Wicked Intentions

RECOMMENDED: Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt is FREE! Elyse really enjoyed this book and gave it an A-:
Serial killer. And Ghost of St. Giles vigilante. And river pirate. And bondage.
If any or all of those things appeal to you, I’d really recommend this book. If you’re looking for a spicy historical, or one not focused around the glittering aristocracy, Wicked Intentions fits the bill. Aside from a few ball scenes, this book takes place among the working class of London.
A man controlled by his desires…
Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London’s most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows St. Giles like the back of her hand— she’s spent a lifetime caring for its inhabitants at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk.
A woman haunted by her past…
Caire makes a simple offer—in return for Temperance’s help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to London’s high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as cold calculation soon falls prey to a passion that neither can control—one that may well destroy them both.
A bargain neither could refuse.

Playing By Her Rules by Amy Andrews is 99c! This is a sports contemporary romance with a rugby-playing hero and second chance romance. Be warned, the book is a little on the short side, but 99c isn’t a bad price to give it a shot. But many loved the slow burn of the second chance romance between the hero and heroine. Have you read this one?
In this grudge match, the first to score…
When style columnist Matilda Kent accidentally lets slip that she was once involved with the captain of the Sydney Smoke rugby team, she suddenly finds herself elevated to the position she’s always wanted – feature writer. The catch? She’s stuck doing a six-part series on her ex. Still, there’s no way she can turn down a promotion…or the chance to dish the dirt on the guy who so callously broke her heart.
…could win it all!
Tanner Stone wants to be involved in a feature series about as much as he wants to snap an Achilles. But the thought of seeing Tilly again is a bonus—and has him more worked up than he wants to admit. Only he’s not prepared for how different she is – all cool and professional. His Tilly is still in there, though…and he still wants her, now more than ever. All he has to do is charm her into giving him a rematch. And this time, winner takes all!

Hawke by Sawyer Bennett is $1.99! This is a hockey romance with a second chance romance plot. It’s also the fifth book in the Cold Fury Hockey series. The cover model is giving me some major Hugh Jackman vibes, by the way. Readers loved getting to know about the hero and heroine’s past together, but some wished the book was a bit more complex in terms of conflict. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.
The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.
Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.
Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Fair Play by Samantha Wayland is 99c at Amazon! Hopefully, there will be some price-matching later today. This is a workplace hockey romance and I’m not sure, but it seems there may be a hint of an age difference. Some readers expressed difficulty with staying interested, while others really loved the hero. This is the first book in the Hat Trick series.
Savannah Morrison is the new athletic trainer for the Moncton Ice Cats, a professional hockey team in the wilds of New Brunswick. It’s a good thing she’s got plenty of knowledge and grit, because as the only female trainer in the league, she has to work twice as hard to win the players’ respect. The last thing on earth she would do is date one of them.
Twelve year hockey veteran Garrick LeBlanc isn’t ready to hang up his skates, particularly since he hasn’t figured out what the hell he’s planning to do next. He needs the new trainer to keep him fit to play, and she’s got the skills to do it. Too bad he lost his mind and hit on her the day they met. Now she hates his guts and he’s made an art of ignoring her.
When the team is put up for sale, Garrick and Savannah have to work together to save their jobs and their team. Somewhere along the way, they discover Garrick isn’t just a hockey player, Savannah isn’t only passionate about her work, and just maybe they’ve got more in common than they thought.
Contains brief M/M content. Don’t worry, though, there’s plenty more in Book 2. 🙂

The Girl With Ghost Eyes by MH Borson is currently 1.99 on Kindle for Cyber Monday, and if you like films like Spirited Away, BUY THIS BOOK. It took me a bit to get into, but it’s absolutely fascinating, full of great myths and creatures and a wonderful, rich setting. But more importantly, it’s a GREAT story of a woman who is constantly overlooked and undervalued coming to realize her own worth and in turn being valued by the community.
If I wanted to nitpick, I could say that Li-lin is ultimately bound a bit TOO much by what men of all kinds think of her (there is also maybe one or two other named female characters in this book and that’s it, sadly – not kidding), and in a way it’s a man who is ultimately responsible for unlocking her power, which is frustrating given that the book is otherwise so great at pointing out how incredibly capable and wonderful and strong she is despite the short-sightedness of men. It’s written by a guy, and it feels like he was so intent on avoiding certain tropes he might have inadvertently walked right into others. But despite this, it’s still a tremendous amount of fun, has an enormously satisfying hero’s journey, and I stayed up until 2AM to finish it and didn’t want it to end.
If there isn’t a sequel, I will flip every table I can find until the police come for me. You have been warned.
Has anyone here used the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker to successfully make yogurt?
Also, Harlequin has a buy one, get one free site-wide offer today. I need to do a better job of keeping track of the HQ books I want to read…
The one you evil people talked me into buying arrives today. I’ll have to document how it goes.
Several of Jenny Colgan’s earlier books are on sale for 1.99 at amazon.com. They are probably more Chick Lit than romance (the author is British and the books are usually published first in Britain), but I really enjoy them. They are usually priced high — 8.99, 9.99, 10.99, so this is a pretty good deal.
Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin is also 1.99 on Kindle, if you are interested in starting the series.
What Happens Under the Mistletoe, a novella collection by Sabrina Jeffries, Candace Camp, Karen Hawkins, and Meredith Duran (Sweetest Regret that was recently released separately for .99) is $1.99 at Amazon at least.
Highly recommend Wicked Intentions, I haven’t read Fair Play but have enjoyed other books by Wayland (Home and Away is an excellend MM), and I read the second book in that Amy Andrews series a few months back and enjoyed it, so I’m pleased to pick up the first one on sale.
As for Hawke, it’s definitely not my favorite of the Cold Fury books. I found it to be a bit depressing and was angry at the heroine for blaming the hero for things he couldn’t do anything about (because he didn’t know because SHE DIDN’T TELL HIM). It’s kind of depressing, IMO. A better contribution to that series is Zack, or Ryker. This one just didn’t strike the right note for me.
I feel I should mention that the Wayland book is actually part of a series, and the ‘couple’ ends up being a menage relationship (MMF), if that’s a dealbreaker for anyone.
I’ve been dying to give the Maiden Lane books a try and, at that price, how could I not one-click.
And I second the recommendation of The Girl with the Ghost Eyes. I never read paranormals, but something about it caught my attention.
I meant to mention that Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy is also on sale. Again, I never read YA, but this was wonderful. A plus-size heroine who is entirely happy with herself.
I read the second Sydney Smoke book when it was on sale and enjoyed it. I’ve been waiting for number one to go on sale. Woot!
