HaBO: Highlander Hero Sends Betrothed a Dirk

This HaBO comes from Sarah Jean, who wants to find a historical romance:

I’m looking for a book I read about twenty years ago.

The hero and heroine were betrothed as children. He is a highlander and she is a lowlander. He sends her birthday gifts and she particularly prizes the dirk he sent her. But I think she’s mad that he never visits her? He finally takes her to his home. A bone of contention between them is that she won’t wear his plaid. She takes to his father, who is the Laird, and when he dies, she wears their plaid over her heart, but won’t do so for her husband. I think there is an old dude who is into playing “golf” with rocks, but that might be another book.

Does anyone know this one?

  1. Jordan says:

Can’t help with which book it is, but the part about golf is from Saving Grace by Julie Garwood.

  2. Moody says:

Try Julie Garwood’s The Wedding. The heroine as a child asks the hero to marry her and when they’re grown he takes her up on it because vengeance! It might also be The Bride in that series. One of them has the golfing with rocks and plaid-refusal going on.

  3. elianara says:

To me it sounds like Julie Garwood too, at least the golf thing.

BTW, this has been a HaBO before, September 15, 2011.

Julie Garwood was a suggestion then too, but it looks like it was never solved. Hope for better luck this time.

  4. Kara says:

Oh this is killing me, because I know I’ve read it, and I can’t remember it.

There’s a cranky old man that likes no one, because they steal his barrels of whiskey (but it’s actually a tradition thing), and she charms the old man and they get drunk together. Right? The whole clan doesn’t think much of this new laird, but the sassy wife brings them around to seeing the human side of her husband.

  5. Erin says:

It sounds like a mishmash of several Garwood stories. Golf and whiskey is Saving Grace. Not wearing the plaid is the Bride. And dirk and childhood betrothal is The Wedding.

But if there is a book that has all this in it, I want to read it.

  6. Jenns says:

The first title that popped into my head was Wonderful by Jill Barnett. The childhood betrothal and heroine’s anger over his lack of visits fit, but it’s been a long time since I’ve read it. I don’t remember much more about it.

I also thought of Saving Grace and The Bride by Julie Garwood.

I hope this HABO is solved soon. I’d love to read (or reread) this book.

  7. L. says:

The Bride is one of my all-time favs and I can assure you there is no golf playing in it.

  8. Leanne H. says:

I Misread The Word Dirk And It Was Hilarious, Part 2.

For real, though, I would love to read this book!!

  9. Gloriamarie says:

I have no idea what book this is but when I saw the headline HaBO: Highlander Hero Sends Betrothed a Dirk, I read it as HaBO: Highlander Hero Sends Betrothed a Dick and wondered how he managed that and whose dick and how did she feel about it. Come to think of it, that sounds like a more interesting story than the HABO story.

  10. Sarah Jean says:

Hmmm. I’ll have to reread The Bride and Saving Grace. It’s totally possible I combined them.

  11. Sheila says:

I know I read this book, I’m thinking maybe Johanna Lindsey…

  12. Kandy Engels says:

There are a lot of elements that sounds like a man up of at least 2 of Julie Garwood books. I’m hoping this is a single book and someone will eventually identify it.

  13. Ann Marie says:

I have read this book too . I have never read anything by Julie Garwood. I think it is by Jill Barnett .
