The Cold Between

RECOMMENDED: The Cold Between by Elizabeth Bonesteel is $1.99! This is a scifi mystery with romantic elements and Elyse celebrated her enjoyment of the book by posting lots of Galaxy Quest gifs. She gave the book a B+:
By the end of the book I was attached enough to the various supporting characters that make up the Galileo’s crew that I’m hoping if Bonesteel continues this series, she keeps them all in place.
If you want something a little different or enjoy lighter Sci-Fi with a suspense edge, then I’d recommend The Cold Between. If you need a guaranteed HEA with your romance, then you might want to tread cautiously.
Deep in the stars, a young officer and her lover are plunged into a murder mystery and a deadly conspiracy in this first entry in a stellar military science-fiction series in the tradition of Lois McMaster Bujold.
When her crewmate, Danny, is murdered on the colony of Volhynia, Central Corps chief engineer, Commander Elena Shaw, is shocked to learn the main suspect is her lover, Treiko Zajec. She knows Trey is innocent—he was with her when Danny was killed. So who is the real killer and why are the cops framing an innocent man?
Retracing Danny’s last hours, they discover that his death may be tied to a mystery from the past: the explosion of a Central Corps starship at a wormhole near Volhynia. For twenty-five years, the Central Gov has been lying about the tragedy, even willing to go to war with the outlaw PSI to protect their secrets.
With the authorities closing in, Elena and Trey head to the wormhole, certain they’ll find answers on the other side. But the truth that awaits them is far more terrifying than they ever imagined . . . a conspiracy deep within Central Gov that threatens all of human civilization throughout the inhabited reaches of the galaxy—and beyond.

RECOMMENDED: Playing with Fire by Kate Meader is $1.99! This is the second book in the Hot in Chicago series. I loved the firefighting heroine in this book and gave it a B- in a Lightning Review:
I really loved the characters and how Meader reversed the typical hero/heroine roles, but I just wished the rest of the book had the same fire (heh) as the first hundred pages.
From popular romance author Kate Meader comes the second novel in Hot in Chicago, a brand-new, sizzling series that follows a group of firefighting foster siblings and their blazing hot love interests!
As the only female firefighter at Engine Co. 6, Alexandra Dempsey gets it from all sides: the male coworkers who think she can’t do the job, the wives and girlfriends who see her as a threat to their firefighter men, and her overprotective foster brothers who want to shelter their baby sister at all costs. So when she single-handedly saves the life of Eli Cooper, Chicago’s devastatingly handsome mayor, she assumes the respect she’s longed for will finally come her way. But it seems Mr. Mayor has other ideas…
Eli Cooper’s mayoral ratings are plummeting, his chances at reelection dead in the water. When a sexy, curvaceous firefighter gives him the kiss of life, she does more than bring him back to the land of the living—she also breathes vitality into his campaign. Riding the wave of their feel-good story might prop up Eli’s flagging political fortunes, but the sizzling attraction between them can go nowhere; he’s her boss, and there are rules that must be obeyed. But you know what they say about rules: they’re made to be broken…

Wolf with Benefits by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! Sarah mentioned this re-release as one of her pick’s for last July’s Hide Your Wallet post. Some readers couldn’t seem to get on board with the heroine, but many love Laurenston’s writing. This is the eighth book in her Pride series and has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads.
There’s nothing like a good-ol’-boy wolf. And ace security expert Ricky Lee Reed serves, protects and seduces with all the right moves…
Sure, Toni Jean-Louis Parker has to be the responsible oldest sister to a crazy-brilliant clan of jackal siblings. Getting serious about anyone isn’t in Ricky Lee Reed’s plans. Hell, even now he doesn’t really have a plan—outside of catching whoever is threatening this dangerously brilliant family. But the more he sees of Toni, the more he’s howling for her. And whatever it takes to convince her that what they have is everything, well, this wily wolf is down for the sizzling chase…

I enjoyed Wolf with Benefits. I liked how Toni’s siblings were individual characters and not plot moppets.
Another yea vote for Wolf With Benefits! A lot of the books were on sale a few weeks ago, her ebooks are usually pretty expensive (the last book in the series is still $10, last I looked!) but most were around a reasonable $4.
Amazon is now pricematching (FREE!) Educating Elizabeth.
