Labyrinth Lost
RECOMMENDED: Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, so get it while you can! Sarah read this book a couple months ago and gave it a B grade:
Overall, I think this book contains a fabulous world with a terrific, galloping adventure through a vivid and wrenching underworld. While I was reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. But the story has most of its strength in the plot and the world-building than in the characters and their emotional development and consistency, and I missed those aspects even while I enjoyed the rest.
Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.
I fall to my knees. Shattered glass, melted candles and the outline of scorched feathers are all that surround me. Every single person who was in my house – my entire family — is gone.
Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange markings on his skin.
The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland…
Beautiful Creatures meets Daughter of Smoke and Bone with an infusion of Latin American tradition in this highly original fantasy adventure.

An Ember in the Ashes
RECOMMENDED: An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir is $1.99! This is also another Kindle Daily Deal and was recommended on a podcast episode with Lia from Lia’s Bookish Obsession. Some readers found it boring, but there are many reviews on Goodreads that are firing off the squee cannons. Have you read this one?
I WILL TELL YOU THE SAME THING I TELL EVERY SLAVE.
THE RESISTANCE HAS TRIED TO PENETRATE THIS SCHOOL COUNTLESS TIMES. I HAVE DISCOVERED IT EVERY TIME.
IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH THE RESISTANCE, IF YOU CONTACT THEM, IF YOU THINK OF CONTACTING THEM, I WILL KNOW
AND I WILL DESTROY YOU.
Laia is a slave.
Elias is a soldier.
Neither is free.Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.
It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.
But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.
There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Gambled Away
Gambled Away is 99c at Amazon! This is a historical romance anthology with European and American settings, from some great authors. Like with most anthologies, some readers had issues with the romances being novella-length, but others loved the variety of the collection. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.
Get revenge. Pay a debt. Save a soul. Lose your heart.
Spanning centuries and continents, five brand-new novellas from beloved historical romance authors tell the stories of men and women who find themselves wagered in a game of chance and are forced to play for the highest stakes of all: love.
“Gideon and the Den of Thieves” by Joanna Bourne
London, 1793 – Soldier of fortune Gideon Gage has come home from halfway around the world, fully prepared to face down a ruthless gang to save his sister. But there’s one member of the gang he could never have been prepared for: fascinating Aimée, driven from her own home by the French Revolution and desperately in need of his help.
“Raising The Stakes” by Isabel Cooper
California, 1938 — When the flute she won in last night’s poker game unexpectedly summons an elven warrior bound to her service, two-bit con artist Sam takes quick advantage. With Talathan’s fairy powers at her command, her shakedown of a crooked preacher is a sure thing…but would she rather take a gamble on love?
“All or Nothing” by Rose Lerner
England, 1819 – Architect Simon Radcliffe-Gould needs someone to pose as his mistress so he can actually get some work done at a scandalous house party. Irrepressible gambling den hostess Maggie da Silva would rather be his mistress, but she’ll take what she can get…
“The Liar’s Dice” by Jeannie Lin
Tang Dynasty China, 849 A.D. — Lady Bai’s first taste of freedom brings her face to face with murder. A dangerous and enigmatic stranger becomes her closest ally as she investigates the crime, but can she trust her heart or her instincts when everyone is playing a game of liar’s dice?
“Redeemed” by Molly O’Keefe
Denver, 1868 — After agonizing years in the Civil War’s surgical tents, Union doctor James Madison has nothing left to lose. But when beautiful, tortured Helen Winters is the prize in a high-stakes game of poker, he goes all in to save her—and maybe his own soul.

Stich ‘n Bitch
RECOMMENDED: Stitch ‘n Bitch by Debbie Stoller is $1.99! This is the book that taught me how to knit. It’s easily to follow along and has some easy, fun projects. If you already have this book, the rest of the books in the Stitch ‘n Bitch series are on sale for $1.99 each!
Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.
In Stitch ‘n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch ‘n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch ‘n Bitch group.

I really liked An Ember in the Ashes but I did listen to the audiobook rather than read the text.
I might get that knitting book since I have been trying to teach myself for years.
Knitting etiquette? What the heck is that?
To LML
Knitting etiquette off the t of my head.
1. Alsways say admiring things about a new knitters project.
2. Learn polite way to tell people to get lost when they mention that they can buy a sweater at Walmart.
3. Ask before knitting in a social setting where you are the only knitter.
4. Ask if yarn bought from outside the store is ok to bring to a knitting group sponsored by a yarn store. Often these groups are hosted to drive sales of their yarn.
To Nina.
Yours are considerate thoughts. Mine were traveling along the lines of refraining from using the sharp pointy object already in hand to stab someone who says rude things about your knitting.
Just starting to teach myself how to knit using “Knitty Gritty” and You-Tube videos. Stitch n’ Bitch should be a good second resource to use on the Fire Tablet (so I can actually see stuff). It is FRUSTRATING, oh boy howdy.
Status Update by Annabeth Albert is $1 right now. It’s MM, and a very cute story. It’s the first in a series of standalones.
I’ve been reading Gambled Away, and so far every story in it has been excellent!
Stich n’ Bitch is the book that taught me how to knit 12 years ago. It didn’t quite click for me until I got that book, and I can’t begin to recommend it enough.
Today’s Audible Daily Deal is Hamilton: The Revolution in case you need something to listen to between the cast album and the new mixtape. 😀
I recommend Gambled Away, though I wouldn’t’ve said no to longer stories. But sometimes you need bite-sized.
Also, I might’ve 1-clicked on some Stitch ‘n Bitch books…
I liked An Ember In The Ashes, but was less keen on book 2, A Torch Against The Night – there seemed to be lots of brutality and not much actual plot movement. The author’s website indicates there’s at least 2 more books to come in the series and frankly I’m not sure that I care to keep reading that long to find out how it all gets resolved.
I’ve been knitting for 50 years and would definitely recommend Stitch n’ Bitch as a first knitting book. Her hoodie is a wonderful first sweater. I would highly recommend that buy your yarn from a yarn shop and invest in a beginners class. Yes it will be comparatively expensive but it includes the combined expertise of everyone who works and shops there. My favorite blog for inspiration is Yarn Harlot. Inspired by Stephanie I also knit 25 tiny things as Christmas tree ornaments for my grandchildren.
