The Queen of Blood

RECOMMENDED: The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and so far, isn’t being price matched. It earned an A grade from Carrie:
It’s a beautiful and at times harrowing book that is overwhelmingly about the lives of women and their relationships to each other. Best of all, it preserves the beauty and terror of fantasy while avoiding many of fantasy’s clichés.
An idealistic young student and a banished warrior become allies in a battle to save their realm in this first book of a mesmerizing epic fantasy series, filled with political intrigue, violent magic, malevolent spirits, and thrilling adventure
Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . .
But the spirits that reside within this land want to rid it of all humans. One woman stands between these malevolent spirits and the end of humankind: the queen. She alone has the magical power to prevent the spirits from destroying every man, woman, and child. But queens are still just human, and no matter how strong or good, the threat of danger always looms.
With the position so precarious, young women are chosen to train as heirs. Daleina, a seemingly quiet academy student, is under no illusions as to her claim to the throne, but simply wants to right the wrongs that have befallen the land. Ven, a disgraced champion, has spent his exile secretly fighting against the growing number of spirit attacks. Joining forces, these daring partners embark on a treacherous quest to find the source of the spirits’ restlessness—a journey that will test their courage and trust, and force them to stand against both enemies and friends to save their land . . . before it’s bathed in blood.

Alpha Wolf Need Not Apply by Terry Spear is 99c! This paranormal romance seems to have all sorts of catnip. It has a park ranger shifter and the heroine is a she-wolf who is a forester AND the leader of her pack. Readers assure this can be read as a standalone, give that it’s number 19 in a series (whoa). They loved the strong heroine, but noted that the romance gets off to a slow start. It has a 3.9-star rating on Gooreads.

RECOMMENDED: Diablo Lake: Moonstruck by Lauren Dane is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this one and thought it was a great start to the series. Here are some of her thoughts:
This paranormal small Southern town of shifters and witches and rival pack tensions between the Dooleys and Pembrys is immersively fun, sexy, and thoughtful. Protected just came out, but the balance of power in the Pembry pack is shifting (hur hur) from assumed power achieved from physical strength toward strategic and diplomatic strength – prescient and interesting reading on top of (hur hur) the sexxytimes. Bonus points: witches AND vivid, loving female friendships.
In Diablo Lake, Tennessee, a town populated by werewolves, witches, and more, magic woven deep into the earth protects the town’s secrets from outsiders.
Katie Grady left Diablo Lake to get over a humiliating breakup; but her family needs her help, so she’s back, in a sublet right across the hall from the guy she’s lusted after for years. Jace Dooley is hotter than ever, and their friendship picks up along with massive doses of grown-up chemistry.
The very scent of Katie sharpens Jace’s canines, makes the wolf within him stir. There’s nothing more alluring to a Pack Alpha than a sexy female who is so very in charge. She won’t be coddled, but if he plays his hand just right she might be convinced to become his.
Katie presents a challenge to Jace’s wolf nature, whose chief instinct is to protect. Especially now that she’s coming into the magic that is her birthright – and suddenly Jace isn’t the only one who’s interested in Katie, or the raw power she’s just learning to use.

The Raven by Sylvain Reynard is $1.99! This is the first book in the Florentine paranormal romance series. I read this one and had mixed feelings. The heroine is definitely a Mary Sue, but I really loved the setting – Italy! Art! Have you read this one?
From the New York Times bestselling author of the Gabriel series comes a dark, sensual tale of romance in a city shrouded in mystery . . .
Raven Wood spends her days at Florence’s Uffizi gallery restoring Renaissance art. But an innocent walk home after an evening with friends changes her life forever. When she intervenes in the senseless beating of a homeless man, his attackers turn on her, dragging her into an alley. Raven is only semiconscious when their assault is interrupted by a cacophony of growls followed by her attackers’ screams. Mercifully, she blacks out, but not before catching a glimpse of a shadowy figure who whispers to her . . .
Cassita vulneratus.
When Raven awakes, she is inexplicably changed. Upon returning to the Uffizi, no one recognizes her. More disturbingly, she discovers that she’s been absent an entire week. With no recollection of her disappearance, Raven learns that her absence coincides with one of the largest robberies in Uffizi history—the theft of a set of priceless Botticelli illustrations. When the police identify her as their prime suspect, Raven is desperate to clear her name. She seeks out one of Florence’s wealthiest and most elusive men in an attempt to uncover the truth. Their encounter leads Raven to a dark underworld whose inhabitants kill to keep their secrets . . .

