Dirty

RECOMMENDED: Dirty by Kylie Scott is $1.99! For the most part, I liked this contemporary romance. It had a great blend of romance and humor. It has a great meet-cute and I spent a lot of last year’s RT line-waiting with my nose stuck in my Kindle to read it. I gave it a B+ in a Lightning Review.
The last thing Vaughan Hewson expects to find when he returns to his childhood home is a broken hearted bride in his shower, let alone the drama and chaos that comes with her.
Lydia Green doesn’t know whether to burn down the church or sit and cry in a corner. Discovering the love of your life is having an affair on your wedding day is bad enough. Finding out it’s with his best man is another thing all together. She narrowly escapes tying the knot and meets Vaughan only hours later.
Vaughan is the exact opposite of the picture perfect, respected businessman she thought she’d marry. This former musician-turned-bartender is rough around the edges and unsettled. But she already tried Mr. Right and discovered he’s all wrong-maybe it’s time to give Mr. Right Now a chance.
After all, what’s wrong with getting dirty?

The Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas is $2.99! I mentioned this book in the February 2016 Hide Your Wallet post and it was described as Jane Austen meets X-Men! Many readers loved the main character. However, there seem to be some complaints about the ending and its lack of resolution.
Evelyn has no interest in marriage and even the dashing Mr. Kent can’t make her want to live up to society’s expectations. She’d much rather assist her beloved sister Rose in becoming the world’s first female doctor. But everything changes the night she meets Sebastian Braddock – not only is the reclusive lord both vexing and surprisingly attractive, he’s also quite possibly mad, and his interest in Rose is galling. So when Evelyn wakes up to discover that Rose has disappeared, she immediately suspects Sebastian.
But then she discovers that Sebastian’s strange tales of special powers are actually true, and that Rose’s kidnappers have worse in mind for her than simply ruining her reputation. Surrounded by secrets, lies, and unprecedented danger, Evelyn has no choice but to trust Sebastian, yet she can’t help but worry that Sebastian’s secrets are the most dangerous of all…

The Naked Duke by Sally MacKenzie is $2.99! This is the first book in the Naked Nobility series. You can get all seven books in the series for less than $20! This book earned a D grade from Candy way back when, but she still found it lively, readable, and all sorts of crazy:
Despite the multitude of problems, a plot that doesn’t make much sense, the silliest villain I’ve ever encountered, a heroine who’s an annoying prig, a hero who’s nice enough but is pretty much unremarkable, and for the bonus round, a big honkin’ continuity mistake, the book was surprisingly readable.
The Surprise Of Her Life
Sophisticated. Scandalous. In fact, Miss Sarah Hamilton, a proper Philadelphian, finds London society altogether shocking. How can it be that she has awakened from her innocent slumber to find herself in bed next to a handsome–and exceedingly naked–man? The laughing onlookers standing in the doorway are no help whatsoever and surely this amorous lunatic cannot be a duke, as he claims. She is compromised–though she most certainly will not marry him!
The Sweetest Moment Of His
James, the Duke of Alford, is enchanted by his unexpected bedmate–and not at all afraid of her pink-cheeked fury. True, the circumstances and place of their meeting are most unusual, but the spirited American who’s pummeling him with a pillow is an incomparable beauty. If Sarah will only listen to his perfectly reasonable explanation, James is sure that he can capture her heart. . .forever.

A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan is $2.99.
Carrie S reviewed a later book in the series and gave it an A-. Overview from her review:
The Memoirs of Lady Trent series follows the adventures of Lady Isabella Trent, a naturalist in a world that closely resembles the Victorian Age in geography (all the countries have different names, but seem to be parallels of our own countries), politics, and social mores. In Isabella’s world, dragons are real. There are many different species across the world, and Isabella is devoted to studying and protecting them.
I bought the first Portland Storm anthology when it was on sale last time. I really liked the first book, but they all went downhill from there. I disliked the total lack of any sense of place in the series; Portland is a vibrant city, but the few times that any actual places were mentioned, they were touristy things like Voodoo Doughnuts. It made me wonder if the author had ever even been to Portland, or if she just Googled a few landmarks, watched an episode of Portlandia, and called it a day.
The other thing that I found really off-putting was a repeated theme that I decided to call “frumpiness is next to godliness.” I don’t know if there’s an actual trope related to this, but in these books, most if not all of the heroines dress very badly, and this is used as a sort of shorthand to show how much depth of character they have in comparison to the other wives and girlfriends who, with the exception of heroines from previous books, are universally portrayed as vain, shallow, and snobby (and you can tell because they put effort into their appearance! What a bunch of fake bitches!). I think it’s a weird sub-trope of “Not Like Other Girls,” and I find it so hypocritical because it’s just as superficial to judge somebody a bimbo because she dresses well as it is to think she’s beneath your notice because she doesn’t care about fashion. Can we please stop assigning moral value to clothes?
I’ll pipe up and agree on the lack of resolution & bad ending for “These Vicious Masks.” Overall, it was very meh to me.
I quite enjoyed “These Vicious Masks”. The lack of resolution/bad ending is understandable since the sequel, “These Ruthless Deeds”, comes out 3/14/17″.
I am not sure if this is available everywhere, but Groupon is has a deal for a free 60-day trial of Kindle Unlimited.
Kylie Scott is one of the few contemporary romance authors who can do the heroine only first person point-of-view really well. Dirty was fun and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
I loved the Stage Dive series but I couldn’t get into Dirty at all. Does anyone have experience any similar to Stage Dive rockstar romances they would recommend?
