Blood Kiss

Blood Kiss by J.R. Ward is $1.99! This is the first book in the spinoff paranormal romance series, Black Dagger Legacy. Fans of the original Black Dagger Brotherhood say it’s a good addition to the world, but it doesn’t hold the same excitement as the original series. Have you read this one?
The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in a spin-off series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author…
Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.
And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated–and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

The Game and the Governess by Kate Noble is $1.99! Sarah said she’s a big fan of Noble’s writing, whether it’s The Librarians or The Lizzie Bennet Diaries or historical romance. She reviewed this book back when it came out and gave it a B-. It’s not her favorite of Noble’s books, but she says it’s as thoughtful and as memorable:
The Game and the Governess is a thoughtful, intricate novel that deals very heavily with privilege, especially the privilege of the hero. The description that’s part of the cover copy says it best, I think: Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice.
That’s pretty accurate.
Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice in this sexy, saucy romance—first in a new series from the author of YouTube sensation The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.
Three friends. One Wager. Winner takes all.
The Earl—‘Lucky Ned’ Ashby. Pompous, preening, certain that he is beloved by everyone.
The Miller—John Turner. Proud, forced to work as the Earl’s secretary, their relationship growing ever more strained.
The Doctor—Rhys Gray. Practical, peace-loving, but caught in the middle of two warring friends.Their wager is simple: By trading places with John Turner and convincing someone to fall in love with him, Ned plans to prove it’s him the world adores, not his money. Turner plans to prove him wrong.
But no one planned on Phoebe Baker, the unassuming governess who would fall into their trap, and turn everything on its head…

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray is $1.99! This is a historically-set, fantasy YA novel. I personally had trouble getting into this one and felt it was rather slow at times. However, it was highly recommended in the comments on a Good Shit vs. Shit to Avoid post on YA romance. Have you read this one?
Sixteen-year-old Gemma has had an unconventional upbringing in India, until the day she foresees her mother’s death in a black, swirling vision that turns out to be true. Sent back to England, she is enrolled at Spence, a girls’ academy with a mysterious burned-out East Wing. There Gemma is snubbed by powerful Felicity, beautiful Pippa, and even her own dumpy roommate Ann, until she blackmails herself and Ann into the treacherous clique.
Gemma is distressed to find that she has been followed from India by Kartik, a beautiful young man who warns her to fight off the visions. Nevertheless, they continue, and one night she is led by a child-spirit to find a diary that reveals the secrets of a mystical Order.
The clique soon finds a way to accompany Gemma to the other-world realms of her visions “for a bit of fun” and to taste the power they will never have as Victorian wives, but they discover that the delights of the realms are overwhelmed by a menace they cannot control. Gemma is left with the knowledge that her role as the link between worlds leaves her with a mission to seek out the “others” and rebuild the Order. A Great and Terrible Beauty is an impressive first book in what should prove to be a fascinating trilogy.

I think I impulsively bought all of the JR Ward Brotherhood books a year or two back when you guys advertised them as being on sale for like a buck or two apiece. They are… something. I wouldn’t call them super well written, but they are fine as weird popcorn books… easily wolfed down and mostly forgettable. (Could not for the life of me tell you any character names or plot points. I seem to remember lots of “thug” speak?) I felt like they had a lot of great worldbuilding potential in certain concepts, but my thought process reading them is basically summed up as “??????????”
I loved the whole Gemma Doyle trilogy. When I saw the cover, I squealed. This came out around the same time as Twilight and while all my friends seemed to be going ga ga for vampires, I was enthralled with the series. Thanks for sharing this one! 🙂
Libba Bray is kind of a slow burn, but I personally love her work—intensely emotional, a lot of time spent on character development so that we end up really knowing those characters. I like the Great and Terrible Beauty series and I really, *really* love the Diviners series—I think it’s amazing, basically. She takes an age to write, which totally makes sense, but also means I’m on tenterhooks for years!
Fhool me once, shame on you. Fhool me twice, er, shix times, shame on me. The BDB and I have parted ways. Fhorevher.
A Christmas anthology that includes Molly O’Keefe, however, is a one click score.
I only needed to be Fhooled 4 times before I and the BDB parted ways Fhorevher. The series appears endless though. So anyone interested will have a lot of reading material to last a them a while.
Holding Out For a Hero by Codi Gary is $1.99 right now. I haven’t read this particular title, but I’ve read and enjoyed other books by this author.
And same for Juliana Stone’s 3-book omnibus of her Family Simon series. These are free, but I haven’t read them, only other books by this author.
I gave up on BDB at book 10 when the worldbuilding finally fell apart. *will stop here, because Lover Reborn STILL makes him go on a rant* The series had been going downhill for a while, then that book just pissed me off in every was possible.
Actually, it appears as though all three titles in the Cody Gary series are on sale for $1.99 right now. One Lucky Hero and Hero of Mine are the first two titles.
The Christmas anthology is $0.75 @ Kobo right now.
Another former BDB reader……Ward, or should I spell it Whard? lost me when she didn’t have enough respect for the world she created to give it any consistency. I made it through the cultural appropriation, the eye rolling names, and the vanishing heroines, but we all have breaking points.
Craig=Craeg. Paradise. That’s just lazy.
You Had Me at Christmas is wonderful, even the NTM authors.
Hear, hear! Yet another former Ward reader. I gave up after six, I think. And I love how everyone who criticizes Ward’s spelling tendencies does so by appropriating it. Dumbest names ever. Haven’t read her in years and absolutely do not miss her or her atrocious spelling. I was rather surprised the character wasn’t named Paradhise.
I think I went through 7 or 8 of the BDB books before I stopped. It is weird how long it takes before your rational brain catches up and confronts you with the fact that you’re reading a book where the hero is named “Zsadist” and nobody thinks that’s weird on several levels.
