  • Lost Lake

Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen

Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen is $2.99 at Amazon and iBooks! I’m not sure how long this deal will last, as I believe it was a Kindle Daily Deal this weekend. I can’t recommended Allen’s books highly enough and I  love the magical realism she incorporates. However, some readers wished they could have identified more with the characters.

From the author of New York Times bestseller Garden Spells comes a beautiful, haunting story of old loves and new, and the power of the connections that bind us forever…

The first time Eby Pim saw Lost Lake, it was on a picture postcard. Just an old photo and a few words on a small square of heavy stock, but when she saw it, she knew she was seeing her future.

That was half a life ago. Now Lost Lake is about to slip into Eby’s past. Her husband George is long passed. Most of her demanding extended family are gone. All that’s left is a once-charming collection of lakeside cabins succumbing to the Southern Georgia heat and damp, and an assortment of faithful misfits drawn back to Lost Lake year after year by their own unspoken dreams and desires.

It’s a lot, but not enough to keep Eby from relinquishing Lost Lake to a developer with cash in hand, and calling this her final summer at the lake. Until one last chance at family knocks on her door.

Lost Lake is where Kate Pheris spent her last best summer at the age of twelve, before she learned of loneliness, and heartbreak, and loss. Now she’s all too familiar with those things, but she knows about hope too, thanks to her resilient daughter Devin, and her own willingness to start moving forward. Perhaps at Lost Lake her little girl can cling to her own childhood for just a little longer… and maybe Kate herself can rediscover something that slipped through her fingers so long ago.

One after another, people find their way to Lost Lake, looking for something that they weren’t sure they needed in the first place: love, closure, a second chance, peace, a mystery solved, a heart mended. Can they find what they need before it’s too late?

At once atmospheric and enchanting, Lost Lake shows Sarah Addison Allen at her finest, illuminating the secret longings and the everyday magic that wait to be discovered in the unlikeliest of places.

  • Blush for Me

Blush for Me by Kristen Proby

Blush for Me by Kristen Proby is $1.99! This is the third book in the Fusion series, but it can be read as a standalone. There’s also an element of forced proximity. Some readers say this is their favorite book in the series, though some found the romance and conflict to happen way too easily.

New York Times bestselling author Kristen Proby continues to delight the senses with the latest novel in her delectable Fusion series.

As the take-charge wine bar manager of Seduction, Portland’s hottest new restaurant, Katrina Meyers is the definition of no-nonsense, and she isn’t afraid of anything. Well, almost anything: she hates to fly. When she’s forced to travel on a death trap with wings, the turbulence from hell has her reaching for any safe haven—including the incredibly handsome guy sitting next to her.

Ryan “Mac” MacKenzie hasn’t been able to get his sexy seatmate out of his head. The way she clung to him stirred something inside him he didn’t think existed: tenderness. As the owner of a successful wine touring company, Mac thinks he’s got a handle on what life can throw at him and he’s not prepared for any surprises, especially in the feelings department. And when he brings a tour into Seduction, he sees the petite spitfire he just can’t forget.

Mac is determined to discover what else they have in common besides fine wine and the inability to keep their hands off each other. But what will it take for two stubborn people to realize that what they have is so much more than a hot chemistry between the sheets and to admit to falling in love…?

  • The Cinderella Deal

The Cinderella Deal by Jennifer Crusie

The Cinderella Deal by Jennifer Crusie is $1.99! Crusie is an auto-buy author for a lot of people, and she writes some great contemporary romances that are sweet and funny. Readers loved the opposites attract/fake relationship plot, though many readers feel like it’s a little dated since it was originally published in the mid-nineties. Have you read this one?

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Crusie brings humor and storytelling magic to this modern-day romance of a match made anywhere but in heaven–but destined for a fairy-tale ending.

Daisy Flattery is a free spirit with a soft spot for strays and a weakness for a good story. Why else would she agree to the outrageous charade offered by her buttoned-down workaholic neighbor, Linc Blaise? The history professor needs to have a fiancée in order to capture his dream job, and Daisy is game to play the role. But something funny happens on their way to the altar that changes everything. Now, with the midnight hour approaching, will Daisy lose her prince, or will opposites not only attract but live happily ever after?

  • Love Taker

    Love Taker by Erin McCarthy

Love Taker by Erin McCarthy is 99c! This is a second chance, friends-to-lovers romance and I love that the heroine has glasses on the cover. The book copy mentions a traumatic past, but I couldn’t suss out what that means via Goodreads review. If anyone knows, definitely leave a comment! The romance has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

The Nashville Nights series is burning up backstage in this sensual friends-to-lovers novel featuring a good-guy cop and a woman who’s been looking for Mr. Right in all the wrong places.

Pretty-boy musicians are a fixture of the Nashville country scene—and Elle Hart, hairdresser to the stars, is beginning to think that they’re all total pricks. Elle’s dating choices have been a disaster, but at least she has Tucker. Though he’s easy on the eyes, no one would ever accuse Jason Michael Tucker of being a pretty boy. The humble and handsome sheriff’s deputy from Elle’s hometown has always been there to comfort her—until the evening their friendship unexpectedly leads to the best sex Elle has ever had.

