A Curious Beginning

RECOMMENDED: A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn is $2.99 at Amazon! This is a historical mystery and Sarah really enjoyed it. She also immediately read the second one after finishing the first. Here’s what she said:
I read A Curious Beginning with an I-cannot-put-this-down enthusiasm and devoured it very quickly. I relished both the characters and the mystery. The Veronica Speedwell series is excellent and intelligent fun, and while the second isn’t quite as satisfying as the first, I heartily recommend them both.
In her thrilling new series, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries, returns once more to Victorian England…and introduces intrepid adventuress Veronica Speedwell.
London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.
But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

Rookie Move by Sarina Bowen is $2.99! This is book one in the Brooklyn Bruisers series about a hockey team. The second book, which Elyse loved, is discounted a couple bucks. Readers loved the second chance romance in this book, but found the pacing in the first half a big slow.
The first novel in a sexy new series featuring the hockey players of the Brooklyn Bruisers and the women who win their hearts—from the USA Today bestselling author of the Ivy Years series.
In high school they were the perfect couple—until the day Georgia left Leo in the cold…
Hockey player Leo Trevi has spent the last six years trying to do two things: get over the girl who broke his heart, and succeed in the NHL. But on the first day he’s called up to the newly franchised Brooklyn Bruisers, Leo gets checked on both sides, first by the team’s coach—who has a long simmering grudge, and then by the Bruisers’ sexy, icy publicist—his former girlfriend Georgia Worthington.
Saying goodbye to Leo was one of the hardest things Georgia ever had to do—and saying hello again isn’t much easier. Georgia is determined to keep their relationship strictly professional, but when a press conference microphone catches Leo declaring his feelings for her, things get really personal, really fast….

The Assistants by Camille Perri is $1.99! This is a Robin Hood-esque story set in the world of working women. Some readers mention you need a suspension of disbelief, given the apparent thievery. However, others like the anti-heroine feel to the main character. Have you read this one?
A wry and astute debut about a young Manhattanite whose embezzlement scam turns her into an unlikely advocate for the leagues of overeducated and underpaid assistants across the city.
Tina Fontana is the hapless but brazen thirty-year-old executive assistant to Robert Barlow, the all-powerful and commanding CEO of Titan Corp., a multinational media conglomerate. She’s excellent at her job and beloved by her famous boss—but after six years of making his reservations for restaurants she’d never get into on her own and pouring his drinks from bottles that cost more than her rent, she’s bored, broke, and just a bit over it all.
When a technical error with Robert’s travel-and-expenses report presents Tina with the opportunity to pay off the entire balance of her student loan debt with what would essentially be pocket change for her boss, she struggles with the decision: She’s always played by the rules. But it’s such a relatively small amount of money for the Titan Corporation—and for her it would be a life-changer . . .
The Assistants speaks directly to a new generation of women who feel stuck and unable to get ahead playing by the rules. It will appeal to all of those who have ever asked themselves, “How is it that after all these years, we are still assistants?”

Dark Currents by Jacqueline Carey is $2.99! This is the first book in the Agent of Hel urban fantasy series. Some readers mentioned that it took a while for the main character to grow on them, but by the end of the book, they were definitely won over. Have you read this series? I know Carey has been mentioned before in our comments.
The Midwestern resort town of Pemkowet boasts a diverse population: eccentric locals, wealthy summer people, and tourists by the busload; not to mention fairies, sprites, vampires, naiads, ogres and a whole host of eldritch folk, presided over by Hel, a reclusive Norse goddess.
To Daisy Johanssen, fathered by an incubus and raised by a single mother, it’s home. And as Hel’s enforcer and the designated liaison to the Pemkowet Police Department, it’s up to her to ensure relations between the mundane and eldritch communities run smoothly. But when a young man from a nearby college drowns—and signs point to eldritch involvement—the town’s booming paranormal tourism trade is at stake. Teamed up with her childhood crush, Officer Cody Fairfax, a sexy werewolf on the down-low, Daisy must solve the crime—and keep a tight rein on the darker side of her nature. For if she’s ever tempted to invoke her demonic birthright, it could accidentally unleash nothing less than Armageddon.

