An Unseen Attraction

An Unseen Attraction by K.J. Charles is 99c! This is a relatively new release, coming out this February. It’s a M/M historical romance and was recommended several times in a Rec League on neurodivergent characters. This is also the first book in a new series by Charles and has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.
A slow-burning romance and a chilling mystery bind two singular men in the suspenseful first book of a new Victorian series from K. J. Charles.
Lodging-house keeper Clem Talleyfer prefers a quiet life. He’s happy with his hobbies, his work—and especially with his lodger Rowley Green, who becomes a friend over their long fireside evenings together. If only neat, precise, irresistible Mr. Green were interested in more than friendship…
Rowley just wants to be left alone—at least until he meets Clem, with his odd, charming ways and his glorious eyes. Two quiet men, lodging in the same house, coming to an understanding… it could be perfect. Then the brutally murdered corpse of another lodger is dumped on their doorstep and their peaceful life is shattered.
Now Clem and Rowley find themselves caught up in a mystery, threatened on all sides by violent men, with a deadly London fog closing in on them. If they’re to see their way through, the pair must learn to share their secrets—and their hearts.

The Game and the Governess by Kate Noble is $1.99! Sarah said she’s a big fan of Noble’s writing, whether it’s The Librarians or The Lizzie Bennet Diaries or historical romance. She reviewed this book back when it came out and gave it a B-. It’s not her favorite of Noble’s books, but she says it’s as thoughtful and as memorable:
The Game and the Governess is a thoughtful, intricate novel that deals very heavily with privilege, especially the privilege of the hero. The description that’s part of the cover copy says it best, I think: Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice.
That’s pretty accurate.
Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice in this sexy, saucy romance—first in a new series from the author of YouTube sensation The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.
Three friends. One Wager. Winner takes all.
The Earl—‘Lucky Ned’ Ashby. Pompous, preening, certain that he is beloved by everyone.
The Miller—John Turner. Proud, forced to work as the Earl’s secretary, their relationship growing ever more strained.
The Doctor—Rhys Gray. Practical, peace-loving, but caught in the middle of two warring friends.Their wager is simple: By trading places with John Turner and convincing someone to fall in love with him, Ned plans to prove it’s him the world adores, not his money. Turner plans to prove him wrong.
But no one planned on Phoebe Baker, the unassuming governess who would fall into their trap, and turn everything on its head…

I 1-clicked on the KJ Charles so fast I didn’t even take time to enjoy that glorious cover. *gazes at the pretty*
Then I tried to go for the Kate Noble, but apparently I already own it… *cough*
OOOOH DAT KJ BOOK IS CALLING MY NAME! I know Wanted, A Gentleman is hella recommended, but I don’t read short stories/novellas. Does anyone know if An Unseen Attraction is a full length novel?
@ms Bookjunkie HON SAME! I was like, “Oooh Kate Noble! OOH PURDY COVER! OOOOH THIS LOOKS FAMILIAR-Oh wait I own it.” I swear, only in the romance novel fandom do I have a happy-sad when I can’t buy a book cause I already own it.
@Jacqueline: According to Amazon, the book is a little over 200 pages.
I really liked The Game and the Governess!
The heroine was as close to perfect as they come, and the hero, while not exactly likeable at the start, comes a long way. It was a delight to see him grow and also learn more about his backstory beyond his merry-go-lucky facade. I heartily recommend. The side characters are also very interesting, particularly John Turner, the man who switches places with Ned.
I snapped it a few months back when it was on sale as well and it got me on a Kate Noble binge. I really liked Revealed and The Summer of You, which are part of previous series by her.
As for KJ Charles… Just yesterday I was reading a sample of A Seditious Affair, and I was hooked! Can that one be on sale?? 😉
@Amanda Thank you! I rarely read ebooks so my brain jumped stupid in not knowing where to find that on the Amazon page.
@Claudia AHHH YOU’RE MAKING ME SO EXCITED TO READ THIS BOOK! The only other Kate Noble novel I’ve read is Let It Be Me, and I looooooooooved that book! I read it before I started my YouTube channel, so I need to do a reread just so I can write a proper video script review because damn, she’s a good author!
@Jacqueline: Ooooh i bet you will love The Game and The Governess with more Os!! Let It Be Me was sweet, but TGatG is better in my opinion… 🙂
I am bagging these KJ Charles books every time they come up on sale.
The Game and the Governess – I read that and liked it.
Currently free: Off Campus (Bend or Break Book 1) by Amy Jo Cousins ~ this is an LGBT new adult book.
@Claudia NO FREAKING WAY!!!! Dammit woman you are making me want to read this RIGHT DAMN NOW! And I gotta take a 3-book-break from historicals because I read 3 in a row. (How I Married A Marquess by Anna Harrington & The Study of Seduction by Sabrina Jeffries for my RITA review and An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole for the SBTB bookclub) All were fan-damn-tastic but my other subgenres are feeling neglected.
DAMMIT WHY CAN’T I JUST CLONE MYSELF AND READ ALL OF THE THINGS AT ONCE?!
@Jacqueline I don’t think you should count The Study of Seduction on that list since you were merely doing your bit for the bitchery!
So two books, not three — let the third one be The Game and the Governess! 🙂 I have a feeling you will love the heroine.
There are some Sarah Mayberry backlist titles on sale for $.99 here in the US: “All Over You,” “Burning Up,” and “Take Me On.” I think these may be old Blaze titles that they’re re-releasing with new covers?
I just finished “An Unseen Attraction” and it’s so very, very good. Lovely, sympathetic people falling in love. Asian characters who are actual people.
Can’t put into words how much I appreciate KJ Charles putting that man (who my sister and I agree looks like a friend ours) front and center! Love the representation 😀
@LZ; @Ash
It’s 92p here. Between the handsome cover and the recommendation of ‘real’ characters, how could I resist?
I bought An Unseen Attraction (full price) a while ago, galloped through it and enjoyed every bit of it. I can recommend it.
@Todd: I concur. I started An Unseen Attraction last night. My, what engaging characters; what skilful writing! I am torn between wanting to race through to see what happens next, and wanting to go back to the beginning and read it more slowly, savouring as I go along.