Tucker has been lusting after Elle since they were an item as teens, but he knows that their wild night of passion is a one-time thing. He’s an old friend, nothing more, and they’re too different to become a couple just because they’ve knocked boots. After all, she hates being back in their hometown, and he’s not so fond of the big city. But when Elle comes to Tucker with news that changes everything, he must help her come to grips with her traumatic past—or risk losing her forever.

  1. Megan M. says:

Sarah Addison Allen is an auto-buy author for me! My favorite of hers is probably her debut, Garden Spells, but I’ve never been disappointed in her stories and I thought Lost Lake was great.

I just one-clicked Love Taker … a friends-to-lovers sounds good to me right about now.

  2. DonnaMarie says:

OMG!!! I just got a whiff of surprise baby trope! Clickity click.

  3. cleo says:

I really love The Cinderella Deal, but it is definitely an early Crusie – the writing isn’t as smooth as her later, longer single titles.

It’s a lovely opposites attract story, plus marriage of convenience. And it’s both funny and heart-warming.

  4. Christine says:

I’ve been rereading Jennifer Crusie books lately and have been struck by how well some of them have aged, and how dated others seem to me now. There’s a very eighties vibe to some of them that I can’t get past–Strange Bedpersons, for one. But then Getting Rid of Bradley is grouped with it in the same “universe,” and I find it still very relevant and funny.

  5. Rose says:

I adore Sarah Addison Allen and I have devoured each of her books the day they hit the library, but Lost Lake isn’t my favorite. The atmosphere was lush and gorgeous and all you could hope for, but I felt the romance was a little faded. It might be perfect for a reader who’s more into the exploration of setting and not so much into Allen’s trademark magical passion, but I loved it less than Garden Spells or Sugar Queen.

  6. Kareni says:

I’ll mention (again) that Dark Horse (Class 5 Series Book 1) by Michelle Diener is currently free to Kindle readers. It’s a science fiction romance.

  7. Leanne H. says:

Me this morning: Okay, I CANNOT buy any more ebooks this week. Even if they are on sale.

Me just now: *one-clicking Jennifer Crusie like a champ*

    Sigh. There’s always next week.

  8. Sue Danic says:

Jennifer Crusie is always an auto-buy. I’ve got them in hardcover, paperback and e-book form. You never know when you’ll want to re-read a Crusie

  9. Katie Lynn says:

Single Malt by Layla Reyne is $0.99, mm FBI romantic suspense. I haven’t read it, but it’s a Carina and I am rarely disappointed in their offerings.

  10. cleo says:

@ Christine – I don’t think I realized the connection between Strange Bedpersons (which I didn’t care for and I agree is dated) and Getting Rid of Bradley (which is on my comfort read rotation).

Charlie All Night is another early one that I really love.

  11. Christine says:

@ Cleo, I didn’t realize either until I bought an ebook bundle and read them one after the other–those two and What the Lady Wants all take place in Riverbend (dale? River-something). I think What the Lady Wants holds up well, too–probably because the characters are already trying to recreate another era. Charlie All Night is also one of my favorites 🙂 I just read Welcome to Temptation for the first time and loved it, but it’s paired with Bet Me in that bundle and I can’t read Bet Me–the premise of asking someone out as a bet while pretending to like them is too painful.

  12. Briana says:

Christine, re: Bet Me – he doesn’t though. He doesn’t make the bet and says it’s an awful thing to suggest. It just colors everything. Just sayin’.

  13. Emily says:

@Christine I agree with Briana – Bet Me is one of my favorite of her books and they definitely cover the squickiness of faking interest in someone. The heroine is one of my favorite angry Crusie heroines, I love her.

  14. cleo says:

@Christine and @Brianna – I think he does actually take the bet to ask her out to dinner but not the bet to sleep with her. Because she overhears the bet (and thinks he took the bet to sleep with her) she’s never actually fooled.

I love Bet Me, but it does require a suspension of disbelief.

  15. Scene Stealer says:

Without giving anything away, the traumatic past in “Love Taker” deals with Elle and her siblings being raised in poverty stricken conditions with a violent, neglectful parent. That theme runs throughout the series. I liked all 3 books.

  16. Caitlin says:

I love Bet Me. He is actually a really great hero AND he is dyslexic, like me, so that was pretty special.

The early Crusies are a lot more hit or miss for me, although I adore Getting Rid of Bradley. And I love Fast Women, which is in the same universe as a couple of the earlier ones as well.

  17. Christine says:

@ everyone, it’s been ages since I read Bet Me. Maybe I’ll give it another try. I got part way through the bar scene last week and just thought, nope, I’m not in the mood for this!

  18. Ans says:

Christine – I like Bet Me, and a LOT of people seem to love it to bits. I have some issues with it, but once you get through the – fairly dumb and boring, in my opinion – first chapter or two, it definitely gets better. And a lot more charming.

  19. Jennifer says:

If it wouldn’t have killed my Kindle, Love Taker would have made me throw it across the room. Ugh.

  20. Ms. M says:

I <3 Bet Me, but I reread it within the past week (coincidence!) and it is a tiny bit dated. Not emotionally or romantically, but you can get within 3-5 years of when it was published from the references to the Atkins diet, the snobbery about cell phone etiquette/style, the use of a payphone, and the lack of texting. It's funny– I read it in 2009 and everything felt perfectly normal, but already I was thinking "uh-uh, this would be different."
