  • Lab Girl

    Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren is $3.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. The KDD today features Goodreads Choice Awards finalists and there are some pretty awesome selections, if you want to check out the sales! Many readers loved this memoir, but warn that the audio version is a little too dramatic.

An illuminating debut memoir of a woman in science; a moving portrait of a longtime friendship; and a stunningly fresh look at plants that will forever change how you see the natural world

Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she’s studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book is a revelatory treatise on plant life—but it is also so much more.

    Lab Girl
is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren’s remarkable stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom’s labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science, and learned to perform lab work done “with both the heart and the hands”; and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work.

Yet at the core of this book is the story of a relationship Jahren forged with a brilliant, wounded man named Bill, who becomes her lab partner and best friend. Their sometimes rogue adventures in science take them from the Midwest across the United States and back again, over the Atlantic to the ever-light skies of the North Pole and to tropical Hawaii, where she and her lab currently make their home.

Jahren’s probing look at plants, her astonishing tenacity of spirit, and her acute insights on nature enliven every page of this extraordinary book. Lab Girl opens your eyes to the beautiful, sophisticated mechanisms within every leaf, blade of grass, and flower petal. Here is an eloquent demonstration of what can happen when you find the stamina, passion, and sense of sacrifice needed to make a life out of what you truly love, as you discover along the way the person you were meant to be.

  • A Study in Charlotte

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro is $1.99! This only seems to be available at Amazon, so I’m hoping the sale doesn’t disappear on me. Some readers liked the spin of reading about Holmes & Watson’s descendants. However, others found the characterizations weren’t terribly deep in relating to their predecessors.

The last thing Jamie Watson wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut prep school just an hour away from his estranged father. But that’s not the only complication: Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective’s great-great-great-granddaughter, who has inherited not only Sherlock’s genius but also his volatile temperament. From everything Jamie has heard about Charlotte, it seems safer to admire her from afar.

From the moment they meet, there’s a tense energy between them, and they seem more destined to be rivals than anything else. But when a Sherringford student dies under suspicious circumstances, ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Jamie can no longer afford to keep his distance. Jamie and Charlotte are being framed for murder, and only Charlotte can clear their names. But danger is mounting and nowhere is safe—and the only people they can trust are each other.

  • Hope Flames

    Hope Flames by Jaci Burton

RECOMMENDED: Hope Flames by Jaci Burton is $1.99! This is the first book in the contemporary romance Hope series. Elyse read this one and it earned a B grade:

I don’t normally read small-town romances like Hope Flames by Jaci Burton. I prefer steamy, urban contemporaries. I picked this up because I like Burton as an author and because PUPPIES! The hero of this book is a police officer with a police dog named Boomer. The heroine is a vet with a pit-bull puppy named Annie and a lab named Daisy.

Hope Flames was light and fun and a nice break from the angsty stuff I’ve been reading. And also PUPPIES!

Thirty-two and finally setting up her veterinary practice in the town she once called home, Emma Burnett is on her own and loving it. Independent and driven, she’s not letting any man get in the way of her dreams. Not again.

That’s fine with Luke McCormack. Divorced and hardly lacking in female company when he needs it, he’s devoted to the only faithful companion in his life–his police dog. Still, there’s something about Emma he can’t shake.

When a series of local break-ins leaves Emma vulnerable, she seeks help from the first man to spark her desire in years. And now they’re giving each other something they thought they’d lost forever…hope.

  • Denial

    Denial by Lisa Renee Jones

Denial by Lisa Renee Jones is 99c at select vendors! This is a contemporary romance with some darker, suspenseful elements. The description is pretty vague, so here’s what I’ve gleaned from Goodreads. The heroine has amnesia. The hero is part of some underground group that isn’t quite a criminal organization. There’s some Beauty & the Beast elements. And there’s a cliffhanger. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.

Ella Ferguson awakes alone in Italy, unsure of who she is, and a gorgeous man has claimed her as his own. He’s tall, dark, and sexy, with money and power, the kind of man who makes a girl want to be possessed. And he does possess her, whispering wicked wonderful promises to her, stealing her trust and her heart. Soon though, the past finds her, yanking her from a cocoon of passion and safety. Everything is not how it seems. The truth will shatter her world, but it can set her free, if it doesn’t destroy her first.

  1. Linda says:

I was really excited by A Study in Charlotte for a second since I jumped to thinking it was a lesbian Sherlock Holmes (which might be one of my fondest dreams) but it looks like it is just YA?

I was really excited by A Study in Charlotte for a second since I jumped to thinking it was a lesbian Sherlock Holmes (which might be one of my fondest dreams) but then I realized that Jamie was a dude.

  3. Linda says:

Oh no sorry for the double post. (She says as she posts a third time.)

  4. Katie Lynn says:

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal includes the winners of the Goodreads Choice awards, so some of the best/highest likes books of this year. I picked up Beard Science by Penny Reid for $1.99, which normally is $6. I just finished the first book from this series, Truth or Beard, which *might* still be free. It was very funny and they’re better written than her knitting in the city books.

  5. Kate says:

I just finished A Study in Charlotte and found it pretty meh. Both of the main characters were bland and the mystery did not hold my interest. I also was disappointed in the direction the relationship between Sherlock and Watson took.

  6. vannah says:

I saw the following book on sale today at Amazon:

Storm and Silence (Storm and Silence Saga Book 1)
    Robert Thier

Anyone heard of it. It’s usually 4.99 but on sale today for 1.99.

  7. Lora says:

I’m with Linda. I could have gone for a prep school lesbian Holmes/Watson but not some bland ya one. Meh.

  8. cleo says:

Riptide’s having a year end sale – selected titles are $2.99 – http://www.riptidepublishing.com/end-of-2016/299. They tend to be pricy so this is a good sale. Good chance to pick up some of the LGBTQ+ books recommended and/or reviewed here lately.

  9. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

I got Truth or Beard when it was free earlier this month and didn’t love it. But I liked Cletus enough, despite that awful name, to shell out $1.99 for his book.

  10. Melinda says:

I really liked Truth or Beard but was intrigued by Cletus so I’m looking forward to the Beard Science book I picked up on sale.
I’ve heard good things about Robert Thier so I picked up that too.

  11. jmom says:

You had me at PUPPIES! I don’t read many small town romances – usually too Hallmarkish – but I’ll look into almost any book with a dog on the cover. I get very pissed when the dog barely figures in the story, but, police dog, vet with dogs – I’m already hooked.

  12. Vasha says:

The Riptide $2.99 sale has Top to Bottom by Delphine Dryden, f/f romance — Dryden writes good kink-centered stories and this is no exception. I thought Amie, the world-weary sadist, was a really interesting and attaching character.

Also at Riptide, Hammer and Bone by Kirby Crow, which I’ve heard good things about though I haven’t read it. Dark gaslight fantasy, not romance.
