Intercepting the Chef

Intercepting the Chef by Rachel Goodman is $1.99! I was excited about this book in this month’s Hide Your Wallet post because it blends two of my catnips: an athlete and a foodie character. Readers thought this was a great start to a new series, but found that the heroine was difficult to like at times.
“Smart, sexy, and funny” (Publishers Weekly) contemporary romance writer Rachel Goodman is back with a brand new series about a quarterback trying to score in the most important game of his life—the game of love.
Gwen Lalonde is a rising star in the eyes of the elite restaurateurs of the world. But when her celebrity chef boss and now ex-boyfriend fires her, she finds herself playing a different game. Forced to flee San Francisco and return home to Denver, Gwen lands a spot as the executive chef at Stonestreet’s, a new restaurant owned by NFL golden boy and Colorado Blizzards quarterback Logan Stonestreet. When Logan starts pursuing Gwen romantically, she pulls a classic duck and weave and avoids any advances by throwing herself into reestablishing her reputation in Denver.
But Logan Stonestreet is persistent—he didn’t become one of the best football players in the league by throwing in the towel at the first rejection. Something about Logan’s unwavering determination—and amazing body—keeps Gwen around, and soon there’s more that’s sizzling than just the steak on the grill. Things are getting more serious than either side cares to admit, and when Logan suffers a severe injury in the playoffs, they’re both forced to make game-time decisions. The perfect romance for football fans and foodies alike, Intercepting the Chef is a delicious read that’ll have you hooked until the very last play.

Rookie Move by Sarina Bowen is $2.99! This is book one in the Brooklyn Bruisers series about a hockey team. The second book, which Elyse loved, is discounted a couple bucks. Readers loved the second chance romance in this book, but found the pacing in the first half a bit slow.
The first novel in a sexy new series featuring the hockey players of the Brooklyn Bruisers and the women who win their hearts—from the USA Today bestselling author of the Ivy Years series.
In high school they were the perfect couple—until the day Georgia left Leo in the cold…
Hockey player Leo Trevi has spent the last six years trying to do two things: get over the girl who broke his heart, and succeed in the NHL. But on the first day he’s called up to the newly franchised Brooklyn Bruisers, Leo gets checked on both sides, first by the team’s coach—who has a long simmering grudge, and then by the Bruisers’ sexy, icy publicist—his former girlfriend Georgia Worthington.
Saying goodbye to Leo was one of the hardest things Georgia ever had to do—and saying hello again isn’t much easier. Georgia is determined to keep their relationship strictly professional, but when a press conference microphone catches Leo declaring his feelings for her, things get really personal, really fast….

Rough & Tumble by Rhenna Morgan is 99c! This is the first book in the Haven Brotherhood series and definitely features an alpha hero. Many reviews on Goodreads mention that this was a great read by a new-to-them author with cracktastic, over-the-top goodness. However, some found the hero too alpha for them.
Live hard, f*ck harder and follow only their own rules. Those are the cornerstones the six men of the Haven Brotherhood live and bleed by, refusing to conform to society’s expectations, taking what they want and always watching each other’s backs.
A self-made man with his fingers in a variety of successful businesses, Jace Kennedy lives for the challenge and he always gets what he wants. From the start, he sees Vivienne Moore’s hidden wild side and knows she’s his perfect match, if only he can break it free. He will have her. One way or another.
Vivienne’s determined to ditch the rough lifestyle she grew up in, even if that means hiding her true self behind a bland socialite veneer. Dragging her party-hound sister out of a club was not how she wanted to ring in the New Year, but Viv knows the drill. Get in, get her sister and get back to the safe, stable life she’s built for herself as fast as humanly possible. But Viv’s plans are derailed when she finds herself crashing into the club’s clearly badass and dangerously sexy owner.
Jace is everything Vivienne swore she never wanted, but the more time she spends with him, the more she starts to see that he loves just as fiercely as he fights. He can walk society’s walk and talk society’s talk, but when he wants something, he finds a way to get it. He’s proud of who he is and where he came from, and he’ll be damned if he lets Vivienne go before showing her the safest place of all is in the arms of a dangerous man.

Riveted by Jay Crownover is 99c! This is the third book in the Saints of Denver series and has a road trip element. Some readers found the hero’s tortured inner monologue was too repetitive at times, but others really loved the heroine. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.
Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him…even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.
Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying.
When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

Live hard, fuck harder? I just caaaan’t with that. I can’t take anything after that seriously. Are there real people who talk like that? Seriously? Are they past frat boy age?
I’ve already mentioned by love of Sarina Bowen but I’m gonna repeat it and tell everyone to go buy Rookie Move because it’s good and the next book is even better.
Seconding (or thirding?) the Sarina Bowen recommendation. I loved the first two books. Am siting on the third book right now…I know I’ll love it so am saving it for a tough week when I need a pickup.
I have read the Sarina Bowen Brooklyn Bruisers books, thanks to Rex’s from your good selves. They are very enjoyable. I think the second one is my favourite overall.
Also, I’d like to say that the UK eBook editions have covers that are more pastel & delicate in execution and fail to feature sexy abs in any capacity whatsoever.
Obviously I mean rec’s. Good grief.
The setup of Intercepting the Chef is really off-putting to me. Setting aside the hero’s frankly kind of gross refusal to take no for an answer, she is his employee. The power dynamic is skewed, which makes his persistence even less appealing. No means no, god damn it. It doesn’t mean “keep pestering her and you’ll wear her down eventually.”
