Rebel Cowboy

Rebel Cowboy by Nicole Helm is $1.99! This is a contemporary western with a former athlete turned cowboy hero. Readers loved the interaction between the hero and heroine, but others found the characters a bit unapproachable at the beginning of the book. Rebel Cowboy came out earlier this year and has a 3.6-star rating on Goodreads.

Portland Storm: The First Period by Catherine Gayle is 99c! Admittedly, the title makes me giggle, but 99c is a good deal for three sports contemporary romances and a novella. Trigger warning: At least one of the heroines has rape as part of her backstory.
A boxed set of three novels and a novella in the Portland Storm hockey romance series by USA Today bestselling author Catherine Gayle.
BREAKAWAY
Portland Storm captain Eric “Zee” Zellinger knows how to get the job done, but leading his once elite team to victory is fast becoming a losing battle. He can’t lose focus now—not with his career on the line. But when his best friend’s little sister makes him an offer he can’t refuse, Eric could lose the drive the team relies on from their captain.
Still in a downward spiral after a life-altering event in college, Dana Campbell is desperate to try anything to break away from the horror of that fateful night—even enlisting the help of the only man she trusts completely.
No matter how irresistible she is or how tempting the offer, Eric might not be able to cross that line—especially with the team’s chance at the playoffs on the line. Now, Eric has to take one last shot, but will he choose Dana’s Breakaway chance at happiness or the move that could secure his career?
ON THE FLY
Being sidelined for far too long due to injuries, Portland Storm player Brenden “Soupy” Campbell is ready to take his career to the next level and make his new position on the team stick. After he meets the general manager’s cute new assistant, Brenden knows he’s right where he’s supposed to be.
Determined to change things up On the Fly and establish a future for herself and her children, Rachel Shaw jumps at the opportunity to work for the Storm. She’s not going to let anything—or anyone—get in her way, especially not a sexy and overly cocky hockey star.
But when Brenden pulls out all the stops and turns on the charm, Rachel refuses to make the same mistake twice. Now, it’s up to Brenden to cement his spot—both on the team and in Rachel’s heart.
TAKING A SHOT
Rising hockey star Jamie Babcock is ready to take the most important shot of his life—and this time, it’s not on the ice. Dating his teammate’s daughter might be riskier than going head to head with one of the Portland Storm’s rivals. But time is running out—it’s now or never.
High school senior Katie Weber knows all too well the woes of adolescence, but throw in a leukemia diagnosis, and her life just got a lot more complicated. With prom looming and a shiny bald head to contend with, Katie might sit at home on the most important night of her potentially very short life. Unless Jamie Babcock, her ultimate crush, finally makes the move she’s been praying for. But that’s not the only miracle she needs.
Now Jamie must show Katie just how important she is and how hard she must fight.
Before it’s too late…
LIGHT THE LAMP
Hockey star Liam Kallen lost his scoring touch when his wife died. Still broken up over her loss, Liam’s darkness overpowers him, but his new team—the Portland Storm—needs him. A chance meeting brings him face to face with Noelle Payne, the most positive and upbeat woman he’s ever met, and his darkness begins to fade.
There’s never been a challenge that Noelle can’t conquer. Brightside optimist to a fault, Noelle refuses to succumb to the luxurious life Liam can give her, as she longs to find deeper meaning and purpose in her life. Now it’s up to Liam to open up and show her that she’s the light he’s needed all along—giving her the greatest purpose of all. He might have saved her, but can Noelle be the light that saves him?

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray is $1.99! This is a YA time travel novel and I was really excited about this title back in November 2014 when we featured it on Hide Your Wallet. However, other readers (including my roommate) mention that the plot and action gets lost in favor of a love triangle. It’s the first book in the Firebird series.
Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for their radical scientific achievements. Their most astonishing invention: the Firebird, which allows users to jump into parallel universes, some vastly altered from our own. But when Marguerite’s father is murdered, the killer—her parent’s handsome and enigmatic assistant Paul—escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.
Marguerite can’t let the man who destroyed her family go free, and she races after Paul through different universes, where their lives entangle in increasingly familiar ways. With each encounter she begins to question Paul’s guilt—and her own heart. Soon she discovers the truth behind her father’s death is more sinister than she ever could have imagined.
A Thousand Pieces of You explores a reality where we witness the countless other lives we might lead in an amazingly intricate multiverse, and ask whether, amid infinite possibilities, one love can endure.

A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha Mabry is $1.99! Sarah was excited about the setting of Puerto Rico, as well as the presence of myths and folklore. However, many readers found the hero to be boring and didn’t exactly enjoy his POV. They wanted more of the cool, potentially poisonous girl. Have you read this one?
In this stunning debut, legends collide with reality when a boy is swept into the magical, dangerous world of a girl filled with poison.
Everyone knows the legends about the cursed girl–Isabel, the one the senoras whisper about. They say she has green skin and grass for hair, and she feeds on the poisonous plants that fill her family’s Caribbean island garden. Some say she can grant wishes; some say her touch can kill.
Seventeen-year-old Lucas lives on the mainland most of the year but spends summers with his hotel-developer father in Puerto Rico. He’s grown up hearing stories about the cursed girl, and he wants to believe in Isabel and her magic. When letters from Isabel begin mysteriously appearing in his room the same day his new girlfriend disappears, Lucas turns to Isabel for answers–and finds himself lured into her strange and enchanted world. But time is running out for the girl filled with poison, and the more entangled Lucas becomes with Isabel, the less certain he is of escaping with his own life.
A Fierce and Subtle Poison beautifully blends magical realism with a page-turning mystery and a dark, starcrossed romance–all delivered in lush, urgent prose.

Yeah, in my scrolling through the post, I initially read the box set title as “Period Storm.” O.O
I’ve been curious about the Portland Storm series for a while, as I’m an Oregonian and enjoy reading stories set in my state (though I’ll admit to being extra critical as so many people get it completely wrong). I’ve been burned by misogynist bullshit in a lot of sports romances lately so I’ve been holding off, but damn, $.99 is a steal for four books, so I’ll bite.
One of the Amazon reviewers mentions the main alternate universe in the “Thousand Pieces” book is imperial Russia…that alone might sell me!
So…A Fierce & Subtle Poison is an update of Hawthorne’s story “Rappaccini’s Daughter”?
I really like the Portland Storm books, especially the first one. Light the Lamp (I think it’s the third or fourth in that set) features a heroine who is the definition of TSTL and I can’t even finish it, even though I’ve read the other books several times. There are two trigger warnings: the heroine in the first book was raped in college at a hockey game (she was a player), and there was abuse to one or both of the children of the heroine in the second book by their father (who is now in jail for it).
No better way to celebrate the start of hockey season than new hockey romance. Click!!
@Cristiane: Exactly my first thought! It’s one of my favorite stories from that period of American literature, actually. I might want to read it just for that.
Dance with Me by Heidi Cullinan is .99 at Amazon and ARe (and probably other vendors) – it’s a re-issue of one of her older m/m contemporaries. The new sequel just came out this week. I enjoyed it – it’s a rivals to lovers romance between a classically trained dancer and former football player.
Also, Riptide Publishing is having a 1/2 price sale on their website and ARe – and it looks like quite a few are more than 1/2 off at .99. Which is a good sale since Riptide (like many m/m / LGBTQ publishers) tends to be pricey.
