickson is 99c! This is the first book in the Silver Tip Pack series and is a gay paranormal romance with shifters. Readers say the book is gritty and sexy, but warn that if insta-love isn’t your thing, steer clear because it has the fated mates trope.

We all have tragic backstories in today’s world.

I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.

When I’m taken to meet Dare, the alpha of the Silver Tip pack, I’m sure I’m about to lose my throat. The last thing I expect is for the Alpha to recognize me as his fated mate. No way is he going to let me go now, and I still have to find a way to rescue my sister.

As I plot my escape to save her, I find that if I leave, Dare could be killed by power-hungry members of his pack. And now he’s more to me than my fated mate—my heart is involved. With time ticking by on my sister’s life, I have to make a choice I never thought I’d face—my sister’s life or my mate’s? That’s if I can survive the undead shifters intent on killing me first…

Kiss Marry Kill by Sidney Halston is $1.99! This romantic suspense has a second chance romance between a singer and a military man. Readers say there’s plenty of action to keep the plot going, but mention there’s a lot of sex happening in the presence of danger. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

Now she’s an internationally famous musician and he’s officially out of the military, but when their worlds collide, can they keep things strictly professional? Five years and a tour in Afghanistan later, Jax is back stateside running his own private security firm, Iron-Clad, with his best friend. Megan Cruz has made something of herself. She’s turned her dreams of pop stardom into a reality. But when a deadly stalker breaks into her home claiming to be her number-one fan, the only person she can turn to is the boy who got away. 1. Patsy says:

I think I might be the only person who didn’t enjoy An Extraordinary Union. I enjoyed the main plot, but I thought that there should have been more POV from Elle, especially near the climax and end of the book. Also, I think this is a case where the sex got in the way of the action. I didn’t mind the pausing for the romantic moment, but the stopping for such an interlude seemed out of character for characters on such an important and time-sensitive mission. All I could think was, “this is not the TIME! RUN!”

  2. Laurel says:

I also didn’t enjoy An Extraordinary Union. I have enjoyed other Alyssa Cole books, particularly Let it Shine, but this one didn’t work for me. I think the hype for this book may have raised my expectations too high.

  3. Hazel says:

    I wasn’t crazy about it, either. 🙂

In particular, I thought the language, both narrative and dialogue, failed to convey any sense of time and place. I found that disappointing, and it made it difficult for me to get into the story.

  4. Peggy says:

Worlds of Ink and Shadows by Lena Coakley is $2.99 today @ amazon.
(YA fantasy about Bronte siblings. Carrie S gave it an A!)

  5. Jill Q. says:

Put me down as another one who didn’t care for An Extraordinary Union. I thought I was the only one! I thought Elle trusted the hero way too quickly considering the circumstances. I have a few more of Alyssa Cole books on my TBR I want to try. Civil War isn’t one of my favorite time periods, so that may have something to do with it.

  6. Ele says:

Okay, I’ve got to counter all the negativity about An Extraordinary Union. I really liked it–this is a period of history I know a bit about, so this case alive for me quite vividly. Lots of action, which I really like. I do agree with Patsy though, that in a way, the love story kind of interfered with the action a bit. Still, all in all, a winner for me.

  7. SusanE says:

I had picked up An Extraordinary Union in an earlier sale but was putting off starting it. I was a bit intimidated by all the squee, as if I thought that if I didn’t like it I would get kicked out of the bitchery and be asked to return my BDBC coffee mug. Now that my expectations are lowered the pressure is off so I can start reading it as a normal book.
I should know by now that if every reviewer/commenter loves a book that doesn’t really mean everyone loves it.

  8. DonnaMarie says:

    Silver Tip Pack?
    Really, no one thinks that’s…
    It’s just me, right?

  9. cleo says:

The hero of Daring Fate smells like pine and honeysuckle. FYI. For those playing bingo.

And to weigh in on the Alyssa Cole – it was a B read for me. I loved the story but didn’t completely buy the romance. And there was at least one time when I was like “this is not the time for sexy-times!” And I still recommend it.

  10. miniglik says:

My issues with An Extraordinary Union were that the heroine was so remarkable and her mission so dire that I just didn’t care if she found love then. But it’s still a great book for me because she was great and the plot mattered.

  11. cleo says:

@DonnaMarie – all of the members of the silver tip pack have silver tipped … ears.

  12. Nora says:

I actually DNFed “An Extraordinary Union,” so you’re not alone. The dialogue was really weak.

  13. Hera says:

I DNFed An Extraordinary Union, too. It was so stressful to me that they kept doing risky things for no real reason, and I couldn’t figure out what they saw in each other that made it worth the risk and social barriers. My favorite Alyssa Cole is still Let It Shine. I love that one.

  14. I -FINALLY- got my video review of An Extraordinary Union posted AND OMG OMG OMG IF ANY OF YALL AIN’T READ THIS BOOK JUST STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND GO DO IT!

Am I the only one who reads a fuck ton of romance novels, but rarely do many of them STAY with me? That could just be my shit memory but damn this book stuck like glue!
