Slave to Sensation
Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh is $1.99! This is the very first book in the Psy-Changeling series and for many readers, it’s what kicked off their love for Nalini Singh. However, other readers mention that the oomph of the book seemed to wane once the hero and heroine got together. But I personally loved it and the series just gets better and better. Any Psy-Changeling fans out there?
THE FIRST PSY/CHANGELING NOVEL from the New York Times bestselling author of Shards of Hope, Shield of Winter, and Heart of Obsidian…The book that Christine Feehan called “a must-read for all of my fans.”
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation”–the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…
Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion–and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities–or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

The Rose Garden
The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley is $1.99! This book was published in 2011, and has a 4-star average on GoodReads.
The heroine returns to her childhood summer home in Cornwall to scatter her sister’s ashes and finds a portal to the 18th century in the rose garden, and there’s a pretty hot dude back there, too. In time, I mean, and also in the rose garden.
“Whatever time we have,” he said, “it will be time enough.”
Eva Ward returns to the only place she truly belongs, the old house on the Cornish coast, seeking happiness in memories of childhood summers. There she finds mysterious voices and hidden pathways that sweep her not only into the past, but also into the arms of a man who is not of her time.
But Eva must confront her own ghosts, as well as those of long ago. As she begins to question her place in the present, she comes to realize that she too must decide where she really belongs.
From Susanna Kearsley, author of the New York Times bestseller The Winter Sea and a voice acclaimed by fans of Gabaldon, du Maurier, and Niffenegger alike, The Rose Garden is a haunting exploration of love, family, the true meaning of home, and the ties that bind us together.

The Leopard King
The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre is $2.99! This is the first book in her paranormal romance series, Ars Numina. And man, that cover is amazeballs. Readers loved the emotions the hero and heroine experienced, but some wished there was a bit more information about the world and setting. I think I’ll be buying this one though.
Proud. Imperious. Impassioned.
Until three years ago, those words applied to Dominic Asher, the leader of Ash Valley. His family has ruled the feline branch of the Animari for hundreds of years, guiding the pride through perilous times. Unspeakable loss drove him into seclusion, a feral beast nobody can tame. Now he’s wrecked, a leopard king in exile, and he wants nothing more than to die.
Fierce. Loyal. Determined.
Fortunately for Dom, those words still apply to Pru Bristow, his dead mate’s best friend. She’s had her heart broken too, but she never quits. With the conclave approaching, alliances with the Pine Ridge pack and Burnt Amber clans on the verge of collapse, she’s prepared to do whatever it takes to drag their leader back, before his second can start a war.
At best theirs seems like a desperate alliance, but when their mate bond turns hot and fierce, there’s no end to the questions and the doubts. Neither of them expects to fall in love. But sometimes people don’t know what they’re looking for until they find it.

Midnight Crossroad
Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris is $2.99! This is the first book in her Midnight, Texas series, which is urban fantasy with some mystery thrown in. Some readers felt this series lacks the charm of her Sookie Stackhouse series, but many loved that Harris went back to her roots as a mystery writer, though used paranormal elements.
FIRST IN A NEW TRILOGY
From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale – populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it…
Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.
There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).
Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

Midnight, Texas is also being turned into a new tv show on NBC in midseason. Hmm, might be interesting to start reading the series before watching the show.
I’m going to check out the Ann Aguire, too. Sounds like maybe an attempt was made to avoid First Book Infodumping Syndrome? (Fingers crossed.)
I feel very warmly toward telling me exactly what I need to know for THIS story rather than using it to set up the next seventeen in the series.
Midnight Crossroad has that familiar Charlaine Harris feel–nimble plot with a supernatural edge and writing that sucks you in without weighing you down. I found Midnight Crossroad a perfect before-you-go-to-sleep read. I didn’t feel compelled to finish it all in one go, but sometimes that’s okay too.
Susanna Kearsley!!!! The Kobo link didn’t work initially, so I hope SBTB still gets credit for my purchase.
Love Slave to Sensation! One of my favorite escape/comfort reads 🙂

