  • It Happened One Wedding

It Happened One Wedding by Julie James

RECOMMENDEDIt Happened One Wedding Sarah really enjoyed this book and gave it an A- by Julie James is $1.99! . She felt the ending was a bit abrupt, but that seemed to be her only complaint. She also really loved the heroine:

I love the heroine, Sidney, because she is strong, she is confident, and she is competent, and she knows all those things about herself. Moreover, even though she went through a humiliating breakup that crumpled her a bit, she’s determined to start over, and find someone right for her. And she never entertains the idea that she’s doing it wrong, or that she shouldn’t be openly pursuing the possibility of a long term relationship.

SHE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO SAY “I DO”

After a humiliating end to her engagement, investment banker Sidney Sinclair is done with commitment-phobic men. But when her sister winds up engaged after a whirlwind courtship, she’s thrown in to close contact with exactly the kind of sexy playboy she wants to avoid—the gorgeous best man. She’s stuck with him, for better or worse, until her sister walks down the aisle, but that doesn’t mean she has to give in to his smooth advances, no matter how tempting they are…

BUT HE MAKES IT HARD TO SAY “I DON’T”

Special Agent Vaughn Roberts always gets his man on the job and his woman in bed. So Sidney’s refusal to fall for his charms only makes him more determined to win over the cool and confident redhead. Only what starts out as a battle of wills ends up as a serious play for her heart. Because the one woman who refuses to be caught may be the only one Vaughn can’t live without…

  • Burn Down the Night

Burn Down the Night by Molly O'Keefe

RECOMMENDEDBurn Down the Night by M. O’Keefe is $1.99! This book has been recommended many times, specifically because of the heroine. It was even recommended as part of author Bree Bridges tweet thread on angry heroines. Some readers recommend reading the previous two books in the series, as you get more of an introduction to the heroine as a secondary character. Thoughts on whether this can be read as a standalone?

A battle for control turns explosive as a beautiful con woman takes a bad-boy biker hostage in this edgy, seductive novel set in the world of Everything I Left Unsaid (“Toe-curlingly sensual.”—Katy Evans) and The Truth About Him (“Absolutely one-click worthy”—J. Kenner).

The only thing that matters to me is rescuing my sister from the drug-cooking cult that once enslaved us both. I’ve run cons my whole life, and I’ll use my body to get whatever I need. Max Daniels is the last connection I have to that world, the one person reckless enough to get involved. Besides, now that his brothers have turned on him, he needs me too.

The deal was supposed to be simple: a place to hide in exchange for rescuing my sister. Now he’s my prisoner. Totally at my mercy. But I’m the one captivated. Enthralled. Doing everything he asks of me until I’m not sure who’s in control.

We both crave the heat. The more it hurts, the better. But what if Max wants a different life now, to leave the game . . . to love me? I thought I knew better than to get burned. Now I’m in too deep to pull away. And the crazy thing is . . . I don’t want to.

  • Only You

Only You by Denise Grover Swank

Only You by Denise Grover Swank is 99c! Elyse did a Lightning Review of this book and gave it a C-, citing a pretty frustrating and agonizing secondary character. However, she also notes that there are readers who would really like this book:

There’s a lot of reasons why readers will like this book. The romance is hot and funny, there’s a ton of home renovation/HGTV pr0n, and Kevin adopts a tiny kitten he finds. Plus the relationship between Holly and her grandma, and the subject of dealing with dementia, was genuine and well-done.

If Nicole hadn’t been in this book I would have given it a B+, as it was, whenever she was on the page I wanted to punch her.

    Never say never . . .

Romance isn’t an option for Holly Greenwood. With her wedding planner career on the line she needs to stay focused, and that means pleasing her demanding boss, not getting distracted by her mind-alteringly hot neighbor . . .

Ex-Marine Kevin Vandemeer craves normalcy. Instead, he has a broken-down old house in need of a match and some gasoline, a meddling family, and the uncanny ability to attract the world’s craziest women. At least that last one he can fix: he and his buddies have made a pact to swear off women, and this includes his sweetly sexy new neighbor.

After one hot night that looks a whole lot like a disaster in the light of day, Kevin and Holly are about to learn that true love doesn’t play by the rules . . .

  • Run to You

Run to You by Rachel Lacey

Run to You by Rachel Lacey is $1.99! This is the first book in the Risking It All series, which features a small town romance, meddling secondary characters, and a fake relationship. Readers really liked the interaction between the hero and heroine, but some felt the action dragged a bit in the middle. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

ONE LITTLE LIE. A WHOLE LOTTA TROUBLE.

Moments after meeting the most gorgeous guy ever, Gabby Winters promptly gets stung by a zillion yellowjackets and falls-not gracefully-into a stream. Yup, Ethan Hunter is trouble with a capital “hot,” and Gabby definitely needs to keep her distance. Except in the small town of Haven, there’s nowhere to hide from Ethan’s sexy, infectious grin . . . and all the residents are conspiring against her.

At the center of the town’s matchmaking is Ethan’s grandmother, who’s convinced their relationship is a done deal. Rather than break her heart, Gabby and Ethan find themselves cornered into pretending to be falling in love. The problem: there’s serious sizzling attraction between them. And if this charade continues, they won’t fool just the entire town – they might fool themselves too . . .

  1. Ren Benton says:

I’ve had that O’Keefe on my wish list for a while and snapped it up this morning.

The Kindle Daily Deals today are textbooks. Some, as I’m sure you can imagine, are still quite spendy, but half of them are $1.99. Among the cheap ones are French, Spanish, Italian, public speaking, math, science, electronics, appliance repair, home inspection, the AP guide to photojournalism, and on and on. If you made a “learn something new” resolution or simply hoard seemingly random research materials (c’est moi!), the selection may be worth checking out.

  2. kkw says:

I always love Julie James. Molly O’Keefe can go either way for me, I’ve definitely loved some but not all of the ones I’ve read. That one looks irresistibly crazy, even if it is first person narration.

  3. DonnaMarie says:

If you haven’t snapped up the Julie James yet, you need to stop what you’re doing and go snap it up RIGHT NOW!!!! It is absolutely, unequivocally the gold standard for contemporary romance. From competency porn to engaging main characters to a deftly handled secondary cast to the way she captures Chicago as not just a setting, but a character in its own right – right up to including a 100% true to life emergency plane landing. You need this book!!

Also the feels for Burn Down The Night. It is a true testament to a writer’s ability when she can use tropes you dislike and the book is still make you late for work addicting. Do you need to read the first two books? Not really. Like any book written about sequel bait, your experience of the characters is some what fuller, but it isn’t necessary. All the action takes place outside the events of the other books. Still, the first two books are soooo freaking good, why would you punish yourself by not reading them?

  4. Carol S says:

I just discovered Julie James through the wonder that is SBTB and am working my way through her books. This shocks me (SHOCKS ME, I TELL YOU) because I am a lawyer and I usually find law-related books either annoying (“That would NEVER happen in real life”) or not relaxing to read. I usually read historical, too, so this has been a fun jaunt through some contemporaries.

  5. mejdu says:

I love “It Happened One Wedding.” I first learned about it here, and it is a total delight. It rereads well, too, even though I wish I could read again for the first time.
