Love is Red
RECOMMENDED: Love is Red by Sophie Jaff is $1.99! It’s a crazy mindfuck of a book and I loved it! It defies genre categorization, but I gave it an A:
Hannah Wood, [former] associate editor at Harper, reached out to me about the book. Normally, I’m pretty knowledgeable about books coming out, but this one wasn’t even on my radar. The cover reminds me of a YA novel, which isn’t a genre I read often, and admittedly, I was skeptical. I couldn’t exactly nail down the genre, but that’s really part of the beauty of the book. It’s not just one thing. It’s fantasy. It’s thriller. It’s romance. It’s horror.
And it’s good. Real good.
This electrifying, addictive, and hypnotically beautiful debut spins suspense and literary fantasy into a stunning epic—the first volume in the Night Song Trilogy—ablaze with fear, mystery, and possibility.
Katherine Emerson was born to fulfill a dark prophecy centuries in the making, but she isn’t aware that this future awaits. However, there is one man who knows the truth: A killer stalking the women of New York, a monster the media dubs the “Sickle Man” because of the way he turns his victims into canvasses for his mesmerizing, twisted art.
Unleashed upon Manhattan after lying dormant for centuries, the Sickle Man kills to harvest the precious hues of his victims. As his palette grows, so too does his power. Every death brings him closer to the one color, and the one woman, he must possess at any cost.
While the city hunts the Sickle Man, Katherine must decide what to do about two men who have unexpectedly entered her life: handsome and personable David, and alluring yet aloof Sael. Though she’s becoming increasingly torn between them, how well does she really know them? And why is she suddenly plagued by disturbing visions?
Told from the alternating viewpoints of Katherine and the Sickle Man,Love Is Red is a riveting thriller that unfolds into an intense story of obsession and control, desire and fate. Katherine may not realize it yet, but with this haunting novel—as arrestingly original as Marisha Pessl’s Night Film, Patrick Süskind’s Perfume, and Lauren Beukes’s The Shining Girls—her moment of awakening is here. And soon she will find herself fighting a battle at the edges of our world, among forces more dangerous than we can possibly imagine.

The Untouchable Earl
The Untouchable Earl by Amy Sandas is 99c! This is a historical romance with a hero who hates to be touched and a heroine who’s been auctioned off at a pleasure house. Love is Red is peaking my interest, but I seriously hate love triangles. Does anyone who has read it care to chime in on how much of that plays into this? Thanks!
@drewbird: The heroine makes it clear that she’s interested in a specific guy, if I remember correctly. But there’s another that keeps trying to pursue her. It’s been a while since I’ve read it though; my memory may be hazy.
FYI: Love Is Red is only $3.99 on audible. I don’t know if that’s a sale, but it’s a really good price.
Love is Red is also $1.99 at Barnes and Noble.
@drewbird:
I second Amanda’s opinion that it isn’t really a love triangle. While the heroine is involved with two people, it’s pretty clear which guy the heroine is interested in. The tension of the story also comes mostly from the killing part rather than the ‘oh-who-should-I-choose’ part.
Also, Love is Red was a hugely addictive read for me. The switching perspective between the heroine and the villain was done well, and I especially love the villain’s POV. Geniunely unsettling.
I LOVED Chasing Lady Amelia. It was sweet, sexy and funny. The hero and heroine were both wonderfully likeable, their adventures through London entertaining, and enough plot and angst to keep it well paced, without being overbearing. I rarely give five stars, but it earned it from me.
“The Untouchable Earl” is touching that girl all right–in very much the same fashion as The Forbidden Duke is touching his: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CN5G28I/ref=oh_aui_d_detailpage_o01_?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you @Amanda and @Kaitune – I shall give it a shot!
I was immediately arrested by the comparison to Pessl’s Night Film and Lauren Beukes Shining Girls, two novels and two authors I love and which no one else has read despite my babbling in praise. I will definitely read Love is Red.
@Xena: I love Beukes! And I would definitely say that Love is Red has that same creepiness you’d find in Beukes’ writing.
Delightful to hear, Amanda! Have you read Beukes Zoo City? It’s my favorite of hers, although it’s very different Than Shining Girls.
@Xena: I haven’t read Zoo City! I devoured The Shining Girls, Broken Monsters, and her collection of short stories.
