  • Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

RECOMMENDEDDaughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor is $2.99! This is a YA fantasy with some romantic elements, and it’s the first in a series. I’ve heard so many good things about this book, and several friends compared it to a fairy tale. However, readers admit that it’s a tad confusing at the start, as they tried to get their footing in the story.

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”, she speaks many languages – not all of them human – and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

  • Kill Without Mercy

Kill Without Mercy by Alexandra Ivy

Kill Without Mercy by Alexandra Ivy is $1.99! This is a romantic suspense and the first in the ARES Security series. Readers warn that this suspense is not for the faint of heart as it has some pretty unsettling details of war and the past actions of a serial killer. However, many loved the band of heroes introduced. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads and the second book is also on sale!

From the hellhole of a Taliban prison to sweet freedom, five brave military heroes have made it home—and they’re ready to take on the civilian missions no one else can. Individually they’re intimidating. Together they’re invincible. They’re the men of ARES Security.

Rafe Vargas is only in Newton, Iowa, to clear out his late grandfather’s small house. As the covert ops specialist for ARES Security, he’s eager to get back to his new life in Texas. But when he crosses paths with Annie White, a haunted beauty with skeletons in her closet, he can’t just walk away—not when she’s clearly in danger…

There’s a mysterious serial killer on the loose with a link to Annie’s dark past. And the closer he gets, the deeper Rafe’s instinct to protect kicks in. But even with his considerable skill, Annie’s courage, and his ARES buddies behind him, the slaying won’t stop. Now it’s only a matter of time before Annie’s next—unless they can unravel a history of deadly lies that won’t be buried.

  • The Second Lie

The Second Lie by Anna Richland

The Second Lie by Anna Richland is 99c! This is the second book in her Immortal Vikings series and features a heroine who really wants to own a winery. Readers say this can be read as a standalone and they love the characters’ romp across Europe. But, a few readers felt confusion at some of the details

A woman desperate to achieve her dreams.

To reassure wealthy clients, Christina Alvarez Mancini invented a jet-setting British owner for her Napa Valley wine collection service. Success has brought her close to buying her own winery, when irregularities at a London wine auction threaten her business.

A man in love with a good plan.

Stig, an immortal Viking thief, knows he’s found the perfect role. The California woman who created his character won’t discover what he’s up to in England until after he’s pocketed the money he needs. Then Christina walks into the auction preview, ready to ruin his plans, and he knows his boredom has ended.

    Secrets that turn deadly.

By the end of the night, these two rivals must cooperate to escape kidnappers, British authorities, media and a pair of mysterious watchers. That’s when a game Stig’s played for a thousand years puts Christina’s life at risk.

Can two people whose identities are based on lies trust each other enough to survive?

  • Rise of the Rocket Girls

Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt

Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt is $2.99! Readers say this book is a great companion to Hidden Figures ( A | BN | K | AB ) and that they loved the author’s writing. However, if you’re buying the ebook, the images featured aren’t of the greatest quality.

The riveting true story of the women who launched America into space.

In the 1940s and 50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed quick-thinking mathematicians to calculate velocities and plot trajectories, they didn’t turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an elite group of young women who, with only pencil, paper, and mathematical prowess, transformed rocket design, helped bring about the first American satellites, and made the exploration of the solar system possible.

For the first time, Rise of the Rocket Girls tells the stories of these women–known as “human computers”–who broke the boundaries of both gender and science. Based on extensive research and interviews with all the living members of the team, Rise of the Rocket Girls offers a unique perspective on the role of women in science: both where we’ve been, and the far reaches of space to which we’re heading.

Shades of Remington Steele. Does the hero look like Pierce Brosnan?

  2. KristyD says:

@Sandra, I was wondering the same thing! Also, I think Henry Mancini composed the Remington Steele theme song, so maybe this is the author’s homage? I loved Remington Steele so I might try the book.

  3. Rebecca says:

I LOVE The Daughter of Smoke & Bone series. I’ve read them all. This is one of my all-time favorite series so I concur with your suggestion!

  4. Ginger says:

@Sandra and @KristyD I really liked this book and book 1 in the series. I’m hoping for a third. It’s absolutely worth 99¢!

  5. L. says:

The Mists of Avalon and The Pillars of the Earth are $1.99 over on Amazon. I highly recommend them both. Also recommend The Daughter of Smoke & Bone as above. I just can’t recommend the other books in the series. Blech.

  6. Ginger says:

To anyone thinking about The Second Lie…I loved it. And Anna Richland is donating her royalties from this quarter to charity, specifically the ACLU and the Northwest Immigrants Rights Project. If that doesn’t push you right over into buying it, I don’t know what will! Go one click now!

  7. Christine says:

I loved the Daughter of Smoke and Bones trilogy so much! Sometimes it was long winded and confusing, but I think she was good at world building and fantasy and it really captivated me when I read it.

  8. Caitlin says:

Like Christine I love the Daughter of Smoke and Bones trilogy so much so much so much. Holy cow I love those books. And I’m usually not even a little bit into anything angel-related, at all.

  9. cbackson says:

I really expected to be a fan of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but I just couldn’t connect with it. In particular, I didn’t like the plot twist…it cheapened the character for me (which is kind of all I can say without giving it away).

  10. LZ says:

I’m another Anna Richland fangirl. Strongly recommend all her books. If you buy them all today, start by reading “His Road Home.”