Thanks for the heads-up on Slave to Sensation! The ebooks NEVER seem to go on sale. I adore this series and it’s one of the only ones I regularly re-read.
Damn! I finally caved and bought Slave to Sensation a few months ago. (If I’d got around to reading it, this wouldn’t annoy me so much. I only paid $4.)
The Slave to Sensation cover is SO much better than the original US cover. Wow.
I am a Psy/Changling fan but I probably would not have become one if I’d started with StS. (I read a short story in an anthology and then read a couple of the books out of order from my library before realizing I really needed to read it in order.) It’s not my favorite.
I don’t usually care for fated mates or alpha males. But the worldbuilding and the metaphors (I relate so hard to trying to learn how to feel) really work for me and so far that’s been enough to keep me reading. Her writing gets stronger as the series progresses. Iirc, the first book is stand alone enough that you’re not commiting to read all 15 books if you read this one.
I really enjoyed Ann Aguirre’ s Razorland series. I like her voice and her kick ass heroines so book budget be damned I’m one clicking this one.
I don’t know that it’s a SALE, but Tessa Dare’s first Spindle Cover book, A Night to Surrender, is $1.99 at Amazon. I bring it up because while I enjoyed it, I kind of forgot I had bought book two, A Week to be Wicked, until the other night, and I loved it SO MUCH I want to recommend the series. Perfect for people who love great chemistry, stories with just the right amount of drama but more of a focus on humour and passion, and great characters. The best recommendation I can give it is that I finished Book 2 the other day and immediately bought books 3 and 4. Highly recommended.
I read each Midnight Book as it came out but best was rereading them in order when the series was finished. I have read her previous books and she pulled characters from each of her prior series and brought them together to Midnight. Barry the Bellboy and the Quinn the tiger shapeshifter (and son) from Sookie’s series, Manfred from the Grave series, Dt Smith from Aurora’s books and the antique store owner from Shakespeare. Great fun
@Cleo – Where would you recommend starting with Psy/Changling? I tried the first in the series and couldn’t get into it at all, but I know it’s a fan favorite. I’d love to try again if there’s a better intro to the series.
@SusanH So, I’m not Cleo and I’m really curious what her thoughts are on the starting point. I started the series with book 1 as a fluke – it was at the used bookstore and looked interesting – so I’mnot someone who jumped in. That said…
You might want to try Caressed by Ice, book 3. It’s probably my absolute favorite of the whole series, with a strong heroine and hero. It’s not too far in to the overall series arc to be confusing and doesn’t have a lot of jumps to previous couples. (That does become a thing in later books.)
@SusanH – I recommend starting with her Psy/Changling novellas if book 1 didn’t work for you – they’re all written to be stand alone and they give you a better sense of the world building and her writing style than StS. And then if you want to read more, you can.
I don’t really recommend reading out of order, even though I did it. There’s a bigger story arc going through the books that makes it hard to jump around in. I agree with Heather that book #3 could be a good entry point – I started with #6, which worked for me but I’m not sure I recommend it. Both of them have less insta-love and have changeling heroines, which may work better for you.
I think that this series works best for readers who dig take charge alpha males or at least can tolerate them. I don’t particularly like them but I’m willing to put up with them because I like the storytelling and worldbuilding.
I’ve been a Charlaine Harris fan for a long time and I was so happy to see the Midnight Texas series. I have the first two, waiting for a third to come out in paperback. I think perhaps the Shakespeare/Lily Bard series was my favorite.
@Cleo–I had the book with the older cover. I like the new one ok, but I find it jarring every time I look at it because they’ve made Lucas look like Nathan Fillion’s brother.
@Susan Neace–I probably miss a lot of the cameos since my memory is so poor, but I’ve definitely noticed Harris’s penchant for having characters from one series show up in another. It’s sometimes odd when she mixes the “straight” mysteries with the supernat stories, tho. For instance, having Lily Bard go to Merlotte’s when there was never any mention of vampires or weres in the Shakespeare world. Then again, it’s Harris. She’s terrible with continuity and makes her own rules.
@SusanH @Heather Greye–I tried unsuccessfully for years to get into the Psy-Changeling books, mostly because I started out of order and didn’t get into the world-building. I, personally, did much better when I revisited the books and started at the beginning–and then glommed the rest of the available series. That said, I agree that Caressed by Ice is still my favorite book, and Jud is probably my favorite character, and that most of the story/action is “contained” so it might be a good point to jump in if you’re not keen on STS. (Then again, if you don’t like CBI, there’s pretty much no hope for you and you should give up on the series altogether. LOL.)
OK, I promise I won’t comment on anyone else’s comment.
@Susan H, I’m not Cleo either, but I would say try to get through a couple of the novellas and then go to #3, “Caressed by Ice.” I tried to straight up start with that one, but got pretty muddy on the world building (couldn’t figure out if it was supposed to set in roughly our world or in the future, or what). I think the novellas in “Wild Invitation” would be good ones to give you some context. If you strike out on those, it’s probably just not for you
The Beaneath Series Vol. 1 is .99 cents at amazon right now. It has the first three books in the series in it, normally they’re 4.99 a piece, so it’s a great deal!
Thanks, everyone! I just love this place. I know literally no romance readers in real life, and this community is such a blessing to come to for recommendations and advice.
@SusanH: I’m so very glad you’re here. 🙂
I read Ann Aguirre’s Dred Chronicles last week, and was knocked over. Staying up late, waking up early, reading through meals, the works. I then went out and bought ALL THE ANN AGUIRRE THINGS. Haven’t read any of her paranormals yet, but she has an amazing gift for creating flawed characters that you still cheer for, plus she is able to create a very vivid sense of place. I LOVED the Dred Chronicles and will definitely be reading this one!
