Erotica, M/M Romance, and the Apocalypse

  • Wonder Woman Unbound

Wonder Woman Unbound by Tim Hanley

RECOMMENDED: Wonder Woman Unbound by Tim Hanley is $3.82 at Amazon and $4.99 elsewhere. While not your typical discounted price, I thought this would be great to tie in for RHG’s Wonder Woman film review. Carrie really enjoyed this book and it earned an A+ grade:

Wonder Woman has persisted as a feminist icon whether she is taking over a Nazi U-boat, or getting excited about shopping and dating a new crush, or twirling around on our TV sets (I LOVED that show!). At her best and at her worst, she stands for justice and she always gets the bad guy. This book did a great job of tracing her history in an entertaining interesting way and I highly recommend it!

This close look at Wonder Woman’s history portrays a complicated heroine who is more than just a female Superman with a golden lasso and bullet-deflecting bracelets. The original Wonder Woman was ahead of her time, advocating female superiority and the benefits of matriarchy in the 1940s. At the same time, her creator filled the comics with titillating bondage imagery, and Wonder Woman was tied up as often as she saved the world. In the 1950s, Wonder Woman begrudgingly continued her superheroic mission, wishing she could settle down with her boyfriend instead, all while continually hinting at hidden lesbian leanings. While other female characters stepped forward as women’s lib took off in the late 1960s, Wonder Woman fell backwards, losing her superpowers and flitting from man to man. Ms. magazine and Lynda Carter restored Wonder Woman’s feminist strength in the 1970s, turning her into a powerful symbol as her checkered past was quickly forgotten. Exploring this lost history adds new dimensions to the world’s most beloved female character, and Wonder Woman Unbound delves into her comic book and its spin-offs as well as the myriad motivations of her creators to showcase the peculiar journey that led to Wonder Woman’s iconic status.

  • Radio Silence

    Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole

Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole is $1.99 at most vendors! Carrie reviewed this book in April of 2015. Redheadedgirl also said, “Based on a rec from Courtney Milan, this is set during an apocalyptic event with a we-all-need-to-work-together and try not to go nutty from the isolation plot – it’s tight, tense, and really good.”

    No one expects the apocalypse.

Arden Highmore was living your average postgrad life in Rochester, New York, when someone flipped the “off” switch on the world. No cell phones, no power, no running water—and no one knows why. All she and her roommate, John, know for sure is that they have to get out, stat. His family’s cabin near the Canadian border seemed like the safest choice.

It turns out isolation doesn’t necessarily equal safety.

When scavengers attack, it’s John’s ridiculously handsome brother, Gabriel, who comes to the rescue. He saves Arden’s life, so he can’t be all bad…but he’s also a controlling jerk who treats her like an idiot. Now their parents are missing and it seems John, Gabriel, their kid sister, Maggie, and Arden are the only people left alive who aren’t bloodthirsty maniacs.

No one knows when—or if—the lights will come back on and, in the midst of all that, Arden and Gabriel are finding that there’s a fine line indeed between love and hate. How long can they expect to last in this terrifying new world, be it together or apart?

  • The Theory of Attraction

The Theory of Attraction by Delphine Dryden

RECOMMENDED: The Theory of Attraction by Delphine Dryden is 99c! Sarah really enjoyed this book, and this series, and if you like contemporary BDSM erotic romance with very thoughtful characters, you’ll probably like this. Sarah read this book and said:

I’m really finicky when it comes to erotic romance, especially romance with BDSM, and I thought this story was an excellent blend of erotic tension and character development. Plus the hero is really fascinating. This is a terrific… read – I hope you’ll give it a try.

Camilla can set her watch by her hunky rocket-scientist neighbor who jogs past her window each day. She relishes each glimpse of his shirtless abs, and is dying to see more. But it’s hard to connect with a man who doesn’t seem to know she exists…

Ivan feels at home in the lab, not in social situations. When he finally approaches his attractive neighbor, it’s not for a date—he wants tutoring in how to behave at an important fundraiser. Ivan doesn’t expect the chemistry between them to be quite so explosive, and is surprised when Cami actually accepts his proposal to embark on a series of “lessons.”

Cami soon discovers Ivan’s schedule isn’t the only thing he likes to be strict about—he needs to be charge in the bedroom as well. She’s shocked at how much she comes to enjoy her submissive side, but wonders if a real relationship is in the equation…

  • Stranger on the Shore

Stranger on the Shore by Josh Lanyon

Stranger on the Shore by Josh Lanyon is $1.99! This is a gay romance with some suspense/mystery elements, as both heroes are tied to the cold case of a missing child. Some readers didn’t really feel the chemistry or romance between the two main characters, but others recommend it if you’re a big fan of mysteries.

Twenty years ago, little Brian Arlington was kidnapped from his family’s Long Island estate and was never seen again. The trail went cold, but investigative journalist Griff Hadley has always thought there was more to the story—much more. When the Arlingtons’ patriarch invites him to stay at their estate to research his true crime book, Griff can’t say no. It’s the story of a lifetime.

But not everyone is happy about Griff’s presence. Relatives and staff alike regard him coldly, including Pierce Mather, the Arlingtons’ attractive lawyer, who is more than a little wary of Griff’s motives.

When a stranger shows up claiming to be the long-lost Brian, Griff and Pierce are united in their suspicions. Startled to have found an ally in the buttoned-up lawyer, Griff soon realizes it’s hard to keep a professional distance. Even in the midst of a groundbreaking investigation, even in the face of a shocking family secret…

  1. Des Livres says:

It’s Josh Lanyon, who is actually female. This is not the best book to start with – the Adrien English series is better. The first one is Fatal Shadows.

  2. @Amanda says:

    @Des Livres: Fixed!

  3. Des Livres says:

And um, just to be a snickety bottom, I’d call this more a mystery with a romantic subplot. Lanyon has been drifting away from romance, even as she tries to write them.

  4. Christine says:

    Loved The Theory of Attraction!

  5. hng23 says:

What is The Theory of Attraction? Does it explain that extra arm/leg/whatever on the front & to whom it belongs? I can’t get past that cover!

  6. Val says:

@hhg23 I was thinking the same thing!! The woman in the cover three boobs and her leg is literally coming out from her ribs and it’s kind of freaking me out…

The Theory of Attraction deserves to feature in a cover snark post!!!

P.S. Even though the cover is awful, I just bought The Theory of Attraction

  7. YotaArmai says:

Omgosh I loved the Theory of series. If anybody has recs for similar books I would love it.

  9. Georgina says:

Wonder Woman Unbound is pretty good. A bit academic in places (I was not surprised to learn, in the endnotes, that it started as a dissertation) but it’s a solid overview of the creation and history of the character. Recommended!

  10. cleo says:

I really enjoyed Radio Silence and the whole Off the Grid trilogy (it has both m/f and m/m pairings and all of them are IR). Radio Silence is very claustrophobic and the other two books expand out into the larger world. The world building is pretty good by PNR standards, but a little light by SF/F standards.

This is the series that made me fall in love with Alyssa Cole.

  11. KB says:

Despite the weird cover (in my head the guy is thinking OMG what the hell is her leg doing here???) I really enjoyed Theory of Attraction and thought its portrayal of BDSM was refreshing. I have even reread it once already. Not sure if I would have wanted to pay full price as it’s pretty short, but for 99c I would recommend!
