  • Silent in the Grave

Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn

RECOMMENDED: Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn is $1.99! This book and series has been mentioned quite a bit on the site. Elyse recommended it if you like historical mysteries. Reader StacieH4 mentioned it for those who prefer their romance light on sex, and Reader Tina Chaney said on a podcast that the book has one of her favorite opening lines. Have you read it?

“Let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.”

These ominous words, slashed from the pages of a book of Psalms, are the last threat that the darling of London society, Sir Edward Grey, receives from his killer. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, Sir Edward collapses and dies at his London home, in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests.

Prepared to accept that Edward’s death was due to a long-standing physical infirmity, Julia is outraged when Brisbane visits and suggests that Sir Edward has been murdered. It is a reaction she comes to regret when she discovers the damning paper for herself, and realizes the truth.

Determined to bring her husband’s murderer to justice, Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward’s demise. Dismissing his warnings that the investigation will be difficult, if not impossible, Julia presses forward, following a trail of clues that lead her to even more unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.

  • Chasing Lady Amelia

Chasing Lady Amelia by Maya Rodale

Chasing Lady Amelia by Maya Rodale is $1.99! This is the second book in the Keeping Up with the Cavendishes historical romance series. Some readers felt the romance was a bit rushed, while others said the book was sweet, fluffy goodness. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

In the second novel of Maya Rodale’s enchanting Keeping Up with the Cavendishes series, an American heiress finds her reputation—and heart—in danger when she travels to London and meets a wickedly tempting rake

    Terribly Improper

Lady Amelia is fed up with being a proper lady and wishes to explore London, so one night she escapes…and finds herself in the company of one Alistair Finlay-Jones. He’s been ordered by his uncle to wed one of the American girls. How lucky then, that one of them stumbles right into his arms!

    Totally Scandalous

Alistair and Amelia have one perfect day to explore London, from Astley’s Amphitheater to Vauxhall Gardens. Inevitably they end up falling in love and making love. If anyone finds out, she will be ruined, but he will win everything he’s ever wanted.

    Very Romantic

When Amelia finds out Alistair has been ordered to marry her, he must woo her and win back the angry American girl. But with the threat of scandals, plural, looming…will he ever catch up to the woman he loves?

  • The Daredevil Snared

The Daredevil Snared by Stephanie Laurens

The Daredevil Snared by Stephanie Laurens is 99c! This is the third book in the Adventurers Quartet, and all of the heroes in the series are captains. So if you like seafaring romances, this book (and series) might be for you. Many readers loved the heroine, but found the book lacking the amount of excitement they were expecting.

Captain Caleb Frobisher, hedonistic youngest son of a seafaring dynasty, wants to be taken seriously by his family, and understands he has to prove himself sufficiently reformed. When opportunity strikes, he seizes the next leg of the covert mission his brothers have been pursuing and sails to Freetown. His actions are decisive, and he completes the mission’s next stage—but responsibility, once exercised, has taken root, and he remains in the jungle to guard the captives whose rescue is the mission’s ultimate goal.

Katherine Fortescue has fled the life of poverty her wastrel father had bequeathed her and come to Freetown as a governess, only to be kidnapped and put to work overseeing a child workforce at a mine. She and the other captured adults understand that their lives are limited by the life of the mine. Guarded by well-armed and well-trained mercenaries, the captives have been searching for some means of escape, but in vain. Then Katherine meets a handsome man—a captain—in the jungle, and he and his crew bring the sweet promise of rescue.

The sadistic mercenary captain who runs the mine has other ideas, but Caleb’s true strength lies in extracting advantage from adversity, and through the clashes that follow, he matures into the leader of men he was always destined to be. The sort of man Katherine can trust—with her body, with her life. With her love.

The first voyage is one of exploration, the second one of discovery. The third journey brings maturity, while the fourth is a voyage of second chances. Continue the journey and follow the adventure, the mystery, and the romances to the dramatic end.

As someone who also has difficulty relationshipping, I really, really liked this.  There are a lot of well-drawn side characters, and an entertainingly evil bad guy, and (quelle surprise) actual learning.  I wasn’t even 1/4 done before I was emailing Sarah going “WE NEED EVERYONE TO READ THIS” because I was getting super emotional over everybody and everything.  Read the book!  You’ll be happy you did.

Enjoy a quartet of delicious Regency-set romances with Christmas elements…

In one box set, Theresa Romain brings you the complete Holiday Pleasures series. Includes four novels and three bonus stories!

    The Viscount’s Inconvenient Temptation

  1. DonnaMarie says:

Do pick up the Deanna Raybourn, especially if you like those angsty dark men. Brisbane is hmmmmmmm, not delightful, more seductive.

  2. Jenns says:

They’re not on sale, but Judith McNaught novels are now on Kindle!

  3. Karenmc says:

Grab that Holiday Pleasures Bundle – good stuff!

Also, yes the opening line of Silent in the Grave is a classic.

  4. Kim W. says:

Season for Scandal is an interesting one for me, because I completely agree with a lot of what Redheadedgirl wrote in her review about the H/h being bad at relationshipping and needing to learn how to do it…but for me, it made for a really unenjoyable reading experience. I felt kind of heartbroken for Jane for a lot of the book, and their lack of communication or warmth (while still having tons of sex that leaves Jane feeling sad?) just left me with a hollow feeling. It didn’t help that I expected a much lighter and more fun read based on the Amazon summary.

Anyway, just my two cents! It turned me off Romain but I’d love to give her work another try…

  5. No, the Other Anne says:

Silent in the Grave is a must-read, but beware! I then immediately had to read the entire rest of the series. I’d just go ahead and check if the boxed set is on sale too.

  6. cleo says:

@Jenns – Whitney My Love is 2.99 for the month of Nov. I believe it’s the revised version.

  7. Maria B says:

@Kim: I’m with you on Season for Scandal — I wound up reading it after the second book and absolutely struggling to get through. However, the rest of the series is great, as are her later books. I don’t know what happened with Season for Scandal, but I’d consider it an anomaly for Theresa Romain.

  8. Heather S says:

“The Soldier’s Scoundrel” by Cat Sebastian is 99 cents for Kindle! It’s an m/m romance with a class difference – Oliver was an officer and is a gentleman, and Jack grew up in the slums of London and has a somewhat shady business of solving problems for lady clients. I freaking loved this book!

  9. oceanjasper says:

I loved “The Soldier’s Scoundrel” too. It’s romantic and really well written. The author describes nuances of emotion with beautifully precise language. The book is full of understated moments that are quite touching. I’m pretty burned out on historical romance but that was the best historical I’d read in ages.

  10. Kim W. says:

    Thank you, @Maria B! That’s really helpful!
