Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Psychic Heroine & Cop Hero Team Up

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO comes to us from Nikki, who is hoping to locate this romantic suspense:

I want to say that I read this book 7-12 years ago, but the book could have been older. This book is a contemporary romantic suspense type book.

The main plot involves a psychic helping and a cop solve a string of murders by a serial killer. Some specific details include: at the beginning the psychic sees herself arriving to the bank too late…it is closed…she leaves early but gets picked up by a cop (the hero) for speeding or something (making her late). She had apparently called the police providing some clues on a murder and the cop that picks her up (the hero) is looking at her as though she is crazy.

Some other specifics: the hero’s father (who was also a cop) has died prior to the start of the book, the hero has a big-ish family of only his mom (who, if I remember correctly has some psychic abilities too and sees the heroine as the hero’s soulmate) and sisters.

The heroine can link into the killer’s mind and provides clues throughout, but in the end the killer is the hero’s captain…and he also killed the hero’s dad. There is the big reveal at the end with the captain trying to kill the heroine with the hero and heroine prevailing.

I know psychic heroines and law enforcement heroes are pretty popular, but hopefully this one stands out to someone.

  1. Carolanne says:

Some of it sounds like Dream Man by Linda Howard.

  2. Christine says:

@Carolanne- yes the first part definitely sounded lik Dream Man to me too, but the last part about the Mom, the Dad and the captain don’t fit at all.

  3. Katy L says:

I have read this one, but I can’t remember the title or author, either. I do remember a few more plot details, though. As I recall the guy who killed the hero’s was the father’s partner on the local police force, and remained a family friend. The hero was determined never to marry because he saw how hard being a cop’s wife was on his mother. There may also have been something about how he thought he was destined to die by a certain age because of family history. It might have been a category romance, but I can’t swear to that. I hope this helps someone else remember more.

  4. Boanderey says:

I remember this one, but not the name of course! I think it was in an anthology of paranormal romance. I know I reread it within the past few years so I’m going to look through my books.

  5. Inrgrl says:

Could it be Bad Karma by Theresa Weir?

  6. Nikki says:

I don’t believe it is Bad Karma…the heroine wasn’t hired to do anything. She just kept receiving the serial killers thoughts during the murders. The hero was sent by his Captain/Killer to vet out if she had anything to do with the murders (or if she had witnessed him doing the murder).

  7. I definitely read this. Are you sure it’s not Dream Man? Oh wow, I have to think…

  8. Might it have been a novella in an anthology?

  9. Nikki says:

Definitely not Dream Man…I reread that one just to be sure before I submitted…It could have been part of an anthology. Katy L was right on with the book though. The hero feels he is destined to die at a certain age because most/all of the male’s in his family died at a certain age.

  10. SceneStealer says:

    “Tuesday’s Child” by Dale Mayer?

  11. Drewbird says:

I don’t think it is this one, but there are a lot of similarities if you like reading this kind of thing…
    Maggie Shayne’s Forgotten Vows

  12. Anna says:

I thought it was one of Nora Roberts’ Night series, but I don’t think any of those fit… That’s a fun series to re-read, though! 🙂

  13. Nikki says:

I’m reading Tuesday’s child right now…it’s similar but not the one I was thinking of. Forgotten Vows looks good though have to add to my reading list, and the Night series too!

  14. Nancy says:

I know this book!!!! And I have no idea what it’s called. 🙁 Or at the very least I read the book Katy L did.

Was it the mom who thought there was a curse because he’s in a long line of cops who died at age 30/32/35 (suitable age for hero at the time the book was published). His dad, an uncle and grandfather were all cops and died at that particular age… Will take a look at the shelves and hopefully report back.

  15. Nikki says:

    YES Nancy!!!

  16. Nancy says:

So far confirmed not Bad Karma by Teresa Weir… By re-reading the entire book… I also comfirmed not likely another book from Samhain Publishing by skimming or reading other ebooks from that seller. I think I’m going to be a while to help figure this out as I keep reading books to “confirm” they aren’t right!

  17. LisaC says:

Didn’t Christine Feehan have a series a few years back with psychic heroines? Or was it psychic heroes?