The Naked Viscount by Sally MacKenzie is $1.99 at Amazon and BN, at least. It begins with a housebreaking hero and a heroine reading Frankenstein, so I’m in.
The cover font and graphic are silly; therefore, expectations of high seriousness best not apply.
eh, I’ve been on the fence about Sylvain Reynard since the Gabriel’s series which has ALL THE HYPE OMGTHEBESTTHINGEVER!!!
The heroine was wishy washy, the hero bossy and so freaking melodramatic. It also felt overly intellectual. The whole thread with Dante and allegory and the art and the ‘work’ etc etc. It felt mansplain-y ugh. I wanted to love it, but didn’t, so I’ve not delved into this spinoff series even though I have the first book (at the bottom of my TBR).
@ JayneH
I completely agree.
Looks like ‘The Naked Viscount’ is also on sale on Amazon Kindle UK. It’s priced at £1.59.
@Ren Benton: I’m tempted!
Also, books 1-5 in Anne Stuart’s Ice series are priced at £1.99. Crazysauce romantic suspense with gamma heroes.
For a little Medieval Wales, Elizabeth Kingston’s The King’s Man is free at Amazon and BN, at least.
(h/t DA)
@JayneH If you translate Sylvain Reynard into English it is a less pretentious sounding ‘Forest Fox’ which I find very amusing. French makes everything fancy! Since it is a pen name I feel ok making fun of it.
I also enjoyed The Queen of Blood and am looking forward to book two.
@JayneH if you felt that way about the Gabriel series, steer well clear of this one. The Raven is all kinds of all – dubious on the consent, full of stereotypes and all kinds of junk about how women should look. Wanted to love it but it’s decidedly terrible.
Thanks for the affirmation Ladies. It’s good to know I’m not the only one!
Ah, the Raven. I remember the heroine was TSTL and I rage-read through the entire book. It was one of the few times I actually left a review on Goodreads.
If anyone wants to know why I didn’t like it at the time, here’s the review I left. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1191372507
@Ren Benton, if you recommended The King’s Man on a previous post thank you! I just read it and it was so good. It took a bit to get into it but it was totally worth sticking it out.
@Lizzy: I just heard of it myself, but good to know it comes recommended!
“The Reluctant Queen: Book Two of The Queens of Renthia” is FREE on Amazon (.COM,.DE) right now. Sadly, “The Queen of Blood” is at $12.99 / €14.99 again 🙁
I JUST 1 CLICKED MOONSTRUCK SO HARD I BROKE THE BUTTON & SENT IT FLYING OFF INTO THE UNIVERSE!
When I heard Sarah interview Lauren on the podcast, I’d assumed her series was a 1st person POV, main characer multi book series…which is my no go.
I was bummed because the world sounded like cracktastic catnip but the set up wasn’t my thing. YALL I WAS BUMMED FOR NO DAMN REASON CAUSE THIS BITCH WAS WROOOOONG!
Now book, get in my brain!
@M & M (or anyone who knows I guess?)
What’s a ‘gamma hero?’
@Chelle If I understand this correctly, he’s kind of a mix of both beta and alpha. The Perfect Hero as it were, LOL.
Thank you!
@Chelle and @Jacqueline: I may have this wrong, but I always thought gamma heroes were cold, calculating, and emotionally constipated (until they meet the heroine). More like anti-heroes. That’s what I always thought anyway, but I could be wrong. Maybe they are Omega heroes??
Anne Stuart’s heroes in the ice series are definitely on the aloof, morally questionable side.
🙂
@M & M You know, I think you’re right! That sounds more accurate than my thought. I swear our fandom needs an online dictionary sometimes lol.
@ Jacqueline: that would be very helpful!
