  • Furiously Happy

    Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

RECOMMENDED: Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is $3.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched at other sites, so we’re starting off strong! Elyse loved this book and how it helped her deal with chronic pain. She gave it an A:

Furiously Happy is a rare book, a combination of ridiculous humor and poignant reflection. I think anyone who has suffered from a stigmatized illness will identify with Lawson’s honest, sometimes heartbreaking, description of her own pain. It’s still an uplifting book though, and that’s important. Lawson believes in celebrating small victories and quiet bravery. I get that. Sometimes you’re proud because hey, you got out of bed and showered today but you can’t post that on Facebook because other people don’t get it (and you’ll get shitty comments “Wow, I trained for my half marathon and worked 12 hours.” NOBODY CARES, GARY).

For fans of David Sedaris, Tina Fey, and Mindy Kaling-the new book from Jenny Lawson, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

In Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Jenny Lawson baffled readers with stories about growing up the daughter of a taxidermist. In her new book,Furiously Happy, Jenny explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. And terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

According to Jenny: “Some people might think that being ‘furiously happy’ is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he’s never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos.”

“Most of my favorite people are dangerously fucked-up but you’d never guess because we’ve learned to bare it so honestly that it becomes the new normal. Like John Hughes wrote in The Breakfast Club, ‘We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.’ Except go back and cross out the word ‘hiding.'”

Jenny’s first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, was ostensibly about family, but deep down it was about celebrating your own weirdness.Furiously Happy is a book about mental illness, but under the surface it’s about embracing joy in fantastic and outrageous ways-and who doesn’t need a bit more of that?

  • Charged

    Charged by Jay Crownover

Charged by Jay Crownover is $1.99! This is an opposites attract contemporary romance and I picked this for a previous Hide Your Wallet. Readers seemed to be split on the heroine. Many loved her bad girl attitude, while others found her hard to like. This book has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the second installment in the Saints of Denver series featuring a bad girl and a by the book attorney who could be her salvation…or her ruin.

Avett Walker and Quaid Jackson’s worlds have no reason to collide. Ever. Quaid is a high powered criminal attorney as slick as he is handsome. Avett is a pink-haired troublemaker with a bad attitude and a history of picking the wrong men.

When Avett lands in a sea of hot water because of one terrible mistake, the only person who can get her out of it is the insanely sexy lawyer. The last thing on earth she wants to do is rely on the no-nonsense attorney who thinks of her as nothing more than a nuisance. He literally has her fate in his hands. Yet there is something about him that makes her want to convince him to loosen his tie and have a little fun…with her.

Quaid never takes on clients like the impulsive young woman with a Technicolor dye job. She could stand to learn a hard lesson or two, but something about her guileless hazel eyes intrigues him. Still, he’s determined to keep their relationship strictly business. But doing so is becoming more impossible with each day he spends with her.

As they work side-by-side, they’ll have to figure out a way to get along and keep their hands off each other—because the chemistry between them is beyond charged.

  • In Safe Hands

In Safe Hands by Katie Ruggle

In Safe Hands by Katie Ruggle is 99c at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is the fourth book in the Search and Rescue series. Elyse loved the first book, Hold Your Breath, and that one is also on sale for $1.99! The heroine is agoraphobic and readers loved seeing her with the hero. However, others mentioned this book seemed different than the earlier ones with the series; it has a more thriller feel to it rather than romantic suspense.

    He was her hero,
But one wrong move ended their future before it could begin.
Now he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe,
Even if that means turning against one of his own.

As a member of the Field County Sheriff’s Department, Chris Jennings is used to having it rough. The Colorado Rockies aren’t for the weak-of-spirit, but he’s devoted his life to upholding the law-and to protecting the one woman he knows he can never have. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Daisy Little has lived in agoraphobic terror for over eight years. Trapped within a prison of her own making, she watches time pass through her bedroom window. Daisy knows she’ll never be a part of the world…until the day she becomes the sole witness of a terrible crime that may finally tear the Search & Rescue brotherhood apart for good.

In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…

  • Not My Father’s Son

Not My Father’s Son by Alan Cumming

Not My Father’s Son by Alan Cumming is $1.99! This is a highly recommended memoir and readers say that if you didn’t want to give Alan Cumming a hug before, you’ll want to give him one after you finish this book. However, others felt the memoir started off strong, but their interest lapsed during the second half. Have you read this one?

In his unique and engaging voice, the acclaimed actor of stage and screen shares the emotional story of his complicated relationship with his father and the deeply buried family secrets that shaped his life and career.

A beloved star of stage, television, and film—“one of the most fun people in show business” (Time magazine)—Alan Cumming is a successful artist whose diversity and fearlessness is unparalleled. His success masks a painful childhood growing up under the heavy rule of an emotionally and physically abusive father—a relationship that tormented him long into adulthood.

When television producers in the UK approached him to appear on a popular celebrity genealogy show in 2010, Alan enthusiastically agreed. He hoped the show would solve a family mystery involving his maternal grandfather, a celebrated WWII hero who disappeared in the Far East. But as the truth of his family ancestors revealed itself, Alan learned far more than he bargained for about himself, his past, and his own father.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as a film, television, and theater star. At times suspenseful, deeply moving, and wickedly funny, Not My Father’s Son will make readers laugh even as it breaks their hearts.

I can’t help but laugh at the cover for Charged. The pose and the bored look on her face is like…

“*record scratch* *freeze frame* Yep, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I got into this situation.”

  2. @Amanda says:

    @Dora: You’re amazing.

  3. Add me to the Dora love!

Alan Cumming… no words. Except all of them. He’s so fabulous and yes I need to snatch this book.

Also, his narrations of Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan trilogy is so amazing, I can’t express how much. Go. Listen. Enjoy.

  4. Lostshadows says:

Autocorrect seems to have changed “hug” to “huge” in the description of the Alan Cumming book. (At least, I hope that’s what happened.)

  5. Darlynne says:

Jenny Lawson is brilliant, an overused-but-spot-on word to describe her many talents. In addition to reading her books, I subscribe to her newsletter and continuously marvel at her writing and fabulously terrible ideas.

  6. Darlynne says:

@Darlynne: I think I meant “continually,” although either might work.

    @Lostshadows: Haha! Fixed, thank you!
