    Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins

RECOMMENDED: Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins is $1.99! Redheadedgirl gave this book an A and reminded us all how lucky we are to have an author like Jenkins:

What Jenkins has been doing for decades upon decades is giving her readers strong three-dimensional Black women who are loved, desired, and cherished. I can’t tell you how important that is. Eddy gets to be strong, but also loved and supported by her community and her man, and that is the thing I loved most about her.  I’m so glad Jenkins is writing these stories and giving voice to these times and places and people. We’re really lucky to have her in our community.

USA Today bestselling author Beverly Jenkins returns with the first book in a breathtaking new series set in the Old West

Rhine Fontaine is building the successful life he’s always dreamed of—one that depends upon him passing for White. But for the first time in years, he wishes he could step out from behind the façade. The reason: Eddy Carmichael, the young woman he rescued in the desert. Outspoken, defiant, and beautiful, Eddy tempts Rhine in ways that could cost him everything . . . and the price seems worth paying.

Eddy owes her life to Rhine, but she won’t risk her heart for him. As soon as she’s saved enough money from her cooking, she’ll leave this Nevada town and move to California. No matter how handsome he is, no matter how fiery the heat between them, Rhine will never be hers. Giving in for just one night might quench this longing. Or it might ignite an affair as reckless and irresistible as it is forbidden . . .

  • The Lady and the Captain

The Lady and the Captain by Beverly Adam

The Lady and the Captain by Beverly Adam is 99c at Amazon! However, the other vendors have sale prices at $2.99 and $3.99. This is a historical romance with a fake relationship and forced proximity at sea. Unfortunately, it only has two reviews on Goodreads, so I can’t give you many details on the plot or what readers liked. Also, I love the color scheme on that cover! It’s the second book in the Gentleman of Honor series and the first book is currently free!

Sarah Duncan had the kind of beauty suited for the ballrooms of London, not the back alleys of Ireland. But she was a healer, not a debutante. Her life was devoted to helping others, not dressing up and attending fancy balls.

And then one stormy night she met him. He was a young, English naval officer, who arrived on her doorstep with his deathly ill friend. Her life would be forever changed.

Lieutenant Robert Smythe, acting Captain of The Brunswick, was determined to find the killer who’d poisoned his commander and friend. With Sarah’s knowledge of plants and herbs, he would investigate this devious crime. Posing as his fiancée, she would be off limits to a crew of randy men at sea.

Sarah’s beauty was captivating, but her strength and courage drew him like a talisman. He was determined to catch the killer and keep her safe. Indeed, he would protect her with his very life.

  • Wicked Little Secrets

Wicked Little Secrets by Susanna Ives

Wicked Little Secrets by Susanna Ives is $2.51/$2.99! This is the first book in the Wicked Little Secrets series and the rest of them are also on sale. This is a friends to lovers romance, though the heroine is already engaged to another. Some found the book to be over the top and a bit long, while others thought the OTT-ness was hilarious. Have you read this one?

    It’s Not Easy Being Good…

Vivacious Vivienne Taylor has finally won her family’s approval by getting engaged to the wealthy and upright John Vandergrift. But when threatened by a vicious blackmail scheme, it is to her childhood friend that Vivienne turns; the deliciously wicked Viscount Dashiell.

When Being Wicked is so Much More Exciting…

Lord Dashiell promised himself long ago that his friendship with Vivienne would be the one relationship with a woman that he wouldn’t ruin. He agrees to help her just to keep the little hothead safe, but soon finds that Vivienne has grown up to be very, very dangerous to all of Dash’s best intentions.

  • A Certain Age

A Certain Age by Williams Beatriz

A Certain Age by Beatriz Williams is $1.99! This is a historical fiction novel set in New York’s Jazz Age. This book was released earlier this summer and readers loved the sense of place Williams created. It’s also a retelling of an opera, which is pretty cool! However, others found the story a bit underwhelming compared to the jacket copy. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

The bestselling author of A Hundred Summers brings the Roaring Twenties brilliantly to life in this enchanting and compulsively readable tale of intrigue, romance, and scandal in New York Society, brimming with lush atmosphere, striking characters, and irresistible charm.

