New Podcast Recommendation: Advice from Mom

Advice from Mom logo - an older photograph of I presume Mama B dressed for graduation I found a new podcast and wanted to tell y’all about it, because I suspect it will be relevant to your interests!

Advice from Mom is a new podcast featuring… advice. From a mom! I KNOW. SHOCKING. Rebecca Garza-Bortman is the host, along with her mom, “Momma B,” who is a psychologist.

The first episode I listened to was on Workplace advice, and it blew my mind. The questions and responses very thoughtful, especially to a question dealing with toxic work environments from a female who works in tech. Anyone who has experienced emotional abuse, workplace trauma, crises of confidence, or some scrappy post-job PTSD will find a lot of value, I think, in listening.

There are also guest second opinions, including one from Tim Federle, author of Better Nate than Ever ( A | K | AB | Authat was incredibly charming and warm. Plus, addressing the question of moving on from workplace trauma, there were guest opinions from two women who also work in the tech industry, Sadia Harper of Collective Health and Julie Mora-Blanco of Adobe.

The podcast archives also contain a five-part series about post-election advice, which I’m going to be listening to this week.

The second season of Unexplained is currently airing! It’s a podcast about things like time slips, mysterious deaths, aliens, cults, from a Scottish perspective. Production-wise, it reminds me a lot of Lore.

  2. Kris Bock says:

My favorite is still 99% Invisible which has short, well produced podcasts about design, using the term loosely (both good and bad architecture, airport signage, the diving bell, lost and forgotten places…) The topics are often fascinating. Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me is always fun too.

It wouldn’t have been called a podcast when it was produced, because the internet and things which make a podcast a podcast didn’t really exist, but I’ve been listening to a 55 hour long series, broken up into that number of episodes, of radio shows produced on pop music of the 50’s and 60’s, a musical topic which is straight up my street. It is a bit out of date, since it was produced in the 1960’s, but it is still interesting. It’s called the Pop Chronicles, and it was recently made available online at the University of North Texas, as part of their efforts to digitize the collections of John Gillyland, who produced this series, and donated his things to the library after his death. https://digital.library.unt.edu/explore/collections/JGPC/browse/?sort=title

Also, many of NPR’s shows are available to download. There are ones that one doesn’t often here on the radio, such as the All Songs Considered show, and my latest favorite is Jazz Profiles, a radio documentary series on the important people and places in Jazz History..

I’ve been listening to Guys We Fucked, the anti-slut shaming podcast. I’ve really been enjoying it, and it’s been making me think! I’d highly recommend it, though it isn’t safe for young ears or work!

  6. Tina from Texas says:

I have two recommendations, Missing Richard Simmons and Making Oprah, the first one is about Richard’s disappearance from society. A close friend of his made the podcast and I love it, as soon as the new episode is available I’m listening to it! If your a Oprah fan at all you will love Making Oprah, it gives you an inside look to the show from beginning to end. Being a long time Oprah fan it was right up my alley.

  7. Gingerly says:

I can’t squee enough about You Must Remember This a series of really well researched and engrossing podcast episodes on the theme of classic Hollywood. Karina Longworth who writes, researches and performs the show has ruined me for all other podcasts!

  8. Sarah says:

This sounds great. Particularly this episode. I’ve been listening to your podcast every morning before work and then again on the way home. I’m loving the recs, laugh out loud moments and also new podcasts to listen to. Thank you!
