A Certain Age
A Certain Age by Beatriz Williams is $1.99! This is a historical fiction novel set in New York’s Jazz Age. This book was released earlier this summer and readers loved the sense of place Williams created. It’s also a retelling of an opera, which is pretty cool! However, others found the story a bit underwhelming compared to the jacket copy. It has a 3.6-star rating on Goodreads.
The bestselling author of A Hundred Summers brings the Roaring Twenties brilliantly to life in this enchanting and compulsively readable tale of intrigue, romance, and scandal in New York Society, brimming with lush atmosphere, striking characters, and irresistible charm.
As the freedom of the Jazz Age transforms New York City, the iridescent Mrs. Theresa Marshall of Fifth Avenue and Southampton, Long Island, has done the unthinkable: she’s fallen in love with her young paramour, Captain Octavian Rofrano, a handsome aviator and hero of the Great War. An intense and deeply honorable man, Octavian is devoted to the beautiful socialite of a certain age and wants to marry her. While times are changing and she does adore the Boy, divorce for a woman of Theresa’s wealth and social standing is out of the question, and there is no need; she has an understanding with Sylvo, her generous and well-respected philanderer husband.
But their relationship subtly shifts when her bachelor brother, Ox, decides to tie the knot with the sweet younger daughter of a newly wealthy inventor. Engaging a longstanding family tradition, Theresa enlists the Boy to act as her brother’s cavalier, presenting the family’s diamond rose ring to Ox’s intended, Miss Sophie Fortescue—and to check into the background of the little-known Fortescue family. When Octavian meets Sophie, he falls under the spell of the pretty ingénue, even as he uncovers a shocking family secret. As the love triangle of Theresa, Octavian, and Sophie progresses, it transforms into a saga of divided loyalties, dangerous revelations, and surprising twists that will lead to a shocking transgression . . . and eventually force Theresa to make a bittersweet choice.
Full of the glamour, wit and delicious twists that are the hallmarks of Beatriz Williams’ fiction and alternating between Sophie’s spirited voice and Theresa’s vibrant timbre, A Certain Age is a beguiling reinterpretation of Richard Strauss’s comic opera Der Rosenkavalier, set against the sweeping decadence of Gatsby’s New York.

What You Need
What You Need by Lorelei James is $1.99! This is the first book in the Need You contemporary romance series. This is also a workplace romance, if that’s your catnip. I read this one and I loved a lot of the secondary characters, but this was a romance where it seemed like everyone was out to get the heroine. Have you read this one? What’d you think?
New York Times bestseller Lorelei James introduces a new family for readers to fall in love with in the Need You series. The Lund name is synonymous with wealth and power in Minneapolis-St. Paul. But the four Lund siblings will each discover true love takes a course of its own…
As the CFO of Lund Industries, Brady Lund is the poster child for responsibility. But eighty hour work weeks leave him little time for a life outside his corner office. His brothers stage an intervention and drag him to a seedy night club…where he sees her, the buttoned up blonde from the secretarial pool who’s starred in his fantasies for months.
Lennox Greene is a woman with a rebellious past—which she carefully conceals beneath her conservative clothes. She knows flirting with her sexy, but aloof boss during working hours is a bad idea. So when Brady shows up at her favorite dive bar, sans his usual snappy suit, and catches her cutting loose, she throws caution aside and dares him to do the same.
After sparks fly, Brady finds keeping his hands off Lennox during office hours is harder than expected. While she makes him feel alive for the first time in years, a part of him wonders if she’s just using him to get ahead. And Lennox must figure out if Brady wants her for the accomplished woman she is—or the bad girl she was.

Beck and Call
Beck and Call by Emma Holly is 99c! This is a BDSM menage erotic romance with a P.I. heroine, a fake relationship, and a billionaire. The romance POV does jump between the three characters, which confused some readers, but others recommend this if you’re into really hot erotic romances.
The man everybody wants. The woman he can’t resist. The dom who masters both.
Women can’t keep their hands off billionaire Damien Call. The mysterious mogul has it all: fast cars, killer looks, and a brain that just might be his best asset.
Mia Beck loves her job at a PI firm. Her coworker Jake stars in most of her daydreams, so seeing him everyday is no hardship.
Jake hasn’t believed in human goodness since he worked black ops for the CIA. Romancing innocent Mia is unthinkable, no matter how enticingly submissive she seems to be. Then a case of corporate espionage forces them to pose as a dom/sub duo, to catch the eye of accused wrongdoer Damien. No fantasy is off limits for this voyeur—until the attraction the pair exerts lures him to go hands on . . .

Okay, the Lorelei James book is set in Minnesota (and I AM FROM Minnesota) – SOLD! But, then to add the Lund family to the mix, there is a high end grocery chain here owned by the Lund family. Now I really have to have it!
It wasn’t my favorite Lorelei James, but to be fair that’s a competitive list for me (she’s an auto buy); it was totally solid and the series is settling in and improving as she goes forward. James is awesome at creating complex families and realistic characters; I think the third book in the series is my favorite so far.
These are pretty tame compared to her McKay & Mastered series, too. Different publisher, maybe?
While I haven’t loved Emma Holly’s paranormals, her contemporaries are really good, and her Personal Assets is pretty much the gold standard for erotic romance, so I’ll have to give this one a try.
A Certain Age is first-person present tense. Blech.
@Hope THANK YE FOR DOING THE WORK- and answering my question before I even Googled.
I wish these sale posts had the writing style and tense included. Granted that’s just more work for Amanda, and I can Google, but it would make it more likely that I’d buy. Then again, having to search out that info is a good impulse control for me, but less affiliate link revenue for SBTB.
@Jacqueline: If you just click on the link, you can look at a sample on the seller’s site and see for yourself. No Googling necessary.
Well I certainly put in some unnecessary work; I impulsively one-clicked it, then when I settled in on my lunch break to start reading it, I had to log back into my Amazon account to return it. I’ll put up with a lot for $1.99 but first-person present tense is not on the list.
Jayne Ann Krentz: Deep Waters 1.99
Bella Andre: Wild Heat 0.99
Linda Howard: Troublemaker 1.99
Sabrina Jeffries: The Danger of Desire 1.99

@Hope thanks for the warning!
I’m a sucker for .99 anthologies! Hoping for a good one or two out of the bunch. the Lorelei James will go on my library list for sure, since I’m also a sucker for Midwestern-set romances. Growing up in Michigan, several of my neighbors had Lund boats!