As the freedom of the Jazz Age transforms New York City, the iridescent Mrs. Theresa Marshall of Fifth Avenue and Southampton, Long Island, has done the unthinkable: she’s fallen in love with her young paramour, Captain Octavian Rofrano, a handsome aviator and hero of the Great War. An intense and deeply honorable man, Octavian is devoted to the beautiful socialite of a certain age and wants to marry her. While times are changing and she does adore the Boy, divorce for a woman of Theresa’s wealth and social standing is out of the question, and there is no need; she has an understanding with Sylvo, her generous and well-respected philanderer husband.

But their relationship subtly shifts when her bachelor brother, Ox, decides to tie the knot with the sweet younger daughter of a newly wealthy inventor. Engaging a longstanding family tradition, Theresa enlists the Boy to act as her brother’s cavalier, presenting the family’s diamond rose ring to Ox’s intended, Miss Sophie Fortescue—and to check into the background of the little-known Fortescue family. When Octavian meets Sophie, he falls under the spell of the pretty ingénue, even as he uncovers a shocking family secret. As the love triangle of Theresa, Octavian, and Sophie progresses, it transforms into a saga of divided loyalties, dangerous revelations, and surprising twists that will lead to a shocking transgression . . . and eventually force Theresa to make a bittersweet choice.

Full of the glamour, wit and delicious twists that are the hallmarks of Beatriz Williams’ fiction and alternating between Sophie’s spirited voice and Theresa’s vibrant timbre, A Certain Age is a beguiling reinterpretation of Richard Strauss’s comic opera Der Rosenkavalier, set against the sweeping decadence of Gatsby’s New York.

  1. Hazel says:

What an intriguing premise- the hero is passing for White. So there’s more to him than the pecs on the cover. Thank you, I want to take a look at that.

By the way, Amazon UK has >23,000 results for ‘Forbidden’! 🙂

  2. Crystal says:

You really should. Forbidden is excellent. Jenkins does her homework too. She comes at it from the perspective of, yes, she writes historical fiction, but she will make sure that the history stands up. I’ve read two of her books (this one and Indigo) and she puts an extensive bibliography back there just in case you get the inclination to check her work. I have nothing but respect for that.

  3. CelineB says:

Octavia Butler’s Seed to Harvest, which is all four books of the Patternist series, is a Kindle Daily Deal for $1.99.

  4. CelineB says:

Also Slave to Sensation the first Psy/Changeling book by Nalini Singh is $1.99 on Amazon at least. I picked it up since I only have it on audio.

  5. Kay Sisk says:

Thanks to your review of ‘Forbidden’ earlier this year, my romance book club read it. Thumbs up all the way and it gave us much food for thought and discussion.

  6. Lora says:

OMG TAKE MY MONEY, Of A Certain Age!!! All the jazz age glamour catnip plus an older woman/younger man….woohooooo

  7. cleo says:

I just finished Seed to Harvest! Bought it in an earlier sale. The series is very good, but intense and sometimes disturbing. The box set I bought was arranged in chronological order and I wish I’d ignored that and read them in the order they were published.

  8. Hazel says:

Well, I was able to download a sample. I have to say the style doesn’t impress, but it’s a real plus if the history stands up to scrutiny. Perhaps I’ll give it a try. Thanks to Kay as well, for the encouragement.

Octavia Butler; a writer of stature.

  9. Hazel says:

Meant to reply to Chrystal. The Sample was of Forbidden. Sorry, I don’t see how to edit.

  10. Tam says:

It never fails to annoy me that whenever I read a list of Old School Sci Fi Authors You Must Read, Butler’s never on the list. Asimov, Heinlein, Dick etc – no Butler.

(Bujold never makes any of those top 50 lists either, even though she’s won the Hugo as many times as Heinlein.)