Also $2.99 today @ amazon,
His Wicked Reputation by Madeline Hunter (Book 1 in Wicked Trilogy)
Half-Resurrection Blues by Daniel José Older is $2.99 at Amazon, BN, Kobo, and GP. (I couldn’t find it on iTunes, but I never can!)
It’s under the auspices of Penguin, as are most things on my wish list, where they languish for eternity because Penguin doesn’t want me to have nice things at affordable prices, so don’t drag your feet if you want it.
Well, I nabbed that Raybourn book. Over the past week I have completely torpedoed my good intentions about reading down my TBR.
Big thumbs up for the Veronica Speedwell. I finished book two last week and it just gets better. Fun fact, Veronica & speedwell are two names for the same perennial with spiky purple flowers.
Although not as good of a price as $2.99 the second Veronica Speedwell title, A Perilous Undertaking, is $5.99 at Amazon. This title came out in early 2017.
@Ren Benton: We must have a similar wishlist. I waited two years for that book and finally bought it when Google Books offered me a signup discount. If not for that, I still wouldn’t have it. My list is now over 100 items, the expensive ones are all Big 5.
The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne (1st book) is $2.99 today at Amazon.
The Speedwell books are price matched at B&N. I checked because that’s where my gift card money is.
I really enjoyed The Assistants and have recommended it to friends. Agree you HAVE to suspend disbelief, but if you like snarky ‘anti-herones’ and disgruntled, millenial NYer humor I do recommend. It’s what’s happened to chicklit in the post GONE GIRL era.
On a side note, I read the hard cover edition and the cover was AWESOME– this ebook is the pic from the trade edition and it’s hideous! I hate when that happens.
“Hounded”, the first book in Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid series is on sale at Amazon and BN for $1.99. It’s deliciously addictive.
Also, minor rant: what is wrong with being an assistant? That final sentence in the synopsis of “The Assistants” sounds derisive to the profession. I’m an excellent Executive Assistant, and I’ve known some extraordinary ones. My boss, head of Sales for a $1b+ company, quite literally cannot do her job without me. A statement like this: ‘The Assistants speaks directly to a new generation of women who feel stuck and unable to get ahead playing by the rules. It will appeal to all of those who have ever asked themselves, “How is it that after all these years, we are still assistants?”’ pisses me off.
@LizM: I also have the hardcover edition and the cover is what made me grab it. The bright pink and minimalist design! <3
I’m not usually a fan of second chance stories (they tend to bum me out, and I’m familiar with the backstory from Trevi in the Ivy Years series), but I’m going to try to trust Sarina Bowen on this one. She rarely disappoints me. I am fighting with myself that $6 is too much for a non-mm book because the description of Hard Hitter makes me have all the grabby hands.
@LisaJo, preach on sister! I believe the complaint was that they weren’t making enough to support a NYC lifestyle. I kept thinking: how about asking for a raise? Followed by pointing out how much someone else would value your skills.
I love Sarina Bowen’s hockey series, and I can’t wait till the next one-it comes out in May, I believe.
In just the last few months I have been branching out into contemporary romances, I am usually all about the historical ones. But SBTB has opened my eyes to new options!
A Curious Beginning is now on sale on Kobo, for those who prefer epub.
Looks like Samhain books are 50% off, but just at Samhain’s site.
Ugh, I’m trying to talk myself out of $5.99 on Hard Hitter. I LOVE that book. Rookie Move is good, but Hard Hitter is amazing. I am probably not gonna hold out.
The Assistants sounds particularly good after a long day at work!
I was home sick yesterday, one clicked a curious beginning, and read it in one sitting. So good.
A Curious Beginning is $2.99 at Kobo as well.
@LisaJo885 and @DonnaMarie, I hear you on the Assistant thing. I am an Assistant myself. I don’t think its meant to be derogatory to people who find themselves in these jobs, the complaint is more with the chronic underpayment combined with crushing student debt, and crippling cost of living–meanwhile your work week is dedicated to making a wealthy man look good and get wealthier. Guess, I’m bringing a bit of my own life into this . . . lol.
