A Natural History of Dragons
RECOMMENDED: A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan is $2.99! This is the first book in the Lady Trent series, which Carrie really loves. Readers say the book is pretty awesome in terms of concept, but they surprisingly wanted more dragons. Have you read this book or series?
You, dear reader, continue at your own risk. It is not for the faint of heart—no more so than the study of dragons itself. But such study offers rewards beyond compare: to stand in a dragon’s presence, even for the briefest of moments—even at the risk of one’s life—is a delight that, once experienced, can never be forgotten. . . .
All the world, from Scirland to the farthest reaches of Eriga, know Isabella, Lady Trent, to be the world’s preeminent dragon naturalist. She is the remarkable woman who brought the study of dragons out of the misty shadows of myth and misunderstanding into the clear light of modern science. But before she became the illustrious figure we know today, there was a bookish young woman whose passion for learning, natural history, and, yes, dragons defied the stifling conventions of her day.
Here at last, in her own words, is the true story of a pioneering spirit who risked her reputation, her prospects, and her fragile flesh and bone to satisfy her scientific curiosity; of how she sought true love and happiness despite her lamentable eccentricities; and of her thrilling expedition to the perilous mountains of Vystrana, where she made the first of many historic discoveries that would change the world forever.

As Old As Time
As Old As Time by Liz Braswell is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and the price hasn’t been matched just yet. This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and Redheadedgirl had this preordered back in September. Several readers thought the characters were a bit flat, but others felt this was the best book out of the Twisted Tales series so far.
What if Belle’s mother cursed the Beast?

The Vixen and the Vet
READER RECOMMENDED: The Vixen and the Vet by Katy Regnery is $2.99 at Amazon! This contemporary romance was nominated for a RITA® in the Long Contemporary category and is a Beauty & the Beast retelling. During the RITA® Reader Challenge, Reader Erica gave the book a B:
I really did enjoy the hell out of this book. I really did. I loved Asher. I liked Savannah, I felt like she and I would be buddies. I was rooting for them together and I fully believe in this happily-ever-after (*cough* even though it happens too quickly *cough*), and I’m sure out there in this fictional world, they are together and doing good things. This was not a magic hoo-ha cures your PTSD story, and for that I am grateful.
In this modern-retelling of “Beauty and the Beast,” Savannah Carmichael, betrayed by an unreliable source, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.
After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher’s hand and disfigured half of his face, he’s lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy…that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress with a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feeling things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn’t felt in years.
Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other’s hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they’ll have to decide if the love they found in one another’s arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.

Midnight Raider
Midnight Raider by Shelly Thacker is 99c! This is a historical romance with a heroine who dresses up as a highwayman. Helloooo, catnip! Some readers could not get behind the hero, but loved the heroine. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads and was originally published in the early 90s. Have you read this one?
He’s secretly a highwayman. So is she.
In London’s most glittering salons, she is lovely young widow Lady Elizabeth Barnes-Finchley. But by night, she rides as highwayman Blackerby Swift, seeking vengeance against the man who took from her all she once loved. Then a pistol shot on a moonlit heath brings her face-to-face with a rival highwayman: Marcus Worthington, darkly handsome, lethally dangerous–and determined to stop her.
A fallen-from-grace earl with a nefarious reputation, Marcus wants vengeance against the man responsible for his father’s death and his family’s ruin. Elizabeth is a clever, daring, enchanting obstacle in his path. The two outlaws reluctantly agree to join forces against their mutual enemy, but the odds are against both of them surviving the dangerous partnership–and falling in love was never part of the plan.

I adored the Lady Trent books. 😀 I dragged my feet a while reading them, but once I did, I gobbled them all up like tasty, tasty dragon-shaped candy. They played for me a lot like “Amelia Peabody with dragons”, since the overall love story is very heavily driven by Lady Trent’s life’s work of researching dragons, and the respect her eventual man has for her and her work.
I love the Lady Trent books, partly because they describe the actual work involved in wildlife research and partly because the more you see of Isabella in action, the better you like her. I thought the first book was a bit obvious in plot development but found the series developed from strength to strength. I particularly liked Isabella’s emotional development, including the dawning of her understanding of her sexuality, and her grappling with political authorities, issues of class and parenthood. And for extra scrumptiousness, there are the cover art and illustrations!
SBTB must be following me around. I’ve been on a ‘Beauty and the Beast’ kick all day, but I won’t get to see the live-action film until it comes out on DVD. I’m dying over here just thinking about it.
Heads up. The Vixen and the Vet is currently free on Amazon both in the US and Germany.
