  • Rose Daughter

    Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley

Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Readers say that McKinley’s Beauty is a better take on the retelling, but others loved the character relationships in the book. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

Award-winning author Robin McKinley returns to one of our most enduring fairy tales to tell an enthralling story of love and redemption

Once upon a time, a wealthy merchant had three daughters . . . and when the merchant’s business failed, he and his three daughters left their grand house in the city and moved to a tiny cottage buried deep in the countryside. The youngest daughter, Beauty, is fascinated by the long, thorny stems of an unknown plant that overwhelms the neglected cottage, and she tends it until, the following summer, its rich, fragrant flowers are the most glorious things the sisters have ever seen: roses.

An old woman tells Beauty: “Roses are for love. Not . . . silly sweethearts’ love but the love that makes you and keeps you whole. . . . There’s an old folk-tale . . . there aren’t many roses around any more because they need more love than people have to give ’em . . . and the only thing that’ll stand in for love is magic, though it ain’t as good.”

There’s no magic in the town of Longchance, but, the old woman adds, Beauty may not know that this is the result of a sorcerers’ battle that happened many years ago, a battle that left a monster, or perhaps a beast, in an enchanted palace somewhere in the deep forest . . . and a curse concerning a family of three sisters.

  • Wicked Lovely

    Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

RECOMMENDED: Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr is 99c! This is the first book in the Wicked Lovely YA series and features all sorts of faerie creatures. Some reviewers found it boring, though it has over 100K ratings on GR with a standing of 3.6-stars. Many readers feel the book is well worth getting through the breaks in the action.

Sarah says this is one of her favorite YA fantasy novels, and she’s recommended it to many, many people. It’s absorbing, touching, a little scary, and worth way more than $1.

Rule #3: Don’t stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty – especially if they learn of her Sight – and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don’t speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don’t ever attract their attention.
But it’s too late. Keenan is the Summer King, who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost — regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.

Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr’s stunning twenty-first-century faery tale.

  • The Scent of Shadows

The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson

The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson is $2.99! This is an urban fantasy novel that has been recommended in a couple Rec Leagues: A Family of Strong-Heroine-Loving Series Readers and Character Driven Urban Fantasy. However, some readers said there are quite a few plot holes. Trigger warning as some reviews mention violence and rape.

When she was sixteen, Joanna Archer was brutally assaulted and left to die in the Nevada desert. By rights, she should be dead.

Now a photographer by day, she prowls a different Las Vegas after sunset—a grim, secret Sin City where Light battles Shadow—seeking answers to whom or what she really is . . . and revenge for the horrors she was forced to endure.

But the nightmare is just beginning—for the demons are hunting Joanna, and the powerful shadows want her for their own . . .

  • The Chaos of Stars

The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White

The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White is $1.99 at Amazon! Hopefully, it’ll be price-matched later this afternoon. This is a YA fantasy with a heroine who is the daughter of Egyptian gods, which is a pretty cool setup. Some readers found the heroine difficult to like despite the setting, while others loved the growth of the heroine from the beginning to end of the book. It has a 3.6-star rating on Goodreads.

Kiersten White, New York Times bestselling author of Paranormalcy, is back with The Chaos of Stars—an enchanting novel set in Egypt and San Diego that captures the magic of first love and the eternally complicated truth about family.

Isadora’s family is seriously screwed up—which comes with the territory when you’re the human daughter of the ancient Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris. Isadora is tired of living with crazy relatives who think she’s only worthy of a passing glance—so when she gets the chance to move to California with her brother, she jumps on it. But her new life comes with plenty of its own dramatic—and dangerous—complications . . . and Isadora quickly learns there’s no such thing as a clean break from family.

Blending Ally Carter’s humor and the romance of Cynthia Hand’s Unearthly, The Chaos of Stars takes readers on an unforgettable journey halfway across the world and back, and proves there’s no place like home.

  1. DonnaMarie says:

I heartily recommend Vicki Pettersson’s books. The zodiac series got a little crazy at the end, but sometimes that totally works and I. never got the sense she didn’t know exactly where she wanted to go. I’ve recommended her other series, Celestial Blues in some previous posts as well. She a great story teller.

  2. Susan says:

The Pettersson series was all over the place for me. I liked the first book, but successive ones weren’t consistent and I really considered DNFing the series (something that kills me to do). I stuck with it, tho, and the final book did kinda redeem things for me, but not to the point that I’ve ever wanted to reread any of the books.

  3. cbackson says:

I found the Kiersten White book enjoyable but not memorable. At $1.99 I’d say it’s worth it as a sort of light read that isn’t going to make you too emotionally engaged (which can be fine…sometimes I need to not be on an emotional rollercoaster with a book).

  4. The Other Kate says:

I’ve always thought Rose Daughter was better than Beauty. Beauty felt almost like a farce to me, while Rose Daughter was more of a Gothic romance. The scenery and settings of Rose Daughter are positively luscious.

  5. CelineB says:

Must Love Rogues by Eva Devon is free at Amazon at least. I’m not sure how this ended up on my radar, but I’m sure I put it in my wish list because the author says it’s her tribute to Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing.

  6. Lora says:

I liked Beauty far better than Rose Daughter but I think the latter is certainly worth reading at that price. I just objected to the crazysauce ending more than anything else.
Wicked Lovely–well, the title was better than the book as far as I was concerned.
I haven’t read Chaos of Stars but I think it has an exquisite cover. I’m not reading YA right now (I burned myself out on it and I’m in contemporary romcom currently) but I’ll keep it in mind.

  7. Katie C. says:

As others have been mentioning on recent Sales posts, Amazon has changed the Sort features on Wish Lists and no longer allows you to sort by price. I wrote an email to customer service complaining about the change and haven’t heard anything back, so I decided to complain to the CEO himself and just e-mailed Jeff Bezos stating that I am a long time Amazon customer and Prime member and that I extremely disappointed in the change and plan to buy less from them as a result. I would suggest others who hate the change also write to him – jeff at amazon.com

  8. Emily C says:

As of this moment Rose Daughter is only $1.13 on Amazon- one-click!!

  9. Dee says:

I loved the first three Pettersson books and then they started to jump ship. I stayed but the series wrapped up in a way I didn’t enjoy. I’ve never given them another chance or tried her new series.

Kind of the same thing with Wicked Lovely. I loved the first two books, but when the POV shifts got a little crazy I DNF’d them.

  10. Rose says:

Lisa Kleypas’ Dreaming of You is $2.99 on Kindle! I read it for the first time last week and completely lost my shit over it (in the best way) so I highly recommend!!

  11. KellyM says:

That “guy” on The Scent of Shadows cover is like something from childhood nightmares, yikes! Also, I would run up the stairs in the dark really fast because I was sure he was lurking at the bottom.

  12. Michelle says:

I’ve been able to sort by price and price drop using the Amazon app. Unfortunately you can’t make a purchase from the app but at least you can sort your list(s) then go to the Amazon site to buy. I hope they bring the sort options back to the website soon

  13. CelineB says:

Mine worked in the app until 2 or 3 days ago, so enjoy it while you can! Or hopefully Amazon will listen and change things back before it stops working for you.
