  • Because of Miss Bridgerton

Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn is $2.99! I know Quinn is an autobuy author for a lot of people and Carrie did a Lightning Review for this particular title. She said:

If you like the other Bridgerton books, you will probably like this one just fine. Just don’t expect anything terribly new or different.

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places…

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband… someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should…

    Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he’s arrogant, annoying, and she’s absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can’t stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor…

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can’t abide is the one person they can’t live without…

  • The Bees

    The Bees by Laline Paull

RECOMMENDEDThe Bees by Laline Paull is $1.99! I LOVED this book. Margaret Atwood, whom I worship like a saint, tweeted about the book, calling it a mix between a Cinderella story and an Arthurian tale. I knew I had to read it. On GoodReads, I gave it a 4-star rating and a mini review:

This book was unlike anything I’ve read before, and I found it both unique and mesmerizing. However, the last fifty pages seemed to lack the care and craft of the ones before it. The ending was over in a rush and I felt Flora’s story should have continued on with more detail. Regardless, I was impressed with Paull’s storytelling and her ability to make bee life interesting.

The Handmaid’s Tale meets The Hunger Games in this brilliantly imagined debut set in an ancient culture where only the queen may breed and deformity means death.

Flora 717 is a sanitation worker, a member of the lowest caste in her orchard hive where work and sacrifice are the highest virtues and worship of the beloved Queen the only religion. But Flora is not like other bees. With circumstances threatening the hive’s survival, her curiosity is regarded as a dangerous flaw but her courage and strength are an asset. She is allowed to feed the newborns in the royal nursery and then to become a forager, flying alone and free to collect pollen. She also finds her way into the Queen’s inner sanctum, where she discovers mysteries about the hive that are both profound and ominous.

But when Flora breaks the most sacred law of all—daring to challenge the Queen’s fertility—enemies abound, from the fearsome fertility police who enforce the strict social hierarchy to the high priestesses jealously wedded to power. Her deepest instincts to serve and sacrifice are now overshadowed by an even deeper desire, a fierce maternal love that will bring her into conflict with her conscience, her heart, her society—and lead her to unthinkable deeds.

Thrilling, suspenseful and spectacularly imaginative, The Bees gives us a dazzling young heroine and will change forever the way you look at the world outside your window.

  • Love on My Mind

Love on My Mind by Tracey Livesay

RECOMMENDED: Love on My Mind by Tracey Livesay is 99c! The heroine is amazing and I really loved her characterization. So much competence porn! However, some readers felt the details about software development were inaccurate. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Successful PR executive Chelsea Grant is one assignment away from making partner at her firm and nothing will stand in her way. Her big break? Turn a reclusive computer genius into a media darling in time for his new product launch. He may have been dubbed the “sexiest geek alive” but he has no patience for the press—and it shows. Piece of cake, right? Only problem is… his company doesn’t want him to know they hired her.

After a disastrous product launch two years ago, tech CEO Adam Bennett knows the success of his new device depends on the media’s support. When a twist of fate brings the beautiful PR specialist to his door, Adam hires Chelsea to help turn his image around. Their attraction is undeniable and the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to keep things professional.

But when Adam discovers Chelsea’s deception, will she risk everything for her career or is love the real thing on her mind?

  • Once Upon a Rose

Once Upon a Rose by Laura Florand

Once Upon a Rose by Laura Florand is 99c on Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is the first book in the La Vie en Roses contemporary romance series and is set in France. Some readers thought this was all sorts of adorable and squee-worthy. But some found it was a bit too cutesy for their liking. Have you read this one?

    She stole his roses.

Fleeing the spotlight, burnt out rock star Layla—“Belle”—Dubois seeks refuge in the south of France. That old, half-forgotten heritage in a valley of roses seems like a good place to soothe a wounded heart. She certainly doesn’t expect the most dangerous threat to her heart to pounce on her as soon as she sets foot on the land.

    He wants them back.

Matt didn’t mean to growl at her quite that loudly. But—his roses! She can’t have his roses. Even if she does have all those curls and green eyes and, and, and…what was he growling about again?

Or maybe he just wants her.

When an enemy invades his valley and threatens his home, heart, and livelihood, Matthieu Rosier really knows only one way to defend himself.

    It might involve kissing.

And that might be just the start.

  1. Ren Benton says:

As long as it’s referenced in The Bees, heads up that The Handmaid’s Tale is a KDD for $1.99. (Currently $2.99 at BN, Google, and Kobo. Who knows about Apple? I can’t even find books in that place without a direct link. Grr.)

  2. Jen says:

I love Once Upon a Rose. Matt is a giant growly teddy bear and he is freaking adorable. Plus, France, perfume, wine, food…love it.

  3. Kilian Metcalf says:

I loved the bees. Her research was impeccable, which meant egregious errors didn’t get in the way of my enjoying the story. Her take on the drones was particularly amusing, but all of it was good.

  4. Hera says:

I picked up Miss Bridgerton last night and I feel like even the sale price isnt worth it, because I’m 11% in and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. So far it’s entirely weakly witty banter and infodumping. Julia Quinn has a way of spinning very little substance into a whole book, and of oversharing her characters’ every thought. She needs a hiatus to recharge and a better editor, because this is all quantity of words and no quality of story, much like her last few books. I used to love her, but these days I get the impression that she either doesn’t really care anymore or that she doesn’t have a high opinion of her readers’ intelligence.

  5. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

I enjoyed Love on my Mind. It was a very sweet story and well written. You do have to suspend your belief when it comes to tech industry marketing, aquariums and Bay Area geography.