  18. Nikki says:

The Christine Feehan ghostwalker series is special ops and psychic heroines (awesome series)….this particular book the hero was a cop without military background.

  19. Meg says:

I read this! It’s part of a series? And was it set in Detroit?

  20. Nikki says:

It was set in a city…but I don’t remember the particulars of the city. I do not remember if it was part of a series.

  21. Gloriamarie says:

For some reason, Julie James comes to mind but I am probably wrong

  22. flchen1 says:

Definitely not anything by Julie James–I’ve read and re-read them all.

  23. denise says:

    Reminds me of Cherry Adair

  24. Nikki H says:

At first I thought it was Dream Man too but the part about the mom didn’t jive. I hope Nancy or Nikki (the first Nikki) figures out which it is. This is my kind of book.

  25. Nancy says:

Nikki I have not given up! But so far haven’t found it. I’ll report back when I have found that darn book (or have exhausted all print and e-books in my library).

  26. Nikki says:

    Thank you Nancy!!!

  27. Saturngrl says:

Gah. I am sure I read this, too, and I rarely read romantic suspense. I think the psychic angle intrigued me? If it is the one I read, it’s not part of an anthology. Sorry to to be helpful!

  28. mel burns says:

I too rarely read romantic suspense, but I’ve read this one! I actually spent some time yesterday looking for the author and failed.
Please….someone must know this book and tell me!

  29. Melissa says:

Could it be something by Kay Hooper? She has a whole series, although I think they are billed more as suspense/mystery than romance, but there are romantic elements and a her and heroine in each book.

  30. Melissa says:

Bishop/Special Crimes Unit Series. Thought of it as soon as I completed my other comment.

  31. Nikki says:

The story line is similar to some in that series…but this book wasn’t part of a series…and it didn’t involve the FBI.

  32. Nancy says:

IIRC it’s contemporary romance, not romantic suspence. And this one is not part of the Bishop series which tend to be a lot darker than this one was…

I don’t have the book in print so I either gave it away in one of the hook purges of 2008/2009/2012 (I am a renovation survivor) OR I read it as an ebook. Nikki, do you read ebooks? Did you ever get ebooks from Ellora Cave (before they went wacko) or Samhain Publishing? Hopefully looking at ebooks will go faster than looking at my physical bookshelves.

  33. Ann says:

Whoops. Or not. But it was definitely one I read around the same time…

  34. I’m sure I read it sometime around mid-2000s and in print. I was still getting most of my romance from the library and wasn’t adept at ebooks yet then (though you would question my adeptness right now because I can’t figure out how to archive things on my nook and the memory’s too full and refusing to download.)

I was also fairly new to reading romance at that point and consuming everything indiscriminately, discovering the authors and sub-genres I liked best. So I still say it might have been a novella in an anthology. Remember those “Bad Boy” ones? Maybe not those specifically, but that group of authors– Kensington I think?

  35. Mimosa Grove, Dinah McCall? Probably not, but I’m sure i read this one at about the same time: http://www.eyeonromance.com/bookinfo.cfm?BookID=6759

Shattered Reflections by Deborah Nicholas? http://www.eyeonromance.com/bookinfo.cfm?BookID=7273

Whisper of Evil by Kay Hooper? http://www.eyeonromance.com/bookinfo.cfm?BookID=5905

As you can see, I found another place that makes lists 😉

So you might want to scan the list: http://www.eyeonromance.com/theme.cfm?genreID=202

  36. Nikki says:

Nancy, I do read ebooks…but this one I picked up at the library (my library doesn’t keep logs of what you checked out). I have been back to the library and looked at every paperback book in the section and could not find it again.

  37. Nikki says:

Philippa L…thank you for list, I will check it out!!!

  38. Nikki H says:

Victoria Laurie’s Psychic Eye books are about a psychic and her boyfriend, an FBI agent. I read the first few several years ago and that’s all I remember about them.

  39. Susan says:

It’s definitely not Mimosa Grove. (That’s one of my favorite Sharon Sala books and a comfort reread for me, so I recommend it even if it isn’t the book in question.)

I keep checking back because I really want this one solved.
